Biography:
Although Kadence's family was still whole, it was fragile. Her mother, a reporter for the Daily Prophet, was home less and less as the years passed. When she was home, tension was always high. Anxious for a good story, Laura Brannen was never exactly attentive over the short periods she resided with her husband and daughter.
Andrew Brannen, Kadence's father, was quite the opposite. A Ravenclaw, transfiguration was his passion. He spent his life researching and writing about it, even contributing to a textbook or two. But so much as he loved magic, he did not care much for the wizarding world.
On her mother's insistence, (and the fact that Andrew didn't care much about anything Kadence did) she was sent to muggle school to experience their side of schooling. Laura was muggleborn, and was sure that no matter what, it was best for Kadence to not be isolated from the muggle world even if it meant dreadful bullying and her classmates witnessing several unexplainable incidents.
Her first year at Hogwarts was quiet uneventful.

Although through the gardens was not the most direct route to the castle, Kadence decided it was worth a little extra time to get some quiet time alone before heading back to the common room. It was rare anymore for her to find much time absolutely alone, and although she did like enjoying more classes and activities, it was a relief to have at least a small amount of time to just draw or daydream.
However, when she reached the gardens she found it was neither quiet nor solitary. There was a boy running around, sneezing, shouting something about Merlin, and generally acting like a fool.
Had he said something about a rat? Kadence caught a glimpse of scampering in a path of flowers. "Your rat? Escaped?" she asked, fumbling for words. Without waiting for an answer, she dove into the flowers, attempting to grab the rat.
