Suggestions & Questions / Silent Casting?
« on: 31/12/2015 at 03:23 »
Hi! I had a question about silent casting. My character was born mute, so I need to use silent casting rules for her, right? Are there any? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, I just want to make sure before I start writing spells and stuff.

Biography:
Once upon a time, there was a witch from a proud magical family, who fell in love with a muggle man. Her family did not approve of their love, and so all but her aunt Karin turned their backs on the witch when they announced their intentions to marry. This hurt her, of course, because her family was very precious to her, but she did not regret her love and so decided that she would make a new family with her new husband.

They settled in a small muggle village using money from her husband's job in the city. Happiness was theirs; their small home always smelling of wonderful meals and filled with laughter. Her aunt even came to visit often, most delightedly to host a small baby shower for the then expecting couple.

Kell Amelia D’Scordato was born with flaming red hair and cheeks made even brighter by unusually silent screams. It did not take them long to discover that their precious baby girl was born with irreversible damage to her vocal chords. She would be mute for the entirety of her life. Her father's family encouraged them to drop the baby off at an orphanage, but they wouldn’t hear it - they'd fought too hard for their love to give up the result of it.

The little girl was only a year old when her father died, too young to remember him as she grew. Unable to support them, the witch and her daughter moved into her aunt’s home and returned to the magical world. Still estranged from the rest of her family, the witch tried to assist her aunt in her herb shop as best she could. The strain of losing her husband was too much, though, and the witch couldn’t bear it any longer. When she was committed to St. Mungo’s, Kell was left in the care of her great-aunt, who she saw as her grandmother. She moved into her grandmother's cottage quite far away from Buckinghamshire.

Kell was a curious child whose mane of flaming red curls was often seen bouncing around Karin’s cottage as she explored. She loved nature and animals, often scaring away the local children by accident when she beamed and showed them a salamander or a slug or a toad she'd found in the garden.

There were many reasons why she struggled to make friends; her sunny disposition, her inability to ‘properly’ communicate, the strange things that seemed to happen around her when she was angry or afraid. The other children thought she was a freak, and gradually she grew more and more shy, preferring the company of her grandmother or the animals she found in the garden. When visitors came to her grandmother's shop, the young girl hid herself, worried that the nasty things the other children said were true - that someone would take her away to an institution and leave her there forever.

When her letter to attend Hogwarts arrived, her grandmother promptly wrote back to excuse the girl, wanting to train her at home. At first, Kell was in agreement with this, still scared of what could happen if others misunderstood what she was. They lived quite far away anyways, and her grandmother did not have much for transportation - all things that the girl used to excuse herself from being surrounded by others who wouldn’t understand.

After a few years and with a better understanding of things, Kell finally asked her grandmother to let her go to school; she'd learned what she could at home, but she wanted to explore. She was still quite painfully shy, but she wasn't as afraid anymore. If so many witches and wizards went to school every year then it couldn't be all that bad, right?

Eventually , her grandmother reluctantly agreed, and they moved back to the village where Kell was born to accommodate the change. If her granddaughter needed her, Karin would be closer to the amenities of Wizarding London.

Fifteen years old and quite nervous, Kell has been preparing herself for the chaos of her first year of proper schooling.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Your choice

Personality:
Innocent to the point of being painfully naive, Kell is prone to seeing the good in everyone and everything. Unfortunately, this means that she can be dense when it comes to social situations, especially since she didn’t have many friends when she was growing up. She can be shy around new or large groups of people, but this is mostly because she gets self-conscious of her disability. Even though she is pretty adaptive when it comes to communicating in other ways (BSL does not really exist yet in history), she is easily flustered when faced with communication barriers and gets embarrassed easily.

She is not much for studying, preferring to be outside in the gardens or finding new animals to play with. Head in the clouds, she doesn’t always notice when she fades into the background of things, usually too distracted by daydreaming or enjoying nature. She wants to try to make friends, though, and intends to try her best this year.

Appearance:
Kell is about average height for a girl her age, but willowy and graceful in figure in a way that makes her seem taller. She has bright green eyes and curly red hair that she sometimes (read: rarely) treats with a potion to straighten. Porcelain skin is marked only by freckles and sometimes sunburn.

Her clothing style is light and airy - simple handmade  sundresses that she can easily explore in, usually stained with grass and dirt after long days. She favors shoes she can easily take off, preferring to run around barefoot in the grass. Her robes are second-hand and a little shabby, like her uniform underneath, but it doesn’t bother her.

Option 2:

The gardens were the only place Kell really felt at home. These gardens were so much bigger than her grandmother’s, but they felt familiar. There was peace in the verdant lawns and colorful blooms, quiet solace away from the hustle and bustle of the busy castle. She was much more suited to this than the chaos inside.

Sitting in the grass, the girl was surprised to see a rat come scampering out of the flowers near her. With hesitation nowhere to be found, she reached out to pick up the fuzzy creature, smiling brightly as she stroked its little head. Who had a rat out here? Surely this little cutie had a name and a home? It looked too well groomed to just be a wild rat, at any rate.

The silence was shattered by tromping footsteps, and she soon had an answer.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

Kell looked up with wide eyes, surprised by the outburst and the sudden appearance of the rather grumpy-looking boy. She looked down at the rat, then stared up at the boy. He must have been this furry little thing’s owner. He sure looked angry, though…

His sneezes were loud and startled her more, and she flinched as she held the rat to her chest protectively.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Oh!

Shaking her head vigorously and sending red curls tumbling this way and that, Kell averted her eyes with pinkened cheeks as she finally held the rat out to his owner shyly. She couldn’t answer him, and she was sure that if she tried to, it would only end in both of them being flustered.
