Suggestions & Questions / About orphans
« on: 03/04/2016 at 22:46 »

My character Mirella is an orphan and I was wondering, how would she get money to buy school supplies and other stuff she needs?  ??? Is there any kind of support program in place for orphans? I was just wondering because I thought of roleplaying her at Diagon Alley and these questions popped in my head.  :P

Biography:
Not much is known of Mirella's origins, except that she was born in Kyoto, Japan.  Abandoned by her mother, she spent the first year of her life in an orphanage there, until Amy and Thomas Appleton adopted her from England in 1943.  The previously childless Appletons' were loving parents towards Mirella, showering her with plenty of warmth and attention, of which her life had previously lacked.  She was the centre of their life, their pride and joy, their princess and their gift from above.  Until 1937, that is, when she suddenly disappeared from their lives forever.

Very little is left of Mirella's memory of the time warp, when she was found by herself in 1937 at the age of five, suddenly appearing in a London suburb devoid of her familiar surroundings and loving parents.  But memories don't need to be vivid for the heart to remember trauma.  The details are hazy now, but she was eventually identified as a muggleborn witch, placed into an orphanage where she was labelled with the M badge, and dumped into an environment lacking any of the love and kindness she had previously known.  Life in the orphanage was harsh, filled with cruel, insensitive staff as muggleborn discrimination was at its peak. Mirella's obvious Asian heritage did nothing to improve matters.

She quickly became extremely shy and quiet in response to her treatment there, keeping to herself and rarely talking with the other children.  It was her way to remain as invisible as possible; the only way she found of protecting herself from hurt.  Despite being surrounded by people, Mirella felt utterly alone and memories of her parents (however vague as she grew older) would haunt her thoughts and dreams. With time, the issue of muggleborn discrimination began to subside and life slowly improved for the children within the orphanage.  Mirella remained painfully timid, but as it approached time for her to leave for Hogwarts, she began making a few friends and opening up a little.

Once admitted into Hogwarts, Mirella's life changed considerably.  It was a beautiful school, with classes that enthralled her and new friends to bring joy to her days.  Though she had known that she was a witch - albeit a muggleborn, the wrong kind - Mirella had no experience of what that really meant.  Sure, she saw magic once in a while, performed by the orphanage staff, but never had she experienced the joy of practicing magic herself. For this reason, her classes at Hogwarts, and learning about the magic powers within her, filled her with a joy for life that had been previously missing. Moreover, her house gave her a sense of belonging, making her feel (almost) as though she had a family again.  While she still suffered discrimination and bullying from time to time, it hurt less as she now had good friends who stood by her, preventing her from ever feeling truly alone.  Mirella's shyness had yet to subside, but at the very least, some of the suffering caused from the time warp seemed to plague her a little less.

House Request: Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff

Personality: Mirella is a painfully shy, sensitive girl still struggling with her lack of self-confidence.  Whenever in a crowd, she reverts back to the silent, frightened child she was back in the orphanage, trying to make herself as invisible as possible.  Just passing through jam-packed hallways, or sitting in the Great Hall, makes her anxious and uncomfortable.  Unlike at the orphanage, however, Mirella befriends others with ease, her sweet, gentle nature making her approachable despite her timidity.  She's a kindhearted girl who stands by her friends and like a big sister, incessantly frets over their happiness and well-being.  Despite being more social than she was as a child, however, Mirella still feels most relaxed and comfortable when she is on her own.  Her favorite place to be is in her dorm, cozy in her bed with a good book, or out on the grounds, walking alone, surrounded by the soothing beauty of nature.

While the class setting intimidates her, as she constantly fears having to speak up in public, Mirella loves most of her subjects and is passionate about learning.  One of her greatest joys is to study and read from her textbooks.  She's a serious, driven student who applies herself fully to all she learns.  Her favorite subjects are Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures, because of her affinity towards nature and animals.  The one class she despises is Divination as it's a subject she finds difficult to grasp or believe in.  Defense against the Dark Arts is another class that she dislikes, mostly because she is often obliged to practice magic in front of others.  She experiences a sort of 'stage fright' in those cases, freezing up in her fear to make a mistake in front of her fellow classmates.

Appearance:

Mirella has thick black hair that falls in waves down her back.  Her eyes are wide-set and black, somewhat sad-looking, framed by straight, sparse eyebrows that slant downward in worry.  When she smiles, however, there is an unmistakable warmth and kindness reflected in her eyes and in the curving of her eyebrows.  Mirella has a golden-brown colored skin, smooth and blemish-free and devoid of much hair.  Her face is oval with a small button nose, wide, thick lips that curl upward (as if in preparation to smile), and small ears that hug closely to her head.  She has a somewhat bony, fragile-looking frame and is much smaller than average.  Her back is slightly hunched, reflecting her subconscious need to make herself smaller and less visible to others.

'Well, actually, that's what I was about to ask you,' Mirella answered timidly, blushing slightly while diverting her glance to the grass.  She had seen the boy rush outside and stomp carelessly through the flowers, clearly searching for something.  Mirella was never one to ignore when someone needed a hand, always ready to help if she could.  It was too much a part of her nature to let timidity get in the way.  Of course, she did feel embarrassed when he turned his head towards her, snot leaving a wet trail above his lip, even after he wiped some of it on his robe. She hoped glancing at the ground would prevent his embarrassment - or at least her own, from having witnessed what she did.

'Did you lose something?' she asked tentatively, while searching her robe pocket for a handkerchief.  With a friendly smile, she handed it to him, approaching and peering down at the flowers in hopes to aid his search.  Mirella couldn't help but frown as she looked at the beautiful flowers trampled underneath the boy's feet.  She loved flowers so much and to see them crushed the way they were made her want to shove the boy aside and search in his place.  That's when Mirella had an idea.  Remembering his sneeze, it occurred to her that the boy must be allergic to the flowers' perfume.  So, she hastily added, 'Why don't you get out of the flower patch and let me search for you?  You seem terribly allergic and I'd be happy to help.'  This way, the poor flowers would be free from his careless feet and Mirella would be able to help out like she had hoped.  She stood awaiting his reply, nervously tucking her long black hair behind her ears.
