Application for Hogwarts School

 → CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Anastasia Louise Oppenheimer a.k.a Anya

 Birthday: 3 May 1937  (age 12)

 Hometown: Berlin, Germany

 Bloodline: Unknown/Muggleborn???

 Magical Strength (pick one): Divination

 Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring/Summoning

Year (pick two): Second year, First year (If placed in 2nd year, I request a level of 0 in C/S as part of an eventual plot line for Anya.)

Biography: Anya has just come out of one of the most horrible experiences of her life.  As a Jewish girl in Germany during the war, she was constantly moving and hiding and lying to stay alive.  Luckily she was never found out and none of the Nazis ever saw her perform acts of magic or they would have surely killed her.

Her father, however, had been caught in 1943 and, assumedly, sent to Auschwitz.  Her mother was hysterical, they never knew what had become of him, whether or not he perished or survived.  They assumed him dead after several years had passed and now all Anya had was her mother and little sister, Emelyn.  Emelyn was a toddler when all this had happened, she didn't remember any of it, least of all, their father.

After the war was over, they fled to the English countryside, in a remote house, somewhat far from town for safety.  Understandably so, they still feared persecution, even in their new country.  They had little money, their mother wound up having to take a job in town by walking a few kilometers there and back every day.  The children went with her to attend primary school.  They didn't have a car and they lived very private lives.  As Hanukkah came every year, gifts were meager or homemade.  But they each got one new, store bought gift, saved for the last night of celebrations, in which they ate a small braised brisket, potato latkes and homemade doughnuts.  It would be the finest they would eat all year.

At the age of eleven, someone knocked on their door.  It was 1947, only a few years after the war and nobody ever came to visit them.  The girls hid while their mother opened the door about two millimeters.  After talking back and forth through the nearly closed door for a few moments, the door opened widely and their mother told them it was all clear.

A long conversation ensued and included Anya nearly fainting when she learned the weird stuff she could do was magic.  Perhaps, even, it had helped them hide so well from the Nazis.  She was handed a letter made of yellow parchment, with a red wax seal and she opened it cautiously.  She still wasn't sure what was going on.  Was it a joke?

Reading the letter, she discovered she'd been accepted at a boarding school called Hogwarts.  Her mother interjected and said they couldn't afford it but better yet, the tuition was free.  The school could even provide them some money to get her school things.  It was incredible.  Before leaving, the witch from the school handed Anya a heavy little bag containing foreign coins.  Many gold ones, a few silver and bronze ones too.  The witch explained quickly how the money worked and what each coin was called.

And then, like that, she left.  She had explained how to get to Diagon Alley, of course, and how to get to the train.  But young Anya had reservations about going and leaving her sister vulnerable.  Her little sis was only seven years old.  She couldn't translate for her mother all the time, she couldn't go to school by herself and be taunted by the kids.  But it was her little sister that told her to go.  It would be the adventure of a lifetime.

 So, she went.

And her first year was the time of her life.  She found she was quite astute at divinations with a knack for charms and transfiguration too but was quite trollish at conjuring and summoning.  In fact, just about all of her assignments came back with giant red Ts on them, meaning 'troll' in the grading system.

But still, she had great fun, and even if she was a troll in conjuring and summoning, she enjoyed learning, even if she was middle of the class, talent and grade wise overall.  She wasn't the worst and she wasn't the best.  She just was.  Sometimes she wondered if she'd be better in classes if she understood more English but that wasn't exactly something she could change at this time.  German was her native language, it was spoken at home, never English, so coming back from summer holiday was likely to have a shocking effect on her language comprehension.

Anya is really just a good girl at heart who has been through some horrifically tragic things.  Watching her father removed from their hiding spot and loaded into a cramped train car like a wild animal, bound for a concentration camp and then never seeing him again after that was bad.  All the death and separation that went on in Nazi occupied Germany was bad.  People were shot in front of her.  She'd even had a gun held to her head several times.  This is why she is quiet and shy.  She's lost her ability to trust strangers.

Hopefully as time goes on, she can learn to trust and come out of her shell.  And really, Hogwarts has a way of doing that to people.

House Request: Leaving it up to you guys!

Personality: An extremely shy girl of twelve, she spends most of her time writing and reading.  She is not super smart though, just kind of average, though she does have a hunger and thirst for knowledge, even if she isn't apt at many things.  She does have a knack for divination.  Once in a great while, she will be able to make incredibly minor predictions that come true with great accuracy.  She hopes Hogwarts can help her hone this ability in Divination, though she isn't sure what it's called yet as her family is of unknown wizarding blood, so thus, she has not really been exposed to magic.

She is sometimes sad at losing her father, so she may often walk about, lost in her thoughts, bumping into people and walls and the like.  She thinks about the life of hiding she had the endure as a small child and sometimes it makes her angry or upset.  She is not a violent person by any means but sometimes she loses control of her magic and something will crash or explode nearby.  This always shocks and frightens her because she isn't always sure she did it but then again, maybe she did.

Anya has very little happiness in her life right now.  Getting letters from her mother makes her happy and getting letters from her younger sister makes her happier.  She loves to hear about home.  Well, their new home.  After the war was over and the Jews liberated and their father still hadn't come home, the family of three fled to England for safety and a new life.  Learning the language was hard at first but then it got easier.  Emelyn is much more fluent than Anya is and their mother usually has to have one of them translate.

Because of the language barrier, she often misinterprets things and nuances which make for very awkward conversations and interactions.  Sometimes these are funny conversations and sometimes not.

Anya is not a vain girl as she had to live for her whole childhood, until the age of eight, by taking clothes or other things as they were and not be rude or ungrateful about it.  It was about survival, not vanity.  Now that she is a pre-teen who can sometimes get clothes from a secondhand shop, she likes to mix and match outfits, even if they are a bit out there.  She has her own style and she isn't ashamed to express it.  She went so long not being able to properly express herself so she feels no shame.

Appearance: Dark long brownish black hair.  She has heterochromia, which means her eyes are different colors.  It isn't horribly noticeable unless you get close to her.  Her right eye is green and her left eye is hazel, which is why is isn't so noticeable from far away.  She has a heart shaped face with high cheekbones and plump lips.  She is petite and slim with no other extraordinary markings.  Her style of dress is typical of muggles her age at the time though she has a thing for long floor sweeping skirts which is not really in tune with the day's style.  However, it is one reason she enjoys wearing the school robes, because hers purposefully sweep the floor as she bought them long on purpose.

 Responding to RP #1.

The dungeons were definitely creepy.  Especially since they seemed to take special care in making sure they were lit dimly rather than brightly.  Why?  Anya continued walking, her footsteps quiet and stealthy as she was a light girl, petite and often mistaken for a first year despite her second year status.  She knew she was small but so what?  Why did that mean she was automatically a first year?  Whatever, they could all just take their pudding and shove it, for all she cared.  She was tired of being picked on for her size.

You'd think her bag would make some noise though, it thudded heavily along behind her, making a dull thump, thump, thump.  But she didn't think it mattered because nobody else could possibly be down here right now.  Until she heard a very nervous and uncertain voice.  And it was asking if Emma Birch was there.  Anya couldn't make out the outline of the girl asking, but she decided to have some fun.

"It is I, Emma, why do you seek me from my haunting place?"  She said, her German accent incredibly thick.  It would never work.  Emma Birch didn't sound like a German name and she doubted very much that the girl would believe she was talking to the ghost.  But she hoped to frighten her off enough to walk the rest of the way to her dorm  in peace.
