Biography: (300 words minimum.)

Nishka’s father is Swedish, and comes from a line of famous dragon tamers and handlers. The Eldkvist family name was one that she carried proudly but it was her mother’s Indian roots that really held her heart. She was born to Mikael Kristoff Eldkvist and Kali Nagarajan.
Her mother’s ancestors were snake charmers and Cobra worshippers. It was their religion and source of power, praying to the King Cobra or Nag. Temples were erected in the Cobra’s honor in the Nagarajan village and kingdoms past. This art was well guarded amongst its practitioners and thus was soon dying. The magic that once flowed strong in their blood was diluted over time as the clans expanded and procreated with non-magical folk.

When Kali’s father, Ananda migrated to Central Europe in his caravan, he hoped only to sell various powders, roots and herbs his people did not wield the power to make full use of any more. However, he ended up marrying a fair European maiden in the course of his travels. She was no ordinary firang or foreigner in his eyes. There was a fair deal of power he could sense in her, and perhaps that is what moved him to commit the very mistake that had lead to the demise of the great Nagarajan clans. It was, to choose love and family over the power of blood.

Ananda’s wife was in fact born a squib in a magical family of Swedish descent. However, their children were capable of performing great feats, a beautiful meld of Scandinavian and Indian magic.
Nishka’s mother Kali was the first of such a mixture of blood, and became skilled in wand work as well as in the ancient art of snake charming, the former being taught to her at Durmstrang Institute and the latter being an essential component of home-schooling. The Nagarajans also taught their children Ayurveda, the science of using plant products for magical and healing purpose.

It is because of this rich history that Nishka is the inquisitive, bright eyed woman she is today. Her father shared with her the Eldkvist’s methods and secrets to dragon handling and her mother trained her to have a keen nose and eye for ingredients to brew the best concoctions.
Nishka had accompanied her father on many of his expeditions, when she graduated from Durmstrang herself. She had raised several dragon hatchlings, observed full grown dragons in their natural habitat, and had almost gotten herself killed on several counts. Her passion for dragon-lore and future plans for research burn bright, but are still dim in the light of her love for apothecary work. Her family runs an apothecary business in Sweden. She migrated to London in ’49, just as the Hexenreich was going under.
She has lived in London and hopes to open a branch of the family business here or to apply as a professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.

“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“

Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.

Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.

She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.

Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.

Nishka was bored. And that was why she had been wandering around Diagon alley that day. She had hit a massive roadblock in her paper writing on imprinting patterns of wyvern hatchlings. She needed to devise a better methodology for studying their behaviour and quantifying it. Papa was counting on her to come up with something before the month was due. Hatchling season was almost upon them in Northern Finland.

However, brainstorming was not working for her today. Not even the lemongrass tea would ebb the throbbing in her head. And thus, Nishka had decided on taking a walk through the busy alleyway. She could peruse through some of the new potions book editions out for the season, though she much preferred second hand and shopping in Knockturn.

She was being slowed by the rush of the crowd at lunch hour when she saw what looked like a woman’s shoe toppling into view. “Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!" Nishka immediately bent forward to pick up the heeled shoe. She smiled at the shoe then, seeing the broken heel as a familiar foe of her past.

She looked around for the owner of the shoe and approached her, looking down and offering her unoccupied hand to lift her up.
“Pretty heels you have”, she started in her Scandinavian accented tone. “How many times I have found myself in your shoes- literally! You really must fix these. Too fragile for everyday use ja?”
She looked at the woman kindly and suggested, “I have the perfect binder and sealant for heeled shoes. I guarantee you, you will not have this happen again. Care to take a look?”

Nishka was only trying to help, and she truly believed that her means of helping was heavily intertwined in her skill and trade. She was completely oblivious to how she might appear to be money minded. She was just someone who cut to the chase a little too quickly. Besides, it was important to spread the word and forge valuable customer relations early on in the game.

She migrated to London in ’49, just as the Hexenreich was going under.
She has lived in London and hopes to open a branch of the family business here or to apply as a professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

However, one thing she had to keep in mind was her power to speak to snakes. She had heard that this was rare and not looked upon in a good light in British Wizarding society. Nishka had been able to speak to snakes since before she could walk. They had snakes at home, housed in a proper temperature controlled terrarium. Of course, they were not their pets –no, the Nagarajans would never insult the snakes by calling them pets. To Nishka, and the rest of their family, snakes were their patrons, and they their humble hosts. The Cobra was the most revered guest and honourable presence if they ever had the good fortune to meet one.

She would not be able to explain this side of her history to people even if she tried. Their religious activity was somewhat akin to occultism, and a very positive influence in their home. Nishka was a believer. She saw the world through the Naagin’s eyes.

In Hogwarts, the house associated with snakes was considered dark, and potential housing for their society’s darkest, most powerful wizards and witches. The blood argument that the Slytherins held so strongly was a foreign concept to her. In their home, the mixing of blood was a good and welcome omen for achieving new horizons.

Of course, Nishka was not oblivious to the result of the mixing of magical blood with those of muggles. Her own people had withered and died when they married outside of the clans. However, as she had learned over her closer family’s experience, harmony and fluidity was more important in the grand scheme of things. If the goddess Kali demanded it, their blood would be blotted out of history itself and their ancient magic lost forever. And thus the goddess paves the way for a new birth of a new people. It is but the way of life. Nishka Eldkvist was also very much Nishka Nagarajan and she could never forget it.
