Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name:
Emma Grace Birch

Birthday:
5 August, 1928

Hometown:
Wales

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two):
Seventh, Sixth

Biography:
The Birch family is a wealthy English family.  Their house seat is currently located in Wales.  The home originally belonged to the Mortenmar family line, but since Elzabeth is the last of the Mortenmar line, the home became the family seat for the Birch family line when Arthur Sylvestor Birch married Elzabeth Mortenmar.

Together, Arthur and Elzabeth welcomed a son; Arthur Sylvestor Birch II.  Arthur Sylvestor Birch, Sr. also fathered two more sons; Sylvestor Birch and Theodore Birch; when he cheated on Elzabeth with another woman.  The other woman died, and Elzabeth agreed to raise Arthur, Sr’s two other children as her own; under the understanding that the family inheritance (specifically from the Mortenmar line) could never go to the younger sons, Sylvetor and Theodore.

When the children got older, Arthur Birth II fathered a child with Anne O’Murray, the daughter of a muggleborn.  When Arthur wouldn’t marry her, Anne seduced his brother Sylvestor and married him.

Theodore wasn’t like his brothers.  Fathering a child with a daughter of a muggleborn was bad enough, but marrying a muggleborn, how absurd!  Blood purity was important, and the Birch family line couldn’t be tainted by those who were unpure.  That was why he marrying Claudia; she was a pureblood.

There was only one problem.  Regardless of the fact that he didn’t tarnish the family name, he still couldn’t become the heir of the family inheritance.  That was reserved for Arthur II.  When he passed away, his daughter, Elizabeth, became the heir.

But that wasn’t fair; she wasn’t a pureblood!  How dare the family allow this to happen!  The day his half-brother died and a half-blood became the heir to the family inheritance was the day that something snapped inside of Theodore making him certifiably insane.

One thing was for sure though; his children with Claudia would be brought up the right way.  They would be brought up knowing that blood purity was more important than anything else in the wizarding world.  He swore to his children that if they ever even thought of ruining his stem of the family line with anyone who was less than pure, they would be wipe off the family tree forever.  In all his craziness, the kids weren’t sure if he would do that by disowning them, or something worse; though they were sure that he wouldn’t really do anything to harm them.

That was why Alexander Birch married Seren Prothero.  She had gone to Hogwarts with him where they were both students of the Slytherin house.  The Prothero’s were a well-known pureblood family in the wizarding world.  Alexander looked up to his father, which is why he became a member of the Order and an Auror for the Ministry of Magic after his Hogwarts graduation in 1961.  Seren is also a member of the Order and also works for the Ministry as an Obliviator.

In 1962, Alexander and Seren welcomed their first child; a son they named Theodore Vincent Birch.

On August 5, 1966, they welcomed their second and last child, Emma Grace Birch.

Emma’s youngest memory is attending the funeral of her grandfather, Theodore.  At such a young age, Emma could not comprehend what was going on, she just knew that her daddy was very, very sad.

That day, Alexander made a vow to his father that his children would be raised the same way that he was raised.  Vincent and Emma would be raised believing strongly in the notion of blood purity and believing that pureblood wizards were superior to all others.

Emma read and re-read the letter in her hand.  This was the day she had waited for her entire life, the day that her Hogwarts letter would arrive.  However, it did not bear the signature that she had hoped.  Fingers ran across the spot that should have read, “Sincerely, Professor Elizabeth Birch-Hurst.”

She couldn’t go to Hogwarts.

“Mum, please let me go to another Wizarding School!” She begged for what seemed to be the thousandth time.  I can’t show my face at Hogwarts.  They know who I am, who my family is, and most of all what happened to Elizabeth.”

Durmstang.  Beauxbatons.  Salem.  It didn’t matter … she just couldn’t go to Hogwarts.

As far as Emma was concerned, Elizabeth was innocent; it didn’t matter what the Wizengamot had charged her for.  In her eyes, the charges brought forth by the Wizarding Alliance were all just bogus attempts of removing her from her position inside the castle.

And it had worked.

But now to an entire student body, the Birch surname was tarnished forever.  Emma wasn’t ready to face the ridicule that would ensue from most, if not all, of the students.  She knew that her cousin wasn’t well liked by most students, but those in a prominent, authoritative position rarely were.

After spending a year in France, the demise of the school as well as the death of her mother brought her back to England.  Despite the retribution she expects to receive from the other students, Emma hopes to enroll at Hogwarts in the fall.

She is currently an orphan, as she is unsure of the whereabouts of her father and brother.

Appearance:

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Exhausted, Emma plopped down on the bench. In fact, she was so tired that she hadn't even realized that she had sat down at the Quidditch Champions' table.

"What are you doing here Emma? You were on the losing team, remember?"

Emma picked up her head off the table. It had been a hard fought game, and they were right... this year she had been on the losing end. Although her muscles ached with pain, she pushed herself up from the table. However, instead of making her way to her own table, she made a grand exit through the Great Hall's doors.

(Who wanted to celebrate losing anyhow?)

A few steps down the hall and there was yelling. Loud yelling. She hadn't realized she had a headache until now. Was ... was he yelling at her?

"Why don't you just take a picture!"

It was him.

It was a good thing for the second year that she wanted to scream from the pain. It would have taken more strength than she could muster to strangle the boy that had likely cost them the game.

"You're not worth the wasted film," she seethed.

The dining hall was a loud, calamitous thing. Students sat scattered through the vast room, speaking various languages, laughing, and simply having a gay old time. A group of students towards the front of the hall sat huddled over a pile of sheet music. Black notes melted on to the off white parchment, splaying out a secret language, only readable to those who carried the gift. Another group sat watching a tall, thin upperclassman parading around her new ballet point shoes in awe. There seemed to be a group in the hall for everyone.

Everyone except Hilary, that is.

Poor Hilary stood soaking in the scene before her with a slight grimace on her face. Before coming to Beauxbatons, she had been overjoyed to begin studying magic, but now as she waded through her third week at the school, she felt lost in a sea of strangers. It wasn't that she was shy, no. Indeed, she even tried to reach out to some students. It was more that everyone seemed to already have their own clique, and Hilary felt so very unwelcome in all of them.

On her plate, she fidgeted with an assortment of vegetables and a delicate pork chop. That was the nice thing about Beauxbatons. Despite the many cold-shouldered students, the food was still incredible.

With a hefty sigh, Hilary strode into the dining hall. As she did, she let her mind wander to what life at the academy might be were she royalty. The students would bow at her feet! And of course she would only ever don the most elegant of robes, decorated in sequins, rhinestones, and laced with frills. All of the girls at the school would fawn over the level of grace she exhibited. Hilary would make wonderful royalty, yes that was certain.

Though, lost in her fantasy, Hilary failed to notice the leather bag lying at the center of the walkway. Failing to notice the bag in her path, naturally caused her to trip, spilling the contents of her plate all over the student sitting just beside the bag.

"Oh! I'm so sorry!"

Emma sat at the far end of the table where she and her friends usually sat, excluded from the rest of the students.  The lunch room was always so loud, some days Emma wished they just wouldn’t come to lunch at all.

One of her friends had dropped her bag to the ground and ran off to gossip with one of the girls from another communaté.  Emma had seen the girl in classes, but seeing as she was a half-blood, Emma hadn’t done much in the way of getting to know the girl; not even her name.  Even still, Emma question her friend’s loyalty to their group for associating with anyone that wasn’t a pureblood.

Emma turned back around, and as she did she spotted Hilary.  The girl wasn’t a pureblood, but Emma knew that she wished she was.  Hilary went out of her way to try and get Emma and the rest of her gang to invite her in as a member of their clique, but as if that would ever happen!

As she approached, Emma covered her face with her hand hoping that Hilary would just keep on walking.  Moments later, Emma found herself covered in various food remains.

And apology escaped the girl’s lips, but not quicker than Emma could stand up to face the girl.  She was taller than Emma by more than a very inches, but that didn’t stop the outpour of name-calling and vile remarks that began to escape Emma’s mouth.

“Give me one good reason I shouldn’t hex you right here, right now.”

ROLEPLAY
Reply as your character to the following:

It was impossible for Dianne to stay out of trouble. It wasn't that she was looking for trouble, it's just that trouble always managed to find her. Today she wished she could find something equally familiar but more comforting.

The five-year old girl hugged her puffskein closer to her and brushed her face in its soft fur for comfort. She had named him herself and he was always her special pet. No she was certain she had never gone down this side street before. Her anxiety increased every second as darkness fell as she walked down the road. A loud noise came to her left and she buried her face in her pet's fur completely. The scared girl bolted the opposite way slamming the both of them into the wall of the nearest building. Tottering back a few steps she found a door a few feet to her right and ran to open it. What light there was inside spilled out into the darkness and she spilled into the room.

Once in, she was caught between the impulse to curl her cloak up more tightly around her and loosen her grip on it. She wasn't alone anymore but she was now among strangers instead, which was nearly as terrifying. Her puffskein had recovered from the shock of the wall and now was purring contentedly as the girl hugged it, causing a mildly calming effect on the girl. Gathering her courage, she marched up to the nearest person, pulled on the nearest clothing hem and blurted out in a loud voice:

"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She paused to draw a breath in her nearly never-ending sentence, "He misses my and his mommy."

To explain the scared girl held up the custard-colored puffskein. Sambundeakin the puffskein, however simply purred as if nothing on earth was wrong in the world.

Roleplay Response:
It was a Saturday afternoon, so that could only mean one thing; Emma and her father could be found at the local restaurant having lunch.  Emma enjoyed the weekly afternoon lunches with her father; it was just time for them, which is why Emma was such a “daddy’s girl.”

Emma had excused herself to go to the restroom.  She was washing her hands when she felt a tug on her sleeve.

“What do you want?”  The tone in Emma’s voice wasn’t inviting.

That’s when Emma saw the girl, who wasn’t much younger than she was, holding a puffskein.

“And this is a restaurant, no pets allowed.”

Emma half-listened as the girl whined about how much her animal missed her mommy.  Even Emma could she through the façade, as the animal looked as content as could be.

Part of Emma wanted to tell the girl that her mother purposely left her alone; that she didn’t want her anymore.  The better half of Emma decided to help the girl.  Emma grabbed her – not gently – by the arm and dragged her out of the bathroom.

Once they reached the center of the restaurant, Emma pulled out a chair from one of the tables and climbed up on it.

“Hey!” Emma announced to the restaurant patron.  “Did anyone lose a whiny little girl?”

Emma waited for a response.
