CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name:
Andromeda Ismene Paladin

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable:
Ursula Cherrywell, Kieran Cherrywell, Romulus Applesnow

Character age:
36

Character education:
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – 1914-1921 – Slytherin

Strength and weaknesses (details please):
Strengths

• Loyalty – Winning the loyalty of Andromeda Paladin is something difficult to accomplish, thanks to her suspicious and demanding nature interfering with the possibility of a personal connection. However, if one does manage to earn it, then she already has pledged her eternal loyalty to you. She will support and back you up whenever she is able to and try to protect people she trusts from being hurt. Breaking her trust, or even showing the slightest doubt in her, will result in Andromeda breaking off all connections with you and ignore you. The woman almost never gives second chances as she takes relationships of trust and alliances personally.

Organization and Punctuality – The Paladin strongly believes that even the most basic skills of organization lead to moderate success, always trying to apply organization in every aspect of her life. Ever since her childhood, Andromeda was always disciplined by her parents in organization as they told her once that she should be able to know and find everything of hers in the dark. Her classroom, office, and room are freakishly neat, something that has often freaked others out. Along with organization, Andromeda also believes that punctuality is another key to success. She believes that by being tardy that one will miss opportunities and chances to succeed in life due to a lack of time management. She detests tardiness on anyone's part, whether they are her superiors, equals, or her inferiors and is never afraid to inform them of the time.

• Unbiasedness – For the most part, Andromeda shows no particular bias towards any group of people based on their blood purity, age, or gender, as she believes that none of these things is involved in the disposition of an individual. Although she is purist, she does not believe that Purebloods are superior to Muggleborns in terms of work ethic or intelligence, recognizing that each student is individual and cannot be judged on superficial conditions such as the purity of blood.  Andromeda almost always gives everyone the same treatment, whether they like it or not. The only sort of real bias she shows is house bias, being somewhat pleasant towards Slytherins, occasionally liking Ravenclaws or telling them to be quiet, ignoring the Hufflepuffs, and being antagonistic to Gryffindors. Her attitudes towards each house stems from family opinion on the four houses of Hogwarts. She secretly likes students who are strong in mind and character and are successful, especially if they belong in her former house but doesn't inform them of her like or let it affect their grades in class.

No-Nonsense Attitude – From a young age, Andromeda Paladin has always had an attitude that is easily described as 'no-nonsense'. She does not tolerate tomfoolery of any kind when work and serious matters are at hand, not afraid to rebuke them for their lack of seriousness. Thanks to her experiences from being in school, she can usually catch on if someone is mucking about or being serious. Even if she senses this from her superiors or equals, she is still not afraid to inform them of their behavior. She believes that a serious attitude is required to succeed in the classroom and that any foolishness will prevent them from passing and succeeding.

Astronomy – Astronomy has always been a subject that Andromeda has excelled in, earning Outstanding marks on her Astronomy O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. in her fifth and seventh years. Seeing as Astronomy is a 'concrete' subject that requires calculations that should be and are almost always accurate, the Paladin enjoyed that she was able to learn from her mistakes and understand the nature of her mistakes, if it was from carelessness or a major miscalculation. As Astronomy almost always incorporates logic and calculations, Andromeda is always interested in learning what is beyond the stars and the world they live in. (She is also slightly prideful of the fact that her name is also the name of a major galaxy that was discovered in 964 B.C.)

Weaknesses

Melancholy – Although Andromeda is generally a strong and unbreakable woman, if negative events affect her emotionally, then she is plunged into a dark and long melancholic state. During one of these states, she is more likely to drink and smoke often so that it calms her nerves and temporarily relieves her mind. She also begins to forget about her strict schedule and become lax due to her mind constantly thinking about the negative event. Physically, her face looks hollowed out and tired as if she was deprived of sleep for at least several days. It takes her a while to recover after a stressful and devastating event and is still very sensitive about the event afterwards. One example of such a stressful event was her belated

Harshness – Throughout her life Andromeda has been described as a 'harsh' and 'scary' lady. This harshness is due to her disciplined upbringing by the both of her parents and how easy it is for her to point out flaws and mistakes that others make. The phrases 'beating around the bush' or 'be sensitive' are never possibilities in Andromeda Paladin's approaches to problems and situations in life. She feels that one person has to at least administer the medicine to the problem or else it will never be resolved fully. By tackling the problems head on, only then can one reach the core of the problem and hopefully pound it out of the system. Regardless if this provokes a negative reaction (such as a person crying or becoming angry) she still continues on, hoping to drill what needs to be done to resolve any difficulties.

Divination – Divination is a subject that Andromeda has always had difficulty in, only scoring an Acceptable grade for her O.W.L. in her fifth year and discontinued it afterwards. She considers the subject to be nonsensical and too random for her tastes. As Andy is a person who heavily appreciates the use of logic, she thinks that the unpredictability and uncertainty of the subject makes it unteachable compared to the other subjects that yield consistent and logical results. Her skeptical and pragmatic nature along with her need for logic made it difficult for her to do well in Divination as she refuses to believe in possibilities that haven’t been aren’t tangible, such as a Spirit World and an afterlife. From her days as a student, she still retains the notion that Divination should be scrapped from the school’s curriculum.

Suspicious – Suspecting everyone is second nature to Andromeda Paladin, even casting shadows of doubt upon her own family members when it comes to matters such as inheritance and heirship. Her suspicious sides were brought out due to being raised in a competitive environment with three other siblings that promotes survival of the fittest and fending for one's self. The Paladin makes sure not to completely trust others actions as she cannot judge the ulterior motives that a person may have or if a statement is true.  It is also thanks to this suspicion that interferes in her relationships with other people and eventually pushing them away. However, this suspicion does bring a few benefits as she is familiar with how the world actually is with its lies and deceit and helps her to be wary of certain people.

• Spiteful – It is very hard for Andromeda to forget any acts that have been committed against her and have caused her pain. It is very difficult to earn her forgiveness as she believes it is a value not worth practicing on others who have given you harm and pain. If a student tries to go against her decisions actively and have tried to make her life difficult, then Andy will immediately blacklist and try to make their life as hellish as possible. Unless she is forced to interact and see them on a daily basis, she will primarily ignore them and try to pass a negative image over them when interacting with others. If a person previously had her loyalty and for whatever reason destroyed it, then her spitefulness and hatred for them will be stronger.

Physical description: Andromeda Paladin is medium in height and is slightly above average when she wears heels in order to give herself a larger presence and make herself look more intimidating. She has blonde hair that reaches below her shoulders and is straight in texture. Like many in her family, including her younger brother Alerio, she has steely gray eyes that have been described as 'penetrating' and 'intimidating' due to their color. Andromeda– or 'Andy' as she's called by her family and friends– dresses smartly, if not fashionably, preferring neutral colors to bright ones.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.): A woman who takes no sort of non-sense, Andromeda is a very straight-laced woman with a sharp tongue. When delivering constructive criticism or when reprimanding someone, she is not afraid to tackle their flaws head on, ignoring any sensitivities they may have and focusing on the flaws and mistakes that are present in the situation instead. She is generally a difficult person to get along with due to her competitive, aggressive, and suspicious sides of her personality, thinking that everyone is a competitor who may be out to get what she wants. Andromeda places enormous amounts of pressure on people she sees great potential in and people she expects a lot out of.  The Paladin hates weakness in people– physical or mental– and tries her best to knock it out of them by challenging their weakness. Despite the harsher and sharper sides that people always see, she cares for and loves people who are genuinely important to her.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: First and foremost, by teaching at Hogwarts, Andromeda will bring honor to her family as Hogwarts is a prestigious institute that many of the Paladins have attended.  By doing so, she’ll fulfill her own personal ambitions and potentially obtaining some power of her own outside of the Paladin family. Getting rid of the boredom she experiences at the Palatine would be another reason why she would want to re-enter Hogwarts. She also wants to keep an eye on her son and brother along with the other Paladins enlisted at Hogwarts, feeling it’s her responsibility to supervise them.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.): Andromeda Ismene Paladin was born on April 1st, 1903 in the Palatine Hall to Arsenius Paladin and Adelinde Rose. Despite being the youngest girl in the family, she was trained by her parents in several disciplines, particularly those that would help her to develop as a Paladin lady and to succeed in Hogwarts and her education.

As a child and even now as an adult, Andy adores her father and respects him, never questioning any decision he makes for her or for the family. She, however, did not get along with her mother as well as she did with her father. In relation to her siblings, she got on well with the eldest sister, Asteria, was on decent terms with the middle sister, Alexia, and made fun of her brother, Alerio, along with Asteria.

On September 1st, 1911, Andromeda was accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, taking her rightful place as a Slytherin with Ravenclaw being a close possibility. As a student, Andromeda was well-balanced, excelling in her studies, doing as many extracurriculars as she could, and casting an influential shadow– or so she thought, at least– over the Slytherin house. She then graduated in 1921 at the age of 18.

Her life took a turn for the nastier as she discovered she was pregnant with her childhood sweetheart’s child. Andromeda, hell-bent on never letting her family find out about her shameful mistake, spent exorbitant amounts of money on potions to disguise the symptoms of pregnancy, also concealing it with glamor charms. In the meantime, she tried to figure out what to say to her parents if they ever found out. They never would. Unable to give birth in a proper establishment, the Paladin birthed a daughter in an out of the way place; exhausted, she slept for a long time after giving birth. Her boyfriend soon told her that the female child died due to complications in the process. This event would traumatize and scar Andromeda for the rest of her life. Never fond of children to start with, she developed an ambivalent attitude towards her later husband’s children, always believing the first one should have been among them.

It is a secret she intends to take to the grave.

After the death of her firstborn, Andromeda, in an arranged marriage, was wedded to a man several years older than her. Still distraught by the death of her child, her husband comforted and reassured her, while still challenging her intellectually and proving to be her equal in wits and personality. She fell in love with him.

As for her career, the woman, very young and even more ambitious, looked for places to work for –particularly in the Ministry, in a secretarial capacity-- wanting to start at the bottom of the work ladder and work her way up as far as she could. Before she could take her first steps into the workplace, however, her sickly husband became worse, leaving him wheelchair-bound and putting several drastic strains on his health. Andromeda, determined not to lose anyone else, gave up her promising career in the workforce and instead to look after and nurse him.

After the turn of the third decade of the nineteenth century, her husband passed away, succumbing to his illness in the end. Andromeda had the idea that it was her fault that her husband passed away, believing that she hadn’t cared for him enough and that she had not done everything in her power to save him. Turning to the bottle and smoking, she found herself in a deep state of unhappiness that eventually ended years later.

Recently, determined to move on with her life, Andromeda felt as if it was too late for her to join the Ministry; not wanting to start at the bottom with younger women when she was past her thirties, she turned to Hogwarts. Filled with inspiration, Andromeda brushed up on her Astronomy and other class strengths and began to attend teaching classes in order to prepare herself for whatever Hogwarts was to throw at her were she to be accepted.

She was ready to take charge of her life, not succumbing to the flight and fancies of fate and doing whatever she wanted to before her time was up.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

The water by the lakeshore rippled, dark under the overcast sky, and thick with moss growth. Ripples grew into small waves, spreading in concentric circles that sloshed against the rocks and sent a small family of mice living in a rotted out log above the waterline scurrying for cover.

And then the lake exploded.

A fountain erupted, splattering muddy water and assorted bits of lake bottom. Something very, very large thrashed and roiled, tentacles slapping wildly at the surface.

Elizabeth despised the squid, and more importantly, she disapproved of it. It was disorderly. Truth be told, she was the sort of woman who disapproved of a great many things, the disorderly ones most particularly. A tall, severe woman in her forties who never smiled, Elizabeth was so parsimonious with praise that it was said that if good will could be saved up she'd be sitting on a pile of it like dragon over a horde. The school's Headmistress was very good at disapproval.

Brown water flowed in a tent around her upraised wand, blocked by an invisible umbrella.

“He has a cold again!” Pythagorea Proud, the school’s much-harried Deputy Headmistress fussed, as she shook a spatter of mud off of her arm. She hadn’t been as quick with her wand work. “He won’t take his medicine. We’ve been trying all morning. Someone is going to have to deal with him!”

Arms folded, the tip of Elizabeth’s pointed black and very sensible shoe tapped against the rocky bank. She glanced over at their newest Professor, her expression thoughtful. “You’ll do,” she offered flatly, her tone leaving little room for argument. This was going to prove to be a very different sort of interview...

Roleplay Response:

Lachesis had always distrusted foreign creatures; automatically, she twisted around Andromeda's neck more tightly, releasing hisses of irritation upon sighting the alien. Sometimes the coiling bothered Andromeda Paladin, but the former Slytherin's dignity prevented her from expressing opinion on the matter to her familiar.

She stroked the boa's head gently and with care as if it were her one of her own children, whispering words of comfort and love. The baby Brazilian boa's grip on her relaxed, but the irritable hissing had not stopped.

Professor Birch and Professor Proud were opposite as day and night; the former being younger, blonde, tall, and more introverted while the other was older, brunette, squat, and more explosive than her co-worker.

Proud had already proved herself to be quite an annoying woman to Andromeda with her constant flailing about and despairing about the ugly creature and its blasted medicine. If she was to be one of her superiors, then perhaps Hogwarts had gotten soft since her school days. If it wasn't for the fact that this was her interview, then Andromeda would have gladly told the squat woman a thing or two about her behavior.

“You’ll do,”

And at that moment, Elizabeth Birch-Hurst won Andromeda's respect -- challenging and troubling the applicant to take care of some crusty old mollusk was not something that most people would have done. And then most applicants would've backed out.

But not her.

Giving a compliant nod to the frosty woman, the thirty-something-year-old took light steps forward to face the squid. It had not changed it all; it was as wrinkled as sin, its mood swings were still mercurial, and somehow it was always being taken care of by the Hogwartian staff. She had never liked it.

Turning back to the Headmistress and her deputy, she flashed them a more than confident smile.

"I have to admit, you do know how to make an interview interesting."

A wand was drawn and pointed at the hideous thing as Lachesis turned around to face the two women with a smile, hissing gleefully at them.

That was, if snakes could smile.

Reply as your character to the following:

It was impossible for Dianne to stay out of trouble. It wasn't that she was looking for trouble, it's just that trouble always managed to find her. Today she wished she could find something equally familiar but more comforting.

The five-year old girl hugged her puffskein closer to her and brushed her face in its soft fur for comfort. She had named him herself and he was always her special pet. No she was certain she had never gone down this side street before. Her anxiety increased every second as darkness fell as she walked down the road. A loud noise came to her left and she buried her face in her pet's fur completely. The scared girl bolted the opposite way slamming the both of them into the wall of the nearest building. Tottering back a few steps she found a door a few feet to her right and ran to open it. What light there was inside spilled out into the darkness and she spilled into the room.

Once in, she was caught between the impulse to curl her cloak up more tightly around her and loosen her grip on it. She wasn't alone anymore but she was now among strangers instead, which was nearly as terrifying. Her puffskein had recovered from the shock of the wall and now was purring contentedly as the girl hugged it, causing a mildly calming effect on the girl. Gathering her courage, she marched up to the nearest person, pulled on the nearest clothing hem and blurted out in a loud voice:

"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She paused to draw a breath in her nearly never-ending sentence, "He misses my and his mommy."

To explain the scared girl held up the custard-colored puffskein. Sambundeakin the puffskein, however simply purred as if nothing on earth was wrong in the world.

Roleplay Response:
"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She smiled, her light gray eyes observing the child.

Andromeda found that children were the most irritating and dislikable people out of all of the age groups. They were undeveloped, dependent, and, most importantly, irrational. Irrationality was what she disliked most about children; their unpredictable attitudes and behaviors neither controlled or manipulated by logic, but rather by instinct and feeling.

The girl with the furry abomination satisfied all of the conditions of Andromeda Paladin's image of a child: mentally undeveloped to trust a stranger, dependent on an animal, and irrational enough to be afraid of the darkness and what was beyond it, and stupid enough to trust a strange woman like Andromeda.

"He misses my and his mommy."

(Realization hit her as she wondered about how worried the girl's mother would be, if she didn't know where her child was. If she had to help the child for any sake, it would be for her mother.)

She bent down to look the child in the eye, grey eyes retaining their regular coldness.

"I can help you find your mummy, child," spoke the woman as if she was talking to someone with half a brain.

Andromeda straightened up to look down at the partially developed person.

"But the important thing is, can you trust me?"

Perhaps it was a waste of a question, seeing as most children could not grasp a tangible concept such as trust.
