Application for Salem Institute

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Dawlish Ledgerwood

Birthday: August 7th

Hometown: Haimish Hollow, England

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two):
Primary 2 or 3 (I wrote the biography assuming third, but events can be easily compressed to happen in just one if necessary)

Biography:
Dawlish Ledgerwood was a bright and energetic young British boy with a rather obvious (though undiagnosed, given the time period) case of ADHD. He had a natural knack for invention, and a tendency to get absorbed in a good book, and not notice things going on around him. When he was sorted into Ravenclaw, he was the first Ledgerwood to do so in 200 years, almost all proceeding Ledgerwoods having been sorted into Hufflepuff, and were very proud of that fact. This caused a strain on his relationship with his parents, but for the most part, Dawlish ignored it and threw himself into life at Hogwarts.

Near the end of his first year, his mother died in childbirth (a child he suspected was supposed to become a "true" Ledgerwood Hufflepuff), which instead of bringing him and his father together, pushed them farther apart. Over the next year, Dawlish fell into a deep depression, pushing his friends away and further shutting himself away in a book, his studies, or his experiments. He also spent a rather unhealthy time talking with ghosts, and harbors a not-so-secret fascination with contacting the dead.  None of this served to make him any happier or alleviate his sadness.

When he returned home for Summer Break after his 2nd Year at Hogwarts, his father informed him that he was taking a well-paying and prestigious (if not entirely influential) job in the Swedish magical government, something to do with some boring law thing or another. Between that and "personal reasons you'll understand when you're older" (that Dawlish immediately assumed to be his being placed in the "wrong" house), he was sending Dawlish to the Salem Institute for Witches and Wizards in America, where he would spend his breaks with his great-Aunt and great-Uncle, a squib couple who lived in the area.

Given that this was already somewhat akin to the old tradition of sending all the criminals to Australia, and the current border laws, Dawlish recognized that his father was essentially dissolving the family - he promised he would still write by owl, but intimated that he would be selling the house off, and made no mention of personal visits, even though Dawlish was sure his father knew how to apparate.

Society Request:
Rook

Personality:
Dawlish was once a bright and energetic boy, naturally inquisitive and experimental, with a great tendency to explore, often where and when he wasn't strictly supposed to. After the death of his mother, however, he became sullen and withdrawn, losing some important friendships. The shock of his father's announcement about his future and the long lonely summer to think about it has put some self-evaluation into him, though. He realized how when he was happy-go-lucky he made some friends (true), and when he was withdrawn, he lost them (true), so he has decided that when he goes to Salem, he's going to put on a mask of, if not his original wild spontaneity and joie de vie, then at least a sense of general cheeriness, and just pretend that his life is dandy (probably not a good idea).

Appearance:
Dawlish has short brown hair and a vaguely elvin face. He's a little on the small size for his year, given his late summer birthday, and more than a few well-meaning relatives have jocularly told him to "Get your head out of that book and put some meat on those skinny bones of yours!", though he his honestly of rather average build in all respects, just a little shorter and a little skinnier than average, and a lot skinnier than his generally rotund extended family.

The only really distinguishing characteristic about him is a case of heterochromia, with his left eye being of a reddish hazel hue, and the right a grayish blue. On the whole, he is not a particularly remarkable-looking person, except for the fact that around his second year at Hogwarts, students started referring to him as "that kid with the weird eyes".

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Please reply to the Sample Roleplay below.

Dawlish had never been particularly fond of history, beyond a few intriguing biographies he had read, but large sweeping generalizations of large-scale events ticked off the academic in him, and meticulously detailed reports were either dreadfully boring, or, well, sad. And since he was being expected to do a history report on the American Civil War, the latter was much more likely. Dawlish was a generally upbeat guy, but he didn't like to dwell on sad things, and in his opinion, war was always sad, even though that put him at odds with many other people's current opinions on war.

On the bright side, it was a group project, and Dawlish LOVED group projects - they gave you people to hang out and chat with while still getting work done! Unfortunately, this student didn't really seem to be the chatty type. In fact, he hadn't even spoken a word to Dawlish the entire time, and the all-encompassing silence was filled with so much awkwardness that Dawlish was sure you could cut it with a well-placed Diffindo.

The other boy though - Samuel? Simon? Sampson? Something like that - didn't seem perturbed at all, and quietly, almost... sullenly, continued to leaf through large, beautiful tomes. Then, all of a sudden, he (Simon! That was it!) broke the silence.

"How about I write the essay and stuff? You can just put your name on it. Sound good?"

Dawlish was taken aback. "Um, would you really want to do that?" On the one hand, this sounded almost too good to be true, on the other, such things usually were, and he really didn't mind doing the report too much - in fact, he would probably even enjoy it if Simon would actually talk to him. Still, there was work in other classes he really needed to do, and would much rather do if this "group" project was going to continue to be just the two of them silently poring over depressing texts.

"Well, if you actually do, then sure, I guess. I guess it seems like it would be, I dunno, best for both of us? But, are you expecting anything in return?"

→ ABOUT YOU.

Previous Characters (if applicable):
First character on this site, but I'm adapting this character from one I used to use on a different Harry Potter RP site, before it disappeared into the void of the internet - basically continuing where things left off, but switching schools for plot reasons and also so I can personally justify why all his friends suddenly don't exist anymore.

How did you find us?:
On a whim, I was searching to see if there was any publicly posted reason why that site I used to use (PAD's Hogwarts) imploded, and on a Yahoo Answers, someone gave a vague answer but also a plug for this site. So, yeah.

Application for Salem Institute

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Dawlish Ledgerwood

Birthday: August 7th

Hometown: Haimish Hollow, England

Bloodline:
Pureblood, in that both his parents are magical, but his mother was a Muggleborn and his Father is a Halfblood.

Magical Strength (pick one):
Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two):
Primary 2 or 3 (I wrote the biography assuming third, but events can be easily compressed to happen in just one if necessary)

This caused a strain on his relationship with his parents, but for the most part, Dawlish ignored it and threw himself into life at Hogwarts.

A few months after arriving, however, a magical experiment gone awry imbued him with temporary complete control over cake and all cake-like substances, allowing him to completely bend cake to his will (which his dorm-mates later confirmed to have been a delusion - at most the magical blast pushed a single cake off a table onto the floor - everything else Dawlish remembered doing was a fevered magic-addled hallucination), and causing him to float a couple feet off the ground (this turned out to be unfortunately completely real, and not at all temporary [special powers application permitting - basically he hovers a foot or two off the ground, it mostly just gets in his way, and he hasn't found any use for it except being able to reach higher books than most kids his age]). He failed to mention this to his parents, making Christmas Break very awkward indeed.

Near the end of his first year, his mother died in childbirth (a child he suspected was supposed to become a "true" Ledgerwood Hufflepuff), which instead of bringing him and his father together, pushed them farther apart.
