Biography:

Emma Yin was born in Shanghai when the plum blossoms bloomed during the winter of January. Her parents wished that their daughter would be a strong-willed person in the future so they gave her a Chinese name of the winter flower because this particular flower never feared the ice and snow, symbolized purity, bravery, and hope in the Chinese culture.

The Yin family had been doing all kinds of traditional businesses for generations, opening traditional Chinese medicine shops, dessert shops, silk shops, and more. Never had any financial problems, and they were able to live a comfortable life until Shanghai came under Communist control. At that time, Emma was only one-year-old. The Yin family didn’t want to live as Communists and preferred a carefree lifestyle. They were smart enough to sail away from their homeland sooner before the Communists could reach them.

Emma’s parents decided to immigrate to England and opened up a tea shop in the center of London. Knowing that most English people loved tea, their business flourished immediately. As for Emma, despite her birthplace was in China, she grew up in England instead but her parents never wanted their daughter to forget their Chinese tradition so they taught her Chinese and the culture.

Her father, Steven Yin was a stoic man who didn’t often show his emotion while her mother, Helena Yin was a kind woman who always had a gentle smile on her face. Emma looked up to her parents since she was very young, they often gave her valuable lessons, some guidance, and read historical stories to her almost every night before bedtime. Sometimes, her father would teach her all kinds of tea leaves and her mother would teach her how to bake Chinese desserts. During the weekends, Emma would volunteer to help out in their family tea shop. Her parents were proud of how motivated and diligent their daughter had become throughout the years. Emma later had two younger brothers, both were twins and loved to prank their elder sister. Even though Emma’s life in England was good and peaceful. However, there was one incident that completely changed everything.

When Emma was eight years old, she was on her way home from school as usual. Her younger brothers decided to prank her by pouring a bucket of water on her from above. One of the brothers was bold enough to climb on the brick roof with a bucket filled with water but due to the weight caused by a roof tile, he stepped on loosen and slipped, immediately losing his balance. Hearing a sudden cry of panic, Emma looked up and saw her younger brother was about to fall from a roof. It wasn’t too high but the floor was made of hardened stone that could still potentially injure her brother from the fall. Out of pure instinct, she ran towards her brother trying to catch him and in that exact moment, it was as if the time had stopped in front of her when she watched her brother’s entire body suddenly stop in mid-air and slowly levitated back on to the ground without getting hurt. Emma had no idea what just happened but she was relieved that her brother was unharmed and got saved by this “miracle”. After the incident, she scolded her younger brothers for doing such a dangerous prank and she promised she wouldn’t tell their parents under one condition that they would not be so reckless again.

Emma never knew that she was the cause of that “miracle” until a mysterious person visited their tea shop on her 11th birthday, handing her a letter with a red seal stamp that had a Hogwarts emblem printed on it.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Slytherin

Personality:

Emma isn’t stoic like her father and she is definitely not gentle like her mother. She is a bit of a tomboy who always wants to prove herself how capable she really is. Being the eldest sibling in the family, she thinks it’s her duty to protect her younger siblings and needs to be mature than any other kids her age. Although having two young siblings who are troublemakers and love doing pranks seem like a good practice for her to learn how to deal with conflicts and be resilient. Emma was taught from a very young age that if anyone wants to achieve something they must work hard to get it. That’s pretty much the reason why she’s always diligent. She also often likes challenges just to see her own limits and to understand what she can change to better herself to be better.

When people meet Emma for the first time, she will only give them a polite nod and stays quiet most of the time. It’s not that she dislikes socializing with people, it’s just her habit of staying vigilant towards strangers at first and observing them for a brief while before speaking to them. And when facing discrimination, she will use sarcasm to counter it as a way to show how it doesn’t affect her but deep down it can hurt her feelings but she would rather not show her weakness in front of people which can be stressful for her sometimes.

Appearance:

Emma is Chinese so she has the typical Asian feature with slightly tan skin and dark brown eyes. She has long black hair, braids in two lower pigtails. She is of average height (144 cm), has a slim body. When they are allowed to wear their own clothes, you will often see Emma in traditional Chinese outfits to show off her pride as a Chinese or just a simple floral dress cause she likes to wear comfortable.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.
Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Emma let out a tired sigh. She really had enough of students whispering behind her back or having people throwing paper balls at her during the entire Charms lesson. However, she stood her ground and focused on the lesson in high consideration. Studying new spells was way more important than to give those idiots her attention.

Once the class was finally over, she quickly packed her books and writing supplies. Ignoring other students mocking at her, Emma stepped out of the classroom.

Before becoming a student of Hogwarts, she had this high expectation that a school that was magical could be special but that expectation was ruined the moment she told her Housemates that her parents were normal people who weren’t born with magic, their attitude towards her immediately changed. She almost had to face a lot of prejudices from students who claimed themselves as Purebloods, saying that she should never be a Slytherin as a Muggleborn. At first, Emma didn’t understand why it was such a big deal in which House they got sorted into until she read the history of the four Houses in the library. Even she was surprised that the talking hat placed her in such a prestigious House.

Emma decided to have some peace for herself and arrived at a place where she could see the beautiful red flowers, it always made her feel calm being around there.

But that moment of peace was ruined when Emma heard someone shouted about a “blasted rat”, she turned around and saw it was a teenage boy who obviously looked older than her. She stayed quiet and watched him searching in the depths of the flowerbed, every time he got closer to the flowers he made a big sneeze. Emme could guess that he must be allergic to flowers, poor guy.

When the taller boy finally noticed her, he asked her if she needed something from him and also scolded her how rude it was of her staring at him. Emma simply frowned at him, she didn’t like how he said that to her with such an arrogant tone as if he was trying to show her he was more superior than her. Ever since she enrolled in Hogwarts, she already had enough dealing with all those self-righteous snobs every single time they found out that she was a Muggleborn.

“If staring is considered not polite then explain to me this, is it polite to ruin the flowers here?”, Emma asked him a rhetorical question with her arms crossed. Most people would have noticed a hint of sarcasm in her words. “Anyway, you should wipe your nose clean after making so many sneezes.”, before the elder boy in front of her could react, she took out a silk-made handkerchief that had an embroidered plum blossom on it from her pocket and handed it to him, whether he accepted it or not she didn’t care.

“You shouted about a rat so I assume you’re trying to find a rat...but you know...chasing after a rat won’t be easy at all. If you want to catch your rat there are effective ways to do it...for example, we can lure the rat in a trap by using a delicious bait such as fruits or vegetables.” Emma offered her suggestion with a smirk and slowly leaned in closer to him, “So what do you say? Want to try it out?”
