Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Étain Marie O'Brien

Birthday: 4 June 1939

Hometown: Hogsmeade/ Galway, IE

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): 6th or 7th (she really should be a 7th year, though)

Biography:
Étaín was born the daughter of Maeve O'Brien-Draginoff and Demetri Draginoff. She's never met her father, and truthfully, doesn't even really know who he is. Just before she left home for her 1st year at Hogwarts, her mother had set her down to explain the oddly complicated backstory that she hadn't even known she came with. She had figured out long ago that Ashling and Seamus weren't actually her siblings, but were cousins that her mum had taken in. then she heard her mum's side of the story in regards to her father. That he was in Azkaban, to her knowledge, though she hadn't really bothered to keep up with all the facts once his 'trechery' had been revealed.

Her mother had been an Auror for as long as she could remember. Now, though, the Irish woman had declared that she had no intention of returning to her job at the Ministry. Something on the last long trip she had taken had changed her, and Etain wasn't sure if it was a good change or a bad one.

Maeve's work as an Auror and frequent trips resulted in her spending a lot of time with Ashling. This has resulted in her spending quite a lot of time with the orphans of the Children's Home. Even though she has a mother, she can sort of relate to the children at the Home, because her mother is gone more often than not. She's figured out that's why Ashling chose to work there too.

Spending time with Seamus is a horse of a different color. Now that she's older, spending time with her 'brother' has changed. Where he used to take her out for ice cream or shopping, she now learns more useful skills that aren't generally taught to wizarding folk. Though she's not exactly sure she wants to follow in his footsteps, she's still eager to learn. Better to have her options open to her.

Her years at Hogwarts have been the only real path that has pulled her forward. It began when Seamus handed her a map of the school, all neatly folded, with the whispered instructions to tell no one of its existence and to try to improve it while it was in her possession. As soon as she had settled into her House, she had begun exploring and researching what improvements she might make. By her fifth year she had mastered a few permanent preservation charms and applied them to the map. Now, in her final year at Hogwarts, it’s time to choose which path she will follow.

House Request: Slytherin

Personality:
Étaín's got a good mix of intelligence and common sense. She's figured out a lot of things that her mother probably doesn't think she knows. She's fairly well grounded, and has figured out that hopes and dreams are only ideas, but it's actions that get a person ahead in life. It's actions that define who we are. That hasn't kept her from being a typical little kid, but she learns very quickly which buttons get her what she wants, and which ones get her in hot water. She's learned how to turn certain situations to her advantage, and when not to press her luck, which has lead to more than one occurrence in which she has gotten what she wanted, only to be asked how she managed to convince them to give it to her after the fact. This is most often the case with treats.

Appearance:
Like nearly all O'Briens, Étaín has red hair and hazel eyes. She likes her eyes, because they tend to change with her mood. She's surpassed her mother in hight, which has only served to bolster her ego. Her face claim is Sophie Turner.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Etain raised an eyebrow at the boy who had decided that allergies and tromping through flower gardens was a good mix. It was impolite of him to assume she was even looking at him, and not gazing at the flowers that he had just trampled like a heard of small elephants. And then he had the gall to accuse her of being rude? The nerve!

If he knew who she was...who her parents were...

They're not really that important, she thought bitterly.

"You're one to talk," she retorted in a droll voice. He was only a couple years younger than her, but that was no excuse for manners.

"Perhaps you should have named him Houdini, though," she commented, holding the boy's rat by the scruff of its neck before walking over to deposit the rodent into his hands.

Now she really wanted to figure out how to restore the flowers that the boy had so rudely trampled. They had been beautiful moments before, and she had been debating about sketching them. Now they looked a lot more like she felt deep down. Trampled. Denied things that should have been.

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Étaín Marie O'Brien

Birthday: 4 June 1939

Hometown:Hogsmeade

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): 1st, please.  I'll have to wait another year for her to be a 2nd year.

Biography:
Étaín was born the daughter of Maeve O'Brien-Draginoff and Demetri Draginoff. She's never met her father, and truthfully, doesn't even really know who he is. She knows she must have a father somewhere, or she wouldn't be there. If she asked, she would probably be told that she didn't need to worry about it, or that her mother would explain everything when she was older.

Her mother has been an Auror for as long as she can remember. As such, she spends most of her time with her sister, Ashling, and her brother, Seamus, both of whom are grown, but still prefer to keep Maeve and little Étaín company. She knows they're actually her cousins, but that her mother took them in because she wasn't the sort to let any members of her family suffer, even if they were from a part of the family that had purposefully distanced themselves from the rest.

She doesn't get to go with him as often, but when she does, he takes her out for ice cream and they play and have lots of fun. She knows that he's part of the Wise-in-gam-moot….whatever that is, and can only figure that they must get a lot of days off. Other than that, she doesn't really know what he does with his time. Only that sometimes he says it's not a good idea for her to tag along.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Please reply to one of the Sample Roleplays below.

She was new here, just like every other first year, and she was every bit as curious. It seemed like no one game much thought to a Slytherin walking around the dungeons, but the fact of the matter was that she wasn't entirely sure that she was supposed to be outside the Common Room at all right now.

Sometimes rules were a little vague.

And sometimes they were made to be broken.

Not knowing if it was against the rules to be outside of your dorm meant that it was prudent to remain unseen. Which was why the sound of footsteps in the main corridor of the dungeons sent Étaín ducking into the shadows as quickly and quietly as her cloak would allow.

From her hiding spot, the Irish girl watched as a blonde accented in the scarlet and gold of Gryffindor passed her. What was a lion cub doing here in a den of snakes? The opportunity was simply too good to pass up. Her mother, and both of her older siblings had been pranksters at one time or another, and the girl had learned a long time ago that the call of her blood was not one to be ignored. Even if Ashling and Seamus weren't her siblings by birth, they were still her cousins by blood.

Étaín padded along after the girl, but she must have scuffed her shoe or accidentally kicked a pebble. Even the smallest sounds echoed against the stone walls that surrounded the two girls. She froze as the blonde stopped, clearly startled by something.

For a moment, the little snake wondered if the older students who had dared this little lion to come down here, (for why else would a Gryffindor be past the swimming pool when there was no Potions class to sit through,) were watching. Pride and territory overrode such concerns, and a slim, wicked sort of grin slid onto her lips as the red head moved to lean against one of the stone arches of the passage, her arms crossed over her chest.

She listened as the girl hesitantly called out, and then steeled her courage and directly addressed the ghost of Emma Birch. So that had been what she had been dared to do? Find the ghost of a 7th Year Slytherin who had, rather heroically, given her life in an attempt to thwart the Hexenreich.

This little blonde had some guts, even if she didn't sound like it.

"What are you doing in my dungeon?" Étaín's matter-of-fact tone left little argument for the blonde, at least in the red-head's own opinion.

"You shouldn't be here, you know," She continued, sounding somewhat bored of the whole idea of there even being a Gryffindor in this part of the Castle. As though they thought it was some act of bravery, when the students of her house figured they simply didn't like the dark and dank atmosphere that the dungeons tended to carry.

Biography: (100 words minimum.)
Étain Marie O'Brien was born 4 June 1939 to Maeve Arlain O'Brien. Her father, Demetri Draginoff, had already been sentenced to Azkaban for a myriad of crimes. In seven years, she had never seen his face, except for a photograph her mother had kept. Having only lived with her mother, the only change Étain saw with the divorce was that Maeve smiled more.

Almost as soon as her older sister graduated school, she became a fixture in young Étain’s life. Taking her to the park, and to work where she got to play with the kids at the orphanage. Her favorite part about spending time with Ashling was their picnic lunch in the park on the days that they went to the Home together.

Soon after, Seamus graduated. He had a skill with potions, and she loved to watch him work. There were times, however, that he felt a particular potion was too dangerous for her to be in the room with him. After the first time trying to keep her away while he was brewing, Seamus devised a small windowed room where the glass was specially made not to shatter in the event of an explosion. It allowed her to watch him work, and still remain safe.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:

Ice blue eyes, the only feature that she had gotten from her father, watched the boys as they streaked across the sky, only to drift down and rest on a girl about her age that had been left behind by them. She watched as the girl seemed to win the battle of wills with her broom, only to be dumped off it a moment later. She watched as the broom was shoved handle-first into the ground.

It was then that she stepped out from behind the tree where her sister had told her to wait. The girl sanded at her a little before mellowing.

“I would love to play. Do you know how to play jacks?”

Étain always carried a set of jacks with her. Ashling had bought it for her when she had started going to the Children’s Home with her. All the kids there seemed to love it, and she had bonded with several of them over a game or two. Maybe this girl would like playing jacks too.
