Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Barclay Angus Duncan

Birthday: 5th November 1937

Hometown: Inverness, Scotland, The United Kingdom

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): fifth/sixth

Biography:
If you are applying to be a first, second, or third year, your biography must be at least one hundred words long.
If you are applying to be a fourth year or above, your biography must be at least three hundred words long.

Barclay has had a relatively chaotic beginning to life, despite not knowing it, his grandparents forever keeping this a secret, only a letter remains, encased in a box, kept in the attic of his grandparents home, addressed to one, Barclay Angus Duncan in his father’s hand. It was believed that it would not be needed, but had been wrote on the off chance. Mary and Angus Duncan were murdered on 5th November 1940, having been kidnapped by war spies, they were found later that evening in London, hundreds of miles away from their Inverness home. They left their only child parentless.

It was quickly decided that Barclay would remain with his grandparents, instead of being given to the care of one of his aunts or uncles, they had a large family, and it was Iris, his grandmother that would not give him up, as was stated in the Last Will and Testament of Angus Duncan, so that the youngling would not cause too much havoc with his parents in their old age. However, Iris refused, and the family settled with having Barclay live with their parents, he remembered her of Angus, and for her, she couldn’t lose Angus again.

Therefore, from the age of one year old, Barclay has stayed in the care of his Granny and Grandpa, in a rather large home, though quite eerie due to its remoteness and the following footsteps that ran after him when he ran down the hallways. With deers heads mounted on the wall, old muskets and swords hanging on the grand staircase.  As a five year old, he often had to ask his Grandpa’s assistance going up the staircase, often scaring him due to weird shadows the deers cast across the steps.

A large family, he was not without company, often spending days with his cousins that run the Inn not far away. It was between six years and seven that he first learned to fly. Though he was not very good, he managed to stick with it, according to his grandfather, the other one that he didn’t live with, his mother was a rather excellent flyer and enjoyed Quidditch. So he persevered and made sure he became the best flyer than he could be, it make his mother proud, her engagement ring sitting on a silver chain that hung around his neck. Left to Barclay in her Will.

A big influence in his life has been the legacy that his parents left behind, the way they unconditionally loved one another, the way his grandmother spoke of them, with their entwined loved and hearts, the way they were each others soulmate. That Angus was a gentleman, a man of beauty and  manners, a man he has only ever seen in photographs. To rise through the ranks, to aspire to achieve the good his grandmother insisted he did, a generous man full of charity. He has never wanted to be anything more.

House Request: Slytherin

Personality: Despite everything, Barclay tends to put on a front of happiness and cheekiness. However, he has a rather sorrow filled personality, he deals with his parents death daily as well as the feeling of not fitting in, something that he has felt before, but becomes more apparent as he settles into Hogwarts. But he still has a sense of drive, striving to be the best he can for his mother and father's sake, constantly reminded of these two brave aurors who were heavily involved in the war, which ultimately brought their demise.

How your character kept up with their studies: Barclay remained at Hogwarts until the end of his fourth year, when he finally discovered about the true nature of his parents death, he set out for the train to Hogwarts, fooling his grandparents into thinking he was going, but rather instead of getting on the Hogwarts Express, he remained in London. Betrayed, lied too; Barclay vowed to rule out his grandparents from his life, he had his inheritance money, he could live on his own. At first he stayed at a little Inn, using his halfblood status to his advantage, he would hide with muggles. He did not wish to return to Hogwarts, not yet, but he did not want to fall behind and therefore he would travel to the library to ensure, he would not forget his studies.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

It was cold. It was cold down here and he most of all wanted to get away from that dripping of water that seemed to follow him no matter how much he was trying to find his way back to the Great Hall. It may have been several weeks into the new school year, but Barclay was still to get used to the various places of the Castle. Here, he had got lost, wandering down the wrong corridor.

With various embellishments, he found it quite clear that this was the corridor of the dungeons, the home the silver snakes that hurried through the castle, scurrying to their lessons or to the hall for food. They were so… confident, they were so… it was odd, even people his age, they were so… arrogant? They were so boisterous that whenever one passed, he found himself somewhat hoping they’d not say anything to him.

He mainly just wanted to run away and find his way back up to the Hall. He wanted to get to safety. He wanted to get back to the warmth and the light of the castle, not down here in the dungeons, he could only picture what Aiden said to be the punishment for being up after curfew. How they hung people by the nails. He shook the thought from his head, shivering.

Then there was a voice, a call, a cry for someone called Emma… Birch. Who was Emma Birch? Either way, the voice echoed and he looked over his shoulder to see where it was coming from. Then back over his shoulder, his feet carrying him, hurrying himself forward. “Hello?” He called out… he hoped… perhaps prayed that there was not a response… he just wanted to leave.
