Divination / Transfiguration / Charms / Conjuring & Summoning

Biography:
March 31, 1955

The bell above the door of Bryce & Co. Bakery rang, bright and true, and Marcella’s head dipped through the kitchen doorway to watch a head of curly blond hair dip inside the building. Her smile stretched wide and, quickly wiping her hands on a towel and tossing it aside, the newly-turned eleven year old ran from the back room. Darting around the counter, Marcy jumped and wrap her arms around her brother’s middle.

“Eugene! It came this morning! The letter!”

Eugene laughed, one arm curling over her shoulder in half a hug, his other large hand clapping down atop her head to rustle the blonde crown of her hair. Marcy pulled back with a wrinkled nose and an offendedly sharp, “Hey!”

“Did you doubt you’d get it, kiddo?”

“No! Well-- maybe,” she pulled back, looking up at Eugene as she adjusted and smoothed down her ponytail, “Charlie Ruthers said on the playground that even though both his grandparents are purebloods, his uncle was born a squib, and that halfies like us are more likely to--”

“Charlie Ruthers still picks his nose, I wouldn’t put much stock in him,” her brother winked and Marcy giggled, “Besides, he was wrong! You got your letter!”

“I did!” Marcy beamed, busying herself with pulling a folded parchment from the front pocket of her flour stained apron, presenting it forward with a frantic shake. Eugene took it, eyeing the folds and wondering just how many times his sister had gone over it before he’d arrived.

Meanwhile, Marcella’s voice raced on.

“--Mum thinks we have some of your old supplies that should be good still, like the cauldron, and maybe some of the books if new editions aren’t needed, since you took such good care of your things. But I’ll need new robes and quills, a broom, and things. Oh! And a wand, of course. You’ll come with me for that, right? I want to go to Rid.”

“Of course,” Eugene smiled down at her, the slight pink tint to his cheeks not going unnoticed by Marcy who filed that reaction away for later, “I’m sure he will be happy to see you.”

“Us,” she corrected, “Also I want all the advice you can give me for how to succeed at Hogwarts--”

“I’m probably the last person you want for that,” Eugene muttered, his hand rubbing over his chin before resting on the back of his neck, but Marcella didn’t seem to notice.

“--I need to know everything. Who are the best professors? How many kids can I expect to be there? Will I be cool right away, or do I need to work at it? You know what, scratch that last one, it doesn’t matter. I heard there is a giant sea monster in the lake, is that true?!”

“H-Hey!” Eugene interrupted, desperately, “How about I give you your birthday present, huh?”

Summer, 1959

“Eugene, what was your fifth year like?”

Marcy watched her brother’s form, both of them out in the yard of the daycare that he owned, the sun in the sky dipping and making the shadows long while the colors of it cut across pink and orange. They were picking up the toys that had been brought out for recess, scattered and forgotten by the children before their parents had all flocked to pick them up.

But at her question Eugene froze mid action, fingers stretched out and hovering over a stuffed bear.

Marcella’s head cocked to the side, “Eugene?”

“Ahh—” He jerked back into motion, scooping the toy up and turning back to face her, bear in both hands and held up to his chest. He looked nervous. He got that way some times when she prodded with too many personal questions, but Marcy had thought this would have been a safe one, one that had been on her mind since he had picked her up from the train. “It wasn’t, uhh... Well, let’s just say it wasn’t my favorite year.”

“Oh,” Marcy frowned, bit her lip. So far her Hogwarts experience had been, well, fine... But everyone else seemed to have something going on, some exciting new prospect, or a bright new love interest, or shooting to the top of their class. Meanwhile she had just been... stagnant.

“B- But!” Eugene was quick to hop forward, smile reforming bright and comforting like he was always so good at. Marcy’s own smile twitched, but her eyes flicked down to the grass her sandals pressed into. Eugene went on, “I made a lot of dumb mistakes that I know you’re way too smart to make. I’m sure you’ll have a great year, and you’ll do great things.”

“You think so?” Marcy sighed, her green eyes seeking out the blue. It was all she really wanted.

“I know so,” Eugene held out the bear to bop it against the blonde crown of her head, and Marcy’s nose wrinkled as she swatted harmlessly at it, “Word on the street from Charlie Ruthers’ little brother is that he still has that crush on you!”

“Ew! Eugene!”

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality:
A few quirks ring strongly with Marcella. The most surprising for her age being her ambitious drive, a trait plucked from the many bakers and business owners in her life. Growing up in Bryce & Co, Helen instilled in her daughter a sense of pride in hardwork, in building things from the ground up, in knowing how to do things yourself. Marcella loves being busy and working with her hands, helping out, reaching toward the next big thing. And if that means all eyes are on her, she doesn’t mind that at all.

Another constant is her attitude, nearly always upbeat. Sure an occasional swing of her mood could take her stubbornly, obstinately, confrontationally; she is human, after all, and a hot headed temper does lurk under the surface. But on the general, Marcella is a glass half-full kind of girl. There is always an upside, a light in the darkness, a silver lining. She can find it in nearly anything, and is more the generous with helping others find that too.

And she isn’t afraid to get down and dirty, never turning down from a little friendly competition or standing up to the occasional bully picking on her friends. She would never pick a fight herself, but if someone pushes her or a loved one, she won’t hesitate to push back.

But there is a less well-known side to her, too, one she is almost too busy and young to pay too much attention to. It’s there on her more quiet days, wistfully resting her chin on her hand as she watches the couples that come into their shop on dates, cutely picking out treats to eat together, laughing over them, holding hands over the tabletops afterwards. It’s there when she watches her brother shyly smile at boys who smile back at him, when he thinks she’s not looking. It’s there when she wonders who her father might be, making up elaborate stories in her head about him when no one will be direct with their answers. It’s there more sadly when her mother tiredly trudges back up the stairs to their little apartment, and collapses in bed, alone. Marcella loves love, loves romance, and she can’t wait for the day that she finds it for herself.

Appearance:
Marcella walks a fine line between family traits. Outwardly she is undeniably and definitely a Bryce, but if you know where to look, the strong traits of a Ross stand out glaringly. Her hair is sleek and sunny blonde, the locks wavier than her mother’s yet not nearly as curly as her brother’s. She shares their same infectious smile, wide and toothy, lighting up her entire face. But her eyes aren’t the same shade of blue, they’re green, and the shape of the lid around them more narrowed. The shape of her face, too, sits at slightly different angles, though Helen will insist the two of them at least share the same nose.

She is slightly above average height for her age, thin, with long limbs no longer terribly awkward like they were in her childhood. Being of middle-class wealth, her clothes aren’t the most expensive but they’re nice, kept well-- she likes to look nice, and will put a little thought into her day to day outfits before heading out. That doesn’t mean, however, that she won’t get dirty when she has to. She’ll still climb a tree in a dress, or run through a mud puddle in her good shoes, or push up the sleeves of her new sweater to roll out some dough.

How your character kept up with their studies: Marcella has been at Hogwarts since her first year, diligently pushing through her studies the best she can. Focus was never her closest friend, however, and she can sometimes be caught with her head in the clouds or being distracted by the many distractions Hogwarts has to offer, and it is reflecting in her grades— just average. It’s not exactly where she would like to be sitting at, and she is determined now more than ever to finally hit her up-swing.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Option 2:
“You've got a little something, still. Just there--" Marcy stood not far off, hip cocked and nose wrinkled up in slight disgust, as she pointed to the spot on her own face that she stared at on the older boy's that still had snot smeared across. Unaffected by his-- pun intended-- snotty attitude, she continued, "You might be allergic, you know. You might want to avoid this area."

And though she might have been a little grossed out, her words weren't sarcastic, but meaningful. If it had been anyone else who had caught him out here with a head and an arm full of snot, they might not have been so nice.

"Was that you yelling about a rat, by the way?" she asked next, her face relaxing as she pointed her thumb over her shoulder, "I saw one run across back there a bit ago. I could show you, if--?"

Marcy's sentence trailed off, looking expectantly between the boy and the area she had just taken a stroll through.
