The May Family

The Past


Generations ago the Mays were once an influential pureblood family. They were rich and well known in the pureblood community. They were elite and highly biased against halfbloods and muggleborns.

But Aurelius May (Rex and Roy's grandfather) wasn't good with money. He made several bad investments and lost a lot of money. His son, Orville, had a gambling problem and when he inherited the family fortune, he reduced it to almost nothing. By the time Rex and Roy were born, the family had sold their mansion and moved into a cheaper house in a muggle city.

The Mays' lavish lifestyle was a thing of the past, as well as their respect among purebloods.

Rex accepted this and was content to live an average life. He challenged his father's biases and was happy to live among muggles. He got a Ministry job,  found a wife, and started a family.

But Roy couldn't let go of the past. He always resented his father for wasting the family's money. He believed that purebloods were superior and hated living around muggles, but he didn't have enough money to move. Eventually, he started a family and got a job as a potioneer.


The Present (Rex & Arlene)


A few years ago, Arlene fell ill and quickly became bedridden. Constance already looked after Rosamund whenever her parents were busy (which was almost all the time, except for a few months in the summer that she spent with Roy and Ruth) but caring for her little sister became wholly her responsibility. Esther missed a lot of school because she came home to help the family, but as soon as she graduated and turned seventeen she moved away.

Constance and Rosamund moved out to London, so Rosamund could meet other magical children before she goes off to Hogwarts. Constance got a job and basically became Rosie's mother.


Although Rosamund only spent a small percentage of her time with Roy and Ruth, their beliefs wormed their way into her head. She's become prejudiced and determined to reclaim the Mays' former position in high pureblood society.

Biography:
Esther grew up in a small apartment in Birmingham with a younger sister named Constance, her mother, Arlene, and her father, Rex. Her mother and father were both magical and went to Hogwarts. Esther's father  was a Gryffindor and works a boring desk job in the ministry. Arlene May was a Hufflepuff, but now she sells robes at a shop on Diagon Alley. Constance is a squib and is perfectly happy to live as a muggle. All Esther wants is to be more than her parents expect of her and is ecstatic to receive her Hogwarts letter because she thinks it means she has potential to do something special.

Personality:
Esther is a perfectionist and very persistent although she can be impatient. She tries to be cooperative but she goes her own way. She is cheerful and kind on a good day. However, Esther can sometimes be unforgiving and hard on others because she has high standards for herself due to her parents thinking she won't go far. She fidgets a lot and enjoys sledding, macrame and sailing. She loves astronomy, astrology, and everything to do with the stars. She fears failure, abandonment, and being forgotten.

Appearance:
Esther has shoulder length wavy light brown hair and grayish blue eyes. She is medium height and very plain. Because she looks so ordinary she wants to stand out even more.

Option I:

Esther was walking down another dank corridor after potions class. She had gotten lost after leaving the classroom and was looking for a Slytherin to help her. The dungeons were particularly dislikable in Esther's opinion made worse by the awful stench. Potions class wasn't that fun either. Too smelly.

Esther was just about to go back to the classroom when turned a corner to find a girl about her age. "Hi, do you know where the stairs are? I was coming from potions class and got little lost. Can you help me?" Esther asked hopefully.

The girl looked terrified. Esther guessed the girl hadn't come voluntarily. Thinking she probably wasn't going to get a response, Esther shrugged and continued walking.
