Once upon a time, there was a very lonely girl. Strange in ways that frightened and disturbed her family and peers, she was always and forever something other to them. Affluent and well placed in the muggle world, this daughter of the grand Whitman Family of Savannah, Georgia was something of a nuisance. Staring into nothing, responding in strange sentiments, sowing discord wherever she went with a well placed word, the Whitman parents wondered if they shouldn’t have named her Eris.

When the letter arrived that told them who she was, the first instinct was to consider how to spin this news in a way that could only offer their family prestige. Politicians to the core, the Whitmans couldn’t take a scandal such as this. Luckily, they needn’t have worried.

The professors of Poesy’s first school were masterful. Such a high-profile, old southern money family couldn’t be seen to have a witch in the family. That was bad for business. Nomags couldn’t know this kind of thing, and in short order, Poesy was effectively erased from the public records. Shipping her off to a wizarding boarding school was more than a help for the Whitman Political Machine.

Poesy didn’t seem to mind. Or, perhaps it should be said that Poesy’s disposition couldn’t have changed. She was who she was. Moody, a little strange, and utterly bitter when the situation called for it.

Sometimes, a Nomag would remember her. Would say something. Would sow the strife that brought a smile to Poesy’s face, twisted and full of dark menace. It was only what the Whitman parents deserved for shunting her off, but it encouraged even more distance.

When Poesy was informed that her removal from her prestigious and favored academy was imminent, she cursed her parents for their heartlessness. Though she only had two friends where she went to school, disdaining the company of the stupid, the talentless, and the simpering fools, she would miss them dearly.

As she eyed the required books of her new school, a strange place called “Hogwarts,” of all things, she disdained it more and more. The books were nothing. The classes were nothing. The whole practice was nothing. She didn’t care about her family’s political climbing, it was never a path for her, she only cared about being as she was. Holed up with her two, beautiful friends, reading books, singing songs, being free as best they could.

Part of her wanted to make her parents pay for this, but the bigger part of her knew that in a few weeks she wouldn’t really be bother to care.

Poe was eyeing the boy as he trudged through the flowers, crushing them beneath his feet and with his hands as he searched and searched, a crooked smile wide on her face. It was amusing, though terribly rude of him to be so cavalier with the lives of innocent plants, but she needed to see what he did. A lumbering fool without much between his ears, it seemed. He didn’t take even a moment to think.

Grinning at his his demand, Poe smiled wider, wicked and knowing. “I think not,” she replied. “I would offer to help you, but I’m not entirely sure I’m interested.” From her spot in the grass, she lifted her hands from where they rested in her lap. “Do we want to help the stinky old boy, little baby?” she asked the rat sniffing in her palms.

Looking back up at the boy, Poesy watched and waited for his reaction. Her bet was indignation. He certainly seemed the type. It wasn’t her fault he hadn’t been attentive. Not her fault he couldn’t be bothered to use his eyes, his brain (if he had one), or anything else at his limited disposal. “Isn’t he just the cutest little baby you ever saw?” Poe added, eyelashes fluttering.

If he had been at all intelligent, perhaps she wouldn’t torture him so. Alas.
