Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Alec Winchell Maurice

Birthday: Dec. 14 1946 (or 1945)

Hometown: Portmeirion, Gwynedd, Wales

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one): Charms

Year (pick two): First or Second

Biography: Alec was born to a pureblood father and a halfblood mother in  Portmeirion, Gwynedd, Wales. Surrounded by color and castle-like buildings, he has grown up in a near-fantasy. His parents were both loving and always got him anything he needed as quickly as possible. Nestled into a nearby mountain was a small shop. It held various trinkets, magical and non-magical, but all beautiful in their own way. Antique globes, wristwatches, and china sets were among the muggle highlights. The magical ones included potions and elixirs that could make your hair melt or your fingers grow as long as your legs. There were diaries that could only be opened by one voice and pianoes that could play themselves.

The common ground between all of these things? They were left behind by someone, someplace, or something. Alec's parents repaired them and added their own enchantments and the like, and they were as good as new, ready to be purchased for more than their original price.

The Maurice Shoppe for Gadgets and Gizmos was well known for its architecture and its charm, much like the rest of Portmeirion. It was carved into a hollow hill and it seemed to have an endless supply of shelves and space. The shop was so heavily stocked at all times, one would come in "just for a look" or for a single item, and walk out with dozens. That was the trick of it all. There was more in that store than one would ever have a use for.

His mother, Sabelia, was a Gryffindor. She was always pushing limits - that of herself, her friends, and of authority. She didn't like rules and preferred learning by discovery than lectures in a classroom. She barely scooted by on her OWLS in History of Magic and Astronomy, but aced those in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, and the like.

His father, Espen, was a Ravenclaw. As a student, he always had his head in the clouds, dreaming up new inventions. He was always an innovator and always a dreamer. Abstract subjects appealed to him because they left some things open to interpretation. His favorite classes were Divination and Ancient Runes.

On Alec's eighth birthday, he and his parents stumbled into the shop at 6:00 A.M. sharp, as per the usual. He was homeschooled, so he didn't need to worry about homework. His parents went off to get something, and a dreidel cut from a diamond fell from the top shelf. It was about as wide as a dime, but Alec noticed it out of his peripheral vision and rushed to catch it. He didn't know how his parents had come across it, but he did know diamonds were expensive. He reached out his hands to grab it... and he missed. But not completely, for while he didn't catch the dreidel, he did manage to levitate it a few centimeters above the ground before it fell, not cracking one bit. His parents rushed out, congratulating him. They had planned the whole heist. They had been planning these little mishaps ever since he turned three without him knowing, hoping to help Alec along in his magical discovery.

He got his Hogwarts letter just three years later. Was it the best birthday present he'd ever gotten? Of course! He was jumping for joy, quite literally, when he found out he was going to the same school his parents had gone to.

Now, he boards the Hogwarts express, ready to take on his first/second year. Adventure awaits, and he is eager to live life on the edge of his seat!

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: N/A

Personality: Alec's parents played a large role in his personality. He is imaginative, creative, and adventurous. He takes risks for the sake of it and loves all things new! He doesn't follow rules for two main reasons: he doesn't like order and prefers to run free, and his mind is often wandering when rules are being explained. He can never keep his mind straight with adults jabbering on and on! In addition, he likes causing a bit of mischief every now and then. He is generally cheery unless you are rude to him. One of his biggest pet peeves is people telling him what to do. Alec loves all things art and also likes playing sports.

Appearance: Alec has a lot of thick, light brown hair. He has brown eyes and pale skin. He doesn't slouch, but his posture isn't perfect, either. He is very short currently but will end up only a bit under average later on. Thanks to his abundance of athletic ability, he is relatively muscular, but this won't be apparent for a couple of years. Alec is always wearing a smile. He has a skinny build, currently.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Alec sat in the dark, alone.

The stone tickled him from beneath, threatening to glaze his skin with ice. He was in a perfect criss-cross apple sauce position, just like they had taught him back home. Not that he had ever sat all tidily before, but it was the proper seating arrangement for meditation. Everyone in his books had sat like it, and Alec had looked at the pictures, not the words.

Words were boring.

Unnecessary.

Alec took a deep breath in on an open "a" vowel, and let it out. He repeated, counting one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. It was relaxing, but he'd been expecting something... more. Alec had expected to fall asleep right then and there, or to block out the sounds of various critters wandering about the dungeons. He began to pat his knee on the stone floors that threatened to freeze him to an icicle, reminiscent of the drip-drop, drip-drop, pitter-patter, pitter-patter of rain.

And that's when the girl spoke.

He wasn't sure how long she'd been there, or where she was exactly. After keeping his eyes closed for so long, it was hard to see. He stood up, the world still black as night.

"Hello," he spat. It wasn't his intention; he was simply echoing the feeling of the environment around him. He paused, letting the word linger in the air for a moment, before continuing, "Apologies. That wasn't the tone of voice I wanted to use. And no, I haven't heard of an Emma Birch here. It sounds like a fake alias or something to me. I'm Alec, though. What about you?"

Social interaction. Not something he'd mastered, but hopefully his words hadn't come out too jaggedly.

Head of Ravenclaw
do you remember the twenty-first night of september?
love was changing the minds of pretenders while chasing the clouds away
our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing
as we danced in the night, remember how the stars stole the night away
