“Hear Ye! Here Ye--”

”Brooooklynnnn,” a squeaky voice interrupted from underneath her, ”you’ve been hogging the crow’s nest for aaaagees.”

“I said, hush, peasant!” Brooklyn slashed downwards at Lil’ Carlos with her wooden sword, a gift from her father for her eighth birthday. “I’m the captain here and I get to do what I want!”

”No, you don’t! You’re just being bossy!”

”Yeah, you fat meanie!”

The chorus of complaints washed over her like a wave of misplaced displeasure. The dumb brats were clearly too dumb to realize she was their rightful leader. Who else would steer their ship to land? Benny? The third-grader couldn’t even steer his own feet properly, always knocking into stuff and blubbering apologies; their ship wouldn’t make it a day under his command.

“Silence!” She shrieked it. She was good at that, being loud and such.

Once she was sure all 4 pairs of eyes were focused on her, she continued: “How dare you guys betray me like this?! I’ve been your leader since the beginning! And I’ve been there for all of you!”

The girl whirled suddenly, swinging one leg over the side of the crow’s nest, and jumped down to the sand below. She charged at Carlito Munoz, or Lil' Carlos as they fondly called him, and swung her sword at him, the tip of the polished plastic stopping an inch before his nose. The boy squeaked.

“Remember when those fifth graders hung you by your undies on the first day of school? Who ruined her new skirt trying to get you down?”

Without letting him reply, her elbow drew in and jut out again as she jabbed him in the stomach. She turned to her right then, taking two lunging steps, and slashed at the backs of Danny’s legs. His twin, Benny, scurried beneath the ship’s dusty underbelly in the wake of her attack.

“And you two! When your parents were fighting a few weeks ago who snuck you into her home to sleep over, like, every night?!”

Danny had fallen to his knees dramatically, throwing one arm over his eyes as he crumpled to the sand. She took that as his submission and placed a steady foot on his back, hands balled triumphantly on her hips. Benny’s round face peeked out from beneath the ship nervously, eyes darting to his brother’s fallen form.

His voice was torn as he called out, torn between defending himself and his family’s pride and the threat of the girl’s mighty sword. ”Y-you, of course. Even though we didn’t nee—“

"AND YOU." Brooklyn had moved onto her final victim before he could finish. The latest newcomer to the group and a year older than all of them, José was arguably the greatest threat to Brooklyn’s reign because of his stature and mastery of the Multiplication Table. (She struggled with her 8’s occasionally.)

"Mister Josie—" The other boys snickered under their breaths at her purposeful blunder, “—I mean, José. What do you have to say for yourself?”

Unsurprisingly, he’d been the only one to not complain about her attitude. José was smart like that. He knew to bide his time, lie in wait like a snake, and strike if and only if the moment was right. He was their lead coordinator on pranks after all, while Brooklyn was always the one to carry them out.

”I say…” The boy looked over her shoulder at the other three, their subdued forms sprawled around the ship’s structure in various poses of defeat. The five of them knew how to make quite the scene. A knowing expression suddenly crossed the boy’s face and Brooklyn froze. She knew that expression well. It spoke of betrayal and comeuppance, of tides turning and an overthrowing in her near future. She sprang into action a moment too late.

”I say GET HER!”

The first water balloon hit her from behind, coating the back of her head and shirt in a cool liquid. She ducked in time to avoid the next two, but when José reached into his back pocket in front of her, she knew she was really in for it.

Brooklyn lashed out with her sword over and over again, and soon the attack turned into an all-out brawl.

Sometime later, the five of them lay soaked and worn out side-by-side in the sand. They watched as the sun dipped low into the horizon, knowing their time together was coming to an end. Carlos was the first to leave. Before he did, he turned towards Brooklyn with one last attempt: ”Hey, do you think I can be captain tomorrow?”

“Of course not.”

Unperturbed by her attitude, he shrugged, ”…worth a shot.”

The twins were the next to go, quickly followed by José.

Brooklyn, the last to leave as always, waited long after the boys were out of sight before gathering up her sword and meandering home.

How your character kept up with their studies: She was still at Hogwarts ICly. Ideally, she would've kept up with her studies by going to class and excelling on exams, but in reality....

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Gardens as luxurious as the Castle's were a rarity where she was from. Prior to coming to Hogwarts, she'd never paid much mind to the creatures (—because, according to her Herbology Professor, plants had a mind of their own and therefore that made them living beings—) that lined her city's streets. They were normally dirty and mangled, having been trampled underfoot by the ever-present crowd of city-dwellers. She used to think they were ugly.

But as she sat with her back to the outer hedge that lined the garden, her toes buried within the rows of pink petunias, Brooklyn relaxed into herself with a sigh. The flowers weren't so bad when she could do this. She didn't like caring for them much, finding their stems a little too fragile for her brusque touch and their petals dramatic in the way that they withered away with a mere look.

She liked them when all she had to do was lie there...

"....where are you?"

...and rest.

(Luckily, the first wave of snot had just missed her head because, for as beautiful as it was, the garden would've turned into a massive mud-pile with the way she was itching to pummel the boy.)

"Oh! Oh." He shocked her in his abrasiveness and complete disregard for their peaceful surroundings.

(Nevermind that not a minute prior she'd been imagining dragging him rear-first through the pretty little daffodils to her left.)

"It's not polite, huh?! Well, it's not polite to stand there with all that...that...stuff on your face!"

She was flustered, she'd admit it, but her anger was justified. As was her disgust. Brooklyn absolutely hated anything having to do with boogers.
