CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Laurel Douglass

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Calla Douglass and that lot

Character age: 22 19/10/44

Character education: Hogwarts - Hufflepuff 1-3. Homeschooled by her mother (a former Hogwarts professor and Head of Hufflepuff) during her 4th and 5th years. Returned to Hogwarts for her final two years.

Strength and weaknesses (details please): Loving; outgoing; selfless; patient; compassionate; dedicated; fierce. Some of these strengths are also her weaknesses. She can be so loving that she can be easily manipulated at times. Her outgoing personality can be overwhelming for some and she doesn’t always realize that before annoying or angering some people. Sometimes she can be so selfless that she forgets about herself and the fact that she can’t help others if her own physical or mental health isn’t also taken care of.

Physical description: Dark chocolate hair with eyes a slightly darker brown. Long hair that is usually worn down with natural waves. A little above average height of 5’ 10”. Generally healthy figure (she loves food but sometimes forgets to eat). Almost always wearing a smile.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.): At almost twenty-three, Laurel still has a sense of innocence about her. No matter what life has thrown at her (and granted she hasn’t had too many terrible experiences) she has always maintained a sense of seeing the good in everything around her. Some might view her as foolish in the way she looks at the world because she has no hesitance in jumping to help anyone that needs it, no matter the consequences she might suffer. As simple as her thoughts might appear, Laurel has always worked hard. She isn’t afraid to admit when something might be beyond her comprehension and is always willing to do what she needs to when she wants to learn something she’s passionate about. Her passions are prone to change quite often because her perspective is that life and the world are an adventure that should be chased to wherever her heart tells her.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: What could be better than teaching the future of the wizarding world in the institution that helped further her natural inclination and love of supporting and guiding others.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):

Laurel Gwendolyn Douglass was born inside Hogwarts castle on a late October afternoon. She’d asked her mum and dad to tell her the story many times when she was very young. Her parents were living in Hogsmeade but Mum was the Head of Hufflepuff back then so she spent most of her time at the school. Dad would stop in for a visit now and then. They’d just been planning to get lunch when Laurel had decided it was time to enter the world.

They always said that Laurel arrived a little earlier than she was supposed to and that spontaneity was hard-wired in her from that moment. She was always spontaneous in the way she moved through life. Nothing ever seemed too permanent to Laurel and she was always changing her mind about what her favourite activity or colour or animal was. There was too much the world had to offer to not try everything possible!

She was eleven months old when she first became a big sister. Phillip became her new favourite thing and that didn’t change. They were so close in age that it was only natural that they were best friends. Phillip was the calmer presence to Laurel’s frantic energy and that created the perfect harmony for them. As they grew, Laurel would help Phillip out of his shell while he knew better than most how to get her to focus on one thing at a time or how to soothe her frenzied thoughts.

They were five and four when their next sibling arrived. Another boy, Lochlan, but Laurel hadn’t cared that she got another brother and not a sister. Family was family and she loved them all. It was with Lochlan that Laurel first learned her love of taking care of another being. She’d always been interested in animals and did whatever she could to help her parents when Phillip needed something but they were so close in age. With Lochlan she was somewhat capable of feeding him and taking care of some of his other basic needs. Sometimes she treated him like a living doll.

A couple years after Lochlan, Laurel did get a sister. She was ecstatic for a long time. She’d watched some of her friends who had sisters and it seemed like an even closer relationship than what she had with Phillip. Except as Belle got older, Laurel realized they were nothing alike. That didn’t stop her from wanting to be close with her sister. It was Belle that kept them apart. Sometimes the younger girl was outright cruel to Laurel. It didn’t stop Laurel from loving her, of course, but around the time that Laurel headed off to Hogwarts she did stop putting in so much effort. She could give everything to try to have a relationship with her sister but it would never work if she were the only one trying.

Hogwarts turned out to be even more amazing than all her childhood imaginings had conjured. Laurel was never the best in classes but she was always happy to go to them. It was just the way that some were structured that didn’t work well with her way of thinking. And the little issue that it was hard for her to sit still and concentrate for such long periods of time.

It was in the hospital wing that she found herself most at home. She’d spend well over the amount of time there than what was required of her. There were many times she’d even be late to a class or miss it entirely because she was always making sure the patients were comfortable or had someone to visit with.

After her third year her parents became aware that Laurel’s mental state was not at its best. She never thought anything was wrong but her parents noticed that she was both losing weight and falling behind in her studies because she was always worrying about someone or something else. The next two years were some of the hardest of her life. Laurel felt it was both a blessing and a curse to live in Hogsmeade, so close to Hogwarts. On one hand, she got to see her friends on occasion. On the other, they got to return to the castle while she stayed behind. The beginning and end of the school year was the hardest. Riding the Hogwarts Express was always one of her favourite things, even if she didn’t need to because she lived in Hogwarts. It was a tradition she hadn’t wanted to miss.

She worked hard over the two years she was away from school to make sure she learned to take care of herself as well as others. It wasn’t easy. It always made more sense to her to make sure others were taken care of before she was. And there was always someone else that needed something.

Eventually she learned a balance between giving and taking and with the help of a few close friends that told her when she was slipping back into old habits, Laurel was healthy enough to return to Hogwarts. It was an immense relief. She wasn’t sure what she’d have done if she couldn’t graduate with her friends.

Her last two years at Hogwarts weren’t anything spectacular. She didn’t receive any honours or titles. As a truly generous person, though, she was more happy that some of her friends got those opportunities. All she wanted was to be with them.

Life has still been quite the adventure since graduation. Laurel has travelled to several different continents to study healing in different cultures and one of her other favourite subjects, herbology. There was so much in common between plants and healing and it all fascinated her.

She always made sure to come back home at least twice a year, but seeing the world was something she didn’t think she could ever stop doing. There was just so much and constantly being on the move kept her from getting restless and bored.

Laurel wasn’t sure if she’d ever have the urge to stay in one place for a long time.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.

In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.

A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.

Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.

She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."

Explain yourself was what her face said.

Roleplay Response:

Whether applying to work at Hogwarts was a good idea or not was still unclear to Laurel. She wasn’t usually the most reliable person, no matter how hard she tried. There was also the issue of the guilt she would feel if she got the position and then decided she wanted to move to another country or something. How could she leave the kids once she knew all of them?

She gave her head a shake, along with shaking out her arms as she walked the familiar halls of Hogwarts. It didn’t make sense to worry about all of that right now. Her chances of even being considered were low. To actually be awarded the post was next to impossible.

Right now she needed to worry about getting to the Headmistress’s office. Everything else would come later.

Running late was a specialty of Laurel’s. Maybe if Hogwarts taught a class for that she’d definitely have a shot at teaching. Or more likely teaching the kids how not to be her and how successful they could be if they weren’t like her.

Even though she had arrived at the castle a bit late for her appointment, Laurel simply couldn’t help herself from stopping at a few different spots in the castle that had always been her most frequented spots. The corridor leading to Hufflepuff house was the first. She had several conversations with various portraits lining the hall.

Chatting with the portraits on her way to classes was one of the main reasons Laurel was late to class in her school days. Apparently that was going to continue and she wasn’t even working here yet.

But how could she not stop to catch up with some of her favourite Hogwarts residents? It wasn’t like she could stop by the castle every other week.

Finally she reached her destination and took a few deep breaths. She was already late, what was a bit longer? Laurel took a couple of moments to smooth out her light blue dress and gather her thoughts. She needed to remember to tell Anneka about all the time she’d spent learning about plants and healing and their similarities over the years. She needed to remember to point out how her knowledge could work in a couple different positions at the castle. Most of all, she needed to remember to be confident. Just because she was friendly and able to hold a conversation with just about anyone did not mean she always felt secure in herself.

With one last fortifying breath, Laurel knocked once and then pushed on the door to step inside.

“Anneka!” Laurel greeted her former Headmistress with a brilliant smile. A smile that died in wattage a second later when Anneka spoke.

Laurel gulped and one hand tugged a little on the skirt of her dress. She laughed nervously and tried to lighten the mood with, “You’re not all that surprised though, right? I’m sure you can remember how often I was reprimanded for my tardiness in school. That hasn’t changed much!”

Laurel tried smiling again and then realised her first words in an interview for a position where deadlines and promptness were very important were about the negative aspects of her personality.

She blew a breath out that was strong enough to ruffle some of her hair. What a great start.

Biography:

3 September 1960

”But, Mum, I-”

“No, Laurel. You know the rules. I know you want to help everyone but you’re not at Hogwarts right now because you want to help others so much you forget about yourself.”

Laurel looked across the kitchen at her Mum, at the way her eyes softened and the tightness around her mouth eased after having scolded Laurel. Neither of her parents were very strict but when they really felt it was necessary it was her Mum that took the lead.

Laurel’s own mouth turned downward; she didn’t like upsetting her mother. Or anyone, really. She managed to stay silent, even if she would normally give in and apologize. Her Mum had to see that as some sort of progress; she wasn’t giving in to what someone else wanted.

This situation had to be somewhat of a double-edged sword for her mother. Praise Laurel for doing what she wanted instead of what she was told or discipline her because what she wanted was to help the old couple down the road tend their garden and her parents told her she was supposed to be concentrating on herself.

After a good couple minutes, her Mum finally sighed and looked back over at Laurel. “Did you at least write in your journal today?”

Laurel bit her lip and looked away. She hadn’t and it was something her parents were insisting on as part of her therapy before they would consider letting her return to school. “Not yet.”

It was just so hard to write about her thoughts and feelings. She could never focus on just one for very long.

Her Mum watched her for a few moments longer before walking across the kitchen and embracing Laurel. Laurel returned the hug, wrapping her arms around her waist and squeezing. Her Mum laughed softly as they pulled apart and she looked down at Laurel.

“You’re almost as tall as me now.” They looked at each other, mother and daughter, for a long minute before Laurel was patted on the back and nudged in the direction of her bedroom. “Please go and try to write something.”

With a chest-heaving deep breath, Laurel turned and tried to brace herself to do just that.

19 October 1960

Dear Diary,

Today is my sixteenth birthday. I wish I could see my friends and show them that I can finally make a decent cupcake. I’ve always made them cupcakes for my birthday but it didn’t take them long to figure out that the house elves did most of the cooking for me.

I suppose that’s one of the only good things about being stuck at home for all these months. I’ve had a lot of time to improve my baking skills. I’ve noticed it helps me focus on something other than the hundreds of thoughts swimming around in my head. Now that I mostly know what I’m doing I’m able to concentrate on what I need to do for the recipe and not what everyone I care about but can’t see right now is doing.

Maybe by next year I can make everyone a feast and all my favourite people can celebrate with me.

17 December 1960

Dear Diary,

It’s almost Christmas and I’ll get to see both Phillip and Ren for the first time in...well, too long! I’m hoping I’ll be able to see Imogen during break too. I’ve been working on knitting house-colored scarves for them all. It’s not the most original gift but knitting is another hobby I’ve picked up recently. I’ve had to find lots of things to do while stuck inside the house. I mean, I get to go out into the garden but Mum and Dad still don’t want me seeing too many people yet.

It’s frustrating but I guess it’s always good to learn a new skill. And speaking of, I need to get back to working on those scarves. They already won’t be done by Christmas so I need to hurry!

9 February 1961

Dear Diary,

Mum and Dad are mad at me again. I think it’s really strange that my parents get angry at me for being caring when most parents would probably praise their kids for that. I get they’re worried about me because I do forget to eat sometimes if I get busy helping someone and time gets away from me.

That happened today. I only meant to help carry a few boxes over at Honeyduke’s because they had so many and I was just taking a walk. I didn’t even think about it when I started helping them stock the shelves. I only knew how busy they’d be getting with Valentine’s Day next week. I didn’t mean to spend six hours there and cause Mum and Dad to worry about me.

But now I’m stuck at home again. It feels like I’ll never get to go back to Hogwarts. My parents might want what’s best for me, except sometimes it feels like what they think is best is actually more hurtful.

I guess I’m back to square one for now.

27 May 1961

Dear Diary,

It’s finally almost Summer! It’s been a while since Hogwarts has had a break so I’m really looking forward to them getting out for the Summer. I miss my friends.

In other news, I’ve managed to convince Mum and Dad to let me go to camp as a sort of test to see whether I’ll be ready to get back to Hogwarts in September. If I can keep up with writing in here and make sure to take time for myself at least for a little bit every day they might let me go back!

So I’m going to cross my fingers and hope for the best. I really don’t like being separated from the people I love for so long.

Wish me luck, Diary!

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Laurel had never liked being by herself. It had always been easier for her to concentrate on other people. She wasn’t supposed to do that anymore. Or at least not as often. Taking care of and helping others was a part of her very soul and her parents recognized that. They had told her they only want her to also care for herself.

She supposed it made sense. If she didn’t take care of herself she couldn’t very well care for others.

Still, being alone in the gardens (even if it was one of her favourite parts of the Hogwarts grounds) was not something she wanted to do for an hour or so every day. She was trying, despite the days that she would rather have lunch with her friends, catch up with the kitchen elves or visit some of the patients in the hospital wing.

On those days she still managed to force herself out to the mostly quiet gardens, allowing the buzz of insects, the singing of birds or even just the breeze floating through to take her out of her own head and pay attention to what was around her.

Today she’d brought her journal out, she just hadn’t actually written anything in it yet. Instead there were little pockets of flowers drawn in the corners, rainbows along the edges of the parchment.

Sometimes she just didn’t want to force any words to come out onto the page and she didn’t think there was anything wrong with that. As long as she was taking some time for herself.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

Laurel startled at the harsh tone of voice and turned to see what was happening and found a boy trampling through the flowers. She frowned at the treatment of them, choosing to keep her thoughts about that to herself.

Instead, she chose to keep an eye on him, wanting to make sure he didn’t ruin too many of them. It was while she was watching that he gave an obscenely loud sneeze. It actually made her cringe; it sounded like it hurt. Just as she was about to go over to the poor boy he seemed to spot her.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Laurel bit the corner of her lip as she headed in his direction. “I didn’t mean to stare. I was just about to ask you if I could help you with anything?”

She gave him a friendly smile with a questioning look.

Name: Laurel Gwendolyn Douglass

Birthday: 19/10/44

Hometown: Hogsmeade

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): 1, 2

Biography:

Laurel had grown up in the shadow of Hogwarts castle in Hogsmeade and yet it felt like a dream, a fantasy that she’d never experience for herself. She would watch when the students came to Hogsmeade some weekends, would talk to as many as would allow her to and still it didn’t seem real that she would ever be allowed to join their ranks.

It was probably one of the only things she actually feared. To be left behind while she watched all her friends go to Hogwarts. Immy was already there; if Laurel didn’t get to join Ren and Apple and all her other friends she would have been the saddest she had ever been in her whole life.

On the morning of her eleventh birthday, when she’d been helping Mum get her siblings ready by attempting to plait Belle’s hair while her sister squirmed and wriggled, an owl tapped on the kitchen window and Laurel’s heart felt like it had both dropped into her stomach and flown up into her throat. After releasing the few twists she’d managed to get into the three year old’s hair, Laurel ran to the window and pushed it open enthusiastically but as gently as she could muster so she didn’t scare the owl.

When the envelope was in her hands, the owl gone from the sill and the window closed again, Laurel looked at the front and saw her name on it. Her name! She let out a squeal and ran around the kitchen and living room.

“Mum! Dad! Everyone! I got my letter!”

She was going to Hogwarts and she couldn’t ever remember being so happy.

Her excitement was dampened a little when she looked over to Phillip. He was watching her quietly, a small frown on his face. It would be almost another year before he found out if he would also be going. She would have to spend the next ten months making it up to him, making sure he knew she wouldn’t forget about him when it was time for her to leave for Hogwarts.

House Request: Hufflepuff

Personality:
Laurel loves everything and sees the value in all life, right down to a stray mushroom on the forest floor. She always takes care of others before herself, trying to make sure everyone is happy because that’s what makes her happy. Probably seen as over-friendly or trying too hard because she does want to be friends with as many people as possible. She thrives on personal connections.

Appearance:
Her trademark is her large, warm smile. She’s almost always smiling. Copious amounts of hair (passed down from her mum) in a slightly lighter shade of brown that closely matches her dad’s. Large, warm chocolate eyes are also a close match with her dad. A little tall for eleven and somewhat clumsy she can often be seen wearing pretty dresses with dirt and grass stains on them. Laurel likes girly things but that won’t stop her from also jumping in a mud puddle or digging her hands into dirt to plant something.

Option I:

Laurel had skipped her way across the Entrance Hall after leaving the Great Hall (she still couldn’t get over the ceiling!) and spotted a girl that looked to be around her own age. It would be another opportunity to make a new friend and she wouldn’t pass that up.

“Hey! Wait for me,” she’d called but the girl had continued on her path as though she hadn’t heard.

Undaunted, Laurel followed after the girl, her long hair flying behind her as she raced to catch up. They were headed down the dungeons corridor! It was another great opportunity because it was one of the areas that Laurel hadn’t really explored yet. She preferred being outdoors as much as possible so it was the Hogwarts grounds that had first gotten her attention.

The hall leading toward the dungeons was much darker than the entrance but Laurel continued her skipping, a bright smile on her face as she tried catching up to the girl.

And then she heard her voice.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

“Hello!” Laurel called back immediately and saw the girl flinch as if she’d been frightened. A small hand raised to cover her mouth. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

She offered a gentle smile in addition to her apology. “I don’t think there’s an Emma Birch here anymore, my Mum said she died.” Her smile disappeared and a sadness blanketed her features for a moment.

Another smile grew, just a little smaller than usual, as she reached a hand out toward the other girl, “I’m Laurel. It’s nice meet you!”

Biography: (100 words minimum.)

Laurel grabbed her favourite book off the shelf, a BIG red one that she definitely made herself without any help from Mum or Dad, no none at all! She flipped to her last story and began to read...

Laurel's Story Time!

Today was a Best Day. I turned Phillip's hair yellow! Mum said I did anyhow I don't know what I did to make it happen! I was just there in my dress twirling because it was raining which means I can't twirl outside least not when it's raining as thick as flobberworm mucus as Mum says. My new dress was white and yellow and I was just in the kitchen with Mum twirling like I said when Phillip ran straight into me! He said he was practising a quidditch move which isn't right he didn't even have a broom! But little brothers are RUDE sometimes I guess I still love him. Anyhow he ran into me and we both got knocked over and I might maybe not meaning to grabbed his hair when I fell. When we both stood I started laughing so hard I fell over again! His dark hair was a pale yellow. Not what Mum and Dad would call a Hufflepuff yellow but it wasn't the right colour his hair should have been! Mum heard me laughing so hard and came to see. I thought I was in Trouble but after she looked at Phillip forever she started laughing and I started again too! Phillip didn't have a clue! When Mum picked him up to show him in a mirror the look of surprise on his face was the Best and then we all started laughing. Mum says that means maybe I'll be good at figuring things like she was! She used a different word but it was too long for me to remember.

That's my story today, thanks for reading!

Laurel smiled a toothy grin, one of her lower teeth missing, and put the book back on the shelf.

"Hey, Phillip! Wanna play?"

And she was off to create another story.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
Godric Park was one of her favourite places! It was just down the street from home and it had a lot more things to play on then the backyard.

It was also a really nice day today and that always made playing more fun! Except she wanted something else to do other than play with her little brothers. Phillip had stolen her toy wand the other day so she was Mad at him and Lochlan could barely run a couple feet before he tripped over his own so he wasn't very much fun. She couldn't play the game called tag that Mum had taught them with a BABY.

But she needed something to do or she would get BORED. Laurel got cranky when she got bored. Just as she had this thought, something went whipping by, ruffling her long,
messy brown hair.

"Flying!" She wanted to fly!
