Biography: (100 words minimum.)
Named after one of the famed founders of Hogwarts, Rowena Ravenclaw, Rowena comes from a proud pure-blood family that has been in the running for at least seven tracable generations. Her second name initially planned to be like Ravenclaw’s daughter Helena, her parents pulled out of this decision when they found out about Helena’s rebellious nature against her mother, and decided to stick with a safer ‘Elena’. Rowena has always been told she is of pure-blood, even though this isn’t the case. Rowena namely is the result of an affair between mr. DeCourcy and one of his office employees, a halfblood witch named Emmeline Jones. To hide this disgrace tot he DeCourcy family name, ms. DeCourcy quickly agreed on taking the girl into the family, to pretend it was her own child, and therefore of pure blood, instead of being “a half-breed” – as ms. DeCourcy refers to anything else that isn’t a pureblood. The family moved from Diagon Ally to the mixed town of Tinworth in Cornwall, partly to escape Emmeline Jones, partly because the Hexenreich had been exposed by that time, and mr. DeCourcy feared prosecution thanks to his role at Gringotts, where he had processed funds for Hexenreich members. Having moved when she was one years old, Rowena doesn’t remember much of their former home at the Diagon Ally. Her parents being disgusted by the high amount of Muggles in their new town, Rowena was raised in a cottage far away from the main village, and home-schooled fully, to make sure that sudden signs of magical abilities with her weren’t noticed by Muggles. The DeCourcy’s hired someone to look after the gardens, and someone to do the house related matters, a (witch) girl named Minerva, whom Rowena would soon regard as her only friend. One day when travelling to get supplies at the Diagon Ally, Minerva allowed Rowena to come with her, a day which Rowena will recall as the happiest day of her life. Rowena learned most of her norms and values from her parents, who leaned to pure-blood supremacy. Rowena’s parents had a joyless marriage, as the attempts to put a true pure-blood on the earth, to save the DeCourcy name, proved persistingly unsuccesful. Ms. DeCourcy, turning bitter due to these events, started to believe they were cursed when they took Rowena in, and turned cold and distant towards the girl. Rowena maintained a better relationship with her father, who brought presents for her after he returned from longer journeys (having become a dealer in rare magical artifacts) and with Minerva, who has stayed with the family until current day. Spending a lot of time alone and in the house, Rowena proved an avid reader, and apart from reading children’s books and stories, has also read Hogwarts: A History, in anticipation of her acceptence there, as she can’t wait to see it. Rowena’s first shown sign of magic was that she broke the glass of the jar of sweets in the kitchen, when she wanted one but couldn’t reach it. Initially mad at this, ms. DeCourcy later was pleased, as at least now, there was a chance that Rowena wouldn’t turn out to be a Squib; the family’s worst fear. Rowena would also come to share this, as she feels that not being able to show magic to her parents would bet he ultimate falure. As of yet, she remains unknown of her history, still under the impression that mr. and ms. DeCourcy are both her parents.

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
Rowena’s eyes widened; she hadn’t planned to be spotted, just to watch. The girl was staring at her now, clearly in anticipation of an answer. Rowena’s mouth opened and closed, still being undecided on what to say. Then she thought of her mother, and what she would think if she saw these kids playing with brooms – and her with them. This was their first holliday in years, and it would be the last if she was seen. ‘I can’t,’ she simply said, turning away. Her eyes skimmed over the broomstick the girl had thrown away. She’d never rode a broomstick before. She wasn’t sure she wanted to, either; it had looked hard, watching the girl, and seeing the heights the three boys above her had reached, she only felt fear and worry about what would happen if something went wrong. The girl seemed let down by Rowena’s answer. ‘Are you sure?’ She moved closer. ‘The two of us could just play too, if you’d like. My brother’s useless anyway.’ She send a foul glance up at the sky. Rowena could barely see the figures anymore, so cloudy it was. ‘What’s your name?’the girl asked. Rowena wasn’t sure about this conversation. For all she knew, she could be talking to a halfblood right now – or worse, a Muggleborn. Her mother always said that Muggleborns had stolen their powers of actual wizards and witches, and that they were cruel and evil. Rowena has asked her mother how you could steal magic, as it wasn’t a visable presence. ‘They have their ways, girl,’ ms. DeCourcy had said. ‘Be very careful of them. They can only enhance their power by taking yours.’ Rowena examined the girl in front of her. She didn’t have yellow eyes, or vertical pupils, telltale signs of dark magic. The girl raised an eyebrow, and Rowena recalled the question. ‘My name is Rowena,’ she said, slightly emberassed. The girl’s face lit up. ‘That’s a really beautiful name!’ she said enthousiastically. Her face clouded a little. ‘Mine’s Janey. After my great-grandmother or something.’ She sniffed. ‘Boring.’ Rowena restrained herself from nodding – that might be rude, and she didn’t even think it was that bad a name. ‘Have you’ve ever flown a broomstick before?’ Janey pointed at the broom she had just discarded. ‘You’re welcome to try. It won’t go that far up anyway.’ Rowena glanced at the thing. Suddenly, she was swept away by a rush of carelessness. ‘Okay.’ She walked towards the broom. She was fairly certain that her mother would clarify a broomstick as “unlady-like” and that she would never get one, no matter how nicely she asked. Now was her chance to try. She picked up the broom, feeling the wood vibrate slightly in her hand. She glanced over her shoulder towards Janey, who nodded heavily. Rowena took a deap breath. Then, she swung her right leg over the broom and carefully sat down. For a moment, she was unsure what to do – she’d read that sometimes, you had to speak to an object before it moved. She looked at the sky, at the only direction she could logically go. ‘Up?’ she said hesitantly. The broom started to move – upwards, ike she had told it to do, but much faster than Rowena had anticipated. She barely managed to take hold of the handle in time. ‘Stop!’ she yelled instinctively, panicked at the speed of the thing. And suddenly, the broom stopped moving, hovering, still slightly vibrating a short distance from the ground. Rowena found herself smiling. She’d done it! She had not only managed to get on a broomstick, but also to stay on a broomstick while she was floating. Maybe she could – ‘Rowena?’ The smile vanished from Rowena’s face, and she looked towards the road to see who it was. It was Minerva, and Rowena felt a flash of relief. ‘What are you doing?’ Minerva sounded worried. ‘I’m coming down,’ Rowena said, hiding the sad tone in her voice. What she hadn’t anticipated, however, was the broom also reacting on her normal tones, and, as soon as it had heard “down”, it had dived towards the ground. Rowena landed roughly on the surface, and the last thing she thought before she fainted was that broomsticks were actually loads of fun.

Hi Rowena and welcome to Hogwarts!

I loved reading your bio. I can't wait to see if Rowena ends up finding out about her true lineage!

However, in your roleplay samble, you control Janey's actions in addition to Rowena's. This is powerplaying, and goes against site rules.

Quote
You may control only your character. You cannot post that someone’s character did something or said something without having that player's permission beforehand. This includes impersonating another character, or determining whether a spell your character uses affects the other character. An example of this would be:
Correct: John asked Helen to come along, hoping that she would follow him to see the Squid.
Incorrect: John asked Helen to come along. Helen replied with a yes.

If you could please rewrite your sample application to remove all instances of powerplaying, you can than repost your entire revised application and we'll be more than happy to give it another look.

Thank you,
Marina

Rowena got a reckless thought, only strengthened by her mother’s image. ‘You know what,’ she said slowly. ‘I actually don’t really have other plans.’ She smiled, looking at the broom more confidently now. Maybe this holiday could be fun after all. ‘Do you mind?’ Rowena asked. It seemed fine with the girl, so Rowena walked up to the broom and picked it up. Slightly wary, she felt the wood vibrate in her hand. Why not, she thought again, regaining her confidence. It wasn’t like she could get that hurt, right? She probably wasn’t going to reach the heights of the other boys anyway. She swung her leg over the broom, sitting down (rather uncomfortably, as it was her first time). ‘Okay…’ Rowena muttered. ‘Up?’ She’d said it quietly, and hesitantly, but the broom reacted at once, and soon, she was lifted up in the air. Rowena smiled; maybe she could be braver than she initially had thought.

Hi Rowena, thanks for making those changes to your application!

There's one small thing that also needs tweaking with your biography: you mention that the family moved when the Hexenreich were overthrown, and that Rowena was only one at the time. If she's 10 now, she would have been born in 1943/44 (depending on her birth month) which means she would have turned one in 1944/45. The Ministry only began to seize back control in 1950 (with Hexenreich members disappearing after the collapse of the magical barriers in 1948; you can read more about the Hexenreich plot here). This means that either Rowena would have been older than one (closer to 7/8 years old, or 4-5 at the earliest) when the family moved, or that they moved before the Hexenreich were overthrown. Please could you edit your biography to reflect this, so that it matches with our site/canon timeline.

Your RP sample looks great now, thanks for editing it! There's still one moment that might be construed as powerplay:
Quote
It seemed fine with the girl, so Rowena walked up to the broom and picked it up.

Here, you're still assuming the other player's reaction by saying 'it seemed fine with the girl'. If you could remove that phrase or edit it slightly (e.g. to, 'hoping it was fine with the girl, Rowena walked up to the broom...'), that would solve the issue.

Once you've made the required changes, please repost your entire revised application below in the same thread, and we'll be happy to take another look. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM myself or another staff member. Thanks!
