Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Aspen Deanna Henrietta Donovan

Birthday: April 1, 1940

Hometown: Torquay, Devonshire

Bloodline: Muggleborn
Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): First, Second

Biography:
Once upon a time a beautiful young schoolteacher from Guernsey Island fell in love with a brave young sea captain.  After a whirlwind romance (involving a good deal of dancing and more drink than is healthy) the two were wed.  It wasn't long afterwards that they were expecting a child.
It was then that cruel fate intervened and the Germans invaded Guernsey- and the children were evacuated to England.  Naturally, the brave young sea captain volunteered his ocean-worthy vessel to make the trip and the beautiful young schoolteacher took charge of the process from island-side, until she became so heavy with-child that she could no longer do the job.  It was then that she, too was brought from the tiny island to Torquay in England.
Safely ashore, the beautiful young schoolteacher begged her husband not to make any more trips- he had done his duty.  But the brave young sea captain felt honorbound to make one last trip.  He never returned.

Or so the story goes.  Aspen Donovan grew up the only (natural) child of Risa Donovan, headmistress of the Devonshire Home for Displaced Youth- an orphanage set up to house war-orphaned children (but now houses orphans in general).  She was raised much as the orphans, but set apart from them as well- an eternal chip on her shoulder that she was somehow 'better' because she had a parent to love her.

Her Hogwarts letter surprised everyone involved- and invoked anger in her mother!  It was then revealed that her Grandmother Niles had in fact been a squib and had moved to the tiny island of Guernsey in exile.  Risa was raised with a vehement hatred of magical folk and all-things magical, engrained in her by her squib mother.  She saw Asp's acceptance letter as a betrayal; her daughter was abandoning her the same way her husband had.

Magic, as it turns out, had worn its way full-circle- and Asp may yet bring new glory to the old house of Niles!

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
House Request: Slytherin, Ravenclaw

Personality: Asp is not rich, not spoiled- but has many of the trappings of those traits.  She carries a chip on her shoulder of innate superiority: her father wasn't just a sailor, he was a 'handsome young sea captain'; her mother wasn't just a headmistress, she was noble and pure and selfless; she wasn't just a girl, she was a princess in her own mind.  She is in complete denial that her mother seems to have turned on her.

Asp finds the most comfort among the orphans- she can lord over them as their superior.  She enjoys a good book: especially nonfiction books about gardening or history; and fantasies with beautiful but tragic damsels and the strong heroes that save them.  She fully expects the male population to treat her like a princess.

Appearance: Asp is tall for her age- brunette with pale skin, quite thin, and she carries herself with an almost regal countenance.  She smiles quite a bit- even when angered- so it becomes difficult to tell when she is genuinely kidding around or she has become as deadly serious as a snakebite.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
It had rained that morning, so she guessed the garden flowers might have recovered some.  It hadn't been a good season, it seemed- the daffodils had been caught in a late frost and were sickly- at best.  The poppies were about to bloom, she suspected.  So it was with glee that she skipped down the long corridor and out the gate to the Garden.

She was humming a daft little tune, too loud in her head to be held in reserve- she was practically belting it out when she arrived.  But she stopped cold upon first glance at the flower beds- some dastard thing had gone and trampled the daisies!  And there- just inside that, a whole bed of poppies, dashed into chaos!

She stomped her foot as her eyes darted about, looking for the culprit- and was quick to find him smearing schmutz across his cheek and upper lip.  It was an upper-year, and one who apparently had no respect for beauty!

"Can I help you with something?  It is not polite to stare."

Despite being older than she, and thus holding more authority, she held her ground, "'Not polite to stare' says the boy who's been, what?  Letting Limax slugs crawl out your nostrils?"  She pointed behind her to the crushed poppies behind her, "You can start by fixing these, or I swear the gossip rag will be calling you 'Slug Boy' from now on!"
