Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Coraline Blythe was rebellious from the start.

Born April 12, 1852, to Augustus and Callidora Blythe, she was supposed to be a boy. When she went to Hogwarts in 1863, she was supposed to be a Slytherin, not a Gryffindor. And when she graduated in 1870, she was supposed to settle down with whichever man her father picked for her and get down to the business of making grandchildren, preferably male ones.

She didn’t, of course.

Instead she talked her way into Auror training. Being the uncommon breed of a female auror got her sent to Europe to run covert missions for the British Ministry of Magic. It was like a dream come true. Europe was so different from the stodgy British wizarding society. She loved it and loved being out on her own.

It didn’t last long. Her family’s tolerance for her independent streak was extremely short-lived and she was called home almost immediately under threat of disinheritance.  She was very tempted to ignore them and face the consequences, but she was pretty sure she would also find herself mysteriously fired by the Ministry, too. She did not like her family or care too much about the money, but she had to face the facts that she was not exactly equipped to make her way on her own.

So back to Cornwall she went, where her family had secured a suitable husband for her, who unsurprisingly turned out to be her cousin Lysander Thatcher. The Thatcher family held lands nearby and had long been intermarrying with the Blythes. She had no love for them either, but he wasn’t completely horrible and wasn’t hard on the eyes either.

Once she was married, kids weren’t far behind. She wasn’t exactly the most maternal woman ever, but she tried to be a good mother and found good nurses to care for the children. She kept busy doing background work for her husband and father in their various enterprises. She was good with numbers and a good judge of personality, so her father was glad to have her around. She also spent a good deal of time doing the charity and entertaining work that was expected of her.

She and Lysander had 5 kids over a span of 13 years. Two boys first, Lucian and Felix, much to her family’s delight. Then girls—Beatrix in 1882 and the twins, Euphemia and Cordelia, in 1886. She tried to raise them the best she could, but Coraline had never really wanted children. She loved them, of course, but she just didn’t know what to do with kids. She always made sure that she had the last say on which nurses, governess, and tutors they hired, but she was dismayed to see her children growing more and more like her husband and family. The boys were cold and calculating, downright cruel at times. Lysander was so hard on them, and she came to despise her husband more and more as her children aged.

Her father died in 1892 and left the entire Blythe fortune and estate to her younger brother, Delphinus. She had spent all her adult life so far helping him build his businesses, while Delphinus had been off in France doing Merlin knew what, but because she was a girl, everything went to him.

In 1896, her oldest son Lucian married the girl he had been seeing at Hogwarts, the daughter of two squibs, in a fit of defiance. Coraline couldn’t have been more pleased. Charlotte was sweet and caring, everything Coraline wished her daughters could have been. Things were rough for the girl in their family, but Coraline tried to be as kind as she could and Charlotte was nothing but gracious.

They had six girls in a row. The girls were wonderful, so sweet and playful and Coraline enjoyed being a grandmother. Much less pressure than being a mother had been. She wished so much that Charlotte would have a son, but it wasn’t to be. She saw the strain and anger it caused in their marriage and was very angry, but not surprised, when Lucian left Charlotte shortly after the birth of their sixth daughter.

Lysander was not in the least bit upset. He made some comments about the unsuitability of weak bloodlines and welcomed Lucian’s new wife Elodie with open arms. Charlotte and her daughters were thrown off the Thatcher estate and Coraline could do nothing about it.

Lysander died a few short years later and Coraline wasn’t even sure if she was sad about it.  Lucian inherited everything, of course, and kept his ex-wife and daughters from returning. Coraline was devastated to hear that the oldest girl, named after her, had found herself in a rather…unfortunate condition. Coraline put her foot down and insisted that they take her and the new baby in. Her son relented in the face of her constant arguments.

Her granddaughter Cora reminded her so much of herself, and she couldn’t help but blame her son’s absence from their family for the girl’s troubles. She knew Charlotte was sick and they were all being forced to live with some muggle relations, where the girls ran wild. Being a parent to a baby again was exhausting. She wasn’t getting any younger and hadn’t been very good at it in the first place. The girl, Lydia, was headstrong and defiant from the start, just like her mother and grandmother. Coraline tried to raise her as best she could.

Lucian died in a freak accident in 1923 and left her a significant portion of the family’s assets. She now finally had some control over the family. She had reached the age where no one was inclined to argue with her whims, and the rest of her children were married and busy with their own families.

Her other son, Felix, was killed in a duel in 1925. Two months later, her younger brother Delphinus and many other family members (including all his sons) were killed in what was ruled an “accidental” explosion. Now the defacto head of a large and growing family, Coraline spends most of her time attempting to influence her family members to do what she wants and hosting large parties for various charities and Ministry officials. As head of the family she serves on the Wizengamot, where she tries to balance her feelings with the wishes of other family members. In her old age and finally having the freedoms she wanted as a young woman, she is inclined to do only what she wants, but fears that upsetting too many members of the family at once might result in her having an unfortunate accident or suddenly being ruled “senile” by the court and shipped off somewhere.

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
At her age and position, Coraline Thatcher should not have to be out on the streets battling the pre-Christmas crowds and falling snow. Some errands just couldn’t be trusted to anyone else, though. She was an imposing site, gliding down Diagon Alley in a thick purple cloak and witch’s hat ornamented by a carefully arranged peacock feather plumes. The impervious charms on her pointed purple boots caused her to nearly glide over the snowy cobbles, and the crowd seemed to part in front of her.

Many of the shoppers were carrying parcels and she made a mental note to send Euphemia out later today for Christmas gifts for the children. Even with rationing, it wouldn’t do to have a Christmas celebration with no gifts. She would have to make sure Cordelia saved up enough ration coupons for the house elves’ traditional figgy pudding, as well. There was enough going on in the Ministry these days with the war on that she should not have to bother herself with frivolous details like this, but one did what one had to when others were incompetent.

Her thoughts thus occupied, she did not notice the shouts of the gentlemen coming toward her in the alley until a solid object collided with her back. She managed to keep her footing—just barely—which was fortunate, since it would not be seemly for her to be thrashing around on the paving stones like the gentleman who had crashed into her.

Plucking strands of tinsel off her cloak, she stared down at the sparkly disruption. With a flick of her wand, the rest of the tinsel decorating the man, the snow, and her cloak was whisked back into the box.

“What is the meaning of all this…sparkle?”

She looked distastefully at the box holding the offending substance.
