Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Dorian Fortnum IV

Birthday: February 29

Hometown: Mousehole, Cornwall, England

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): Third, Fourth

Biography:

Dorian Fortnum was a well known curse breaker for Gringotts, having helped the bank recover precious artifacts from hexed tombs and vaults around the globe. Dorian Fortnum II retired from the Office of Misinformation after successfully covering up a Hungarian Horn-tail attack that demolished half of a rural muggle village south of London. Dorian Fortnum III worked as a Muggle-Wizard liaison in the military division, monitoring for intelligence about the muggle war and keeping the muggle Prime Minister’s office informed about the happenings of the Wizarding World.

Dorian Fortnum IV could barely walk down the hallway without tripping over his own feet.

He was an only child, and the Fortnum name weighed heavily on his shoulders. So far, he had brought no additional accomplishments to the family name. He was an average student in most of his subjects. He was too terrified of bludgers to play quidditch. Dragons and other magical beasts gave him heart palpitations.

Dorian had hoped that his start at Hogwarts would help bring him closer to his father, who seemed perpetually disappointed in Dorian’s shyness and lack of gumption. Each Dorian Fortnum before him had been in Gryffindor, the house of bravery and adventure. Being in Gryffindor would at least be something he could share with his father.

But when the sorting hat was placed on his head, Gryffindor was not the house it pronounced.

Another hope of carrying on the family tradition dashed.

Skating through his first years at Hogwarts, Dorian kept mostly to himself. His shyness seemed amplified at the castle, where so many outgoing students cast large and intimidating shadows. The only field where Dorian found himself excelling was in Charms. He had a knack for charming small, silly objects. Flying paper crows, anti-unlocking charms for his private journal, enlarged dust motes and perpetually filling water glasses. Most of his charms were not particularly useful for many applications and they didn’t always work exactly as planned (glasses of water had overflowed on his nightstand more than once), but it was one of two things at which he felt even moderately successful.

The other area in which Dorian excelled was photography. He loved capturing small moments on film. Leaves falling from a tree perpetually in a moving photo. Books floating through the library back to their rightful spot. Students shifting in and out the quidditch stands dressed to support their houses.

He didn’t really participate in these events, only catalogue them. Observe from the sidelines. As such, he developed a bit of a reputation as a loner. An outsider. A bit of a creep, always watching but never speaking.

That suited Dorian, though. It allowed him to keep to himself. It kept his social anxiety in check. It kept his debilitating shyness from being so apparent to his classmates.

That was the way Dorian liked it.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Slytherin, Ravenclaw

Personality: While Dorian comes across as a brooding loner, in reality he is simply quite shy and socially anxious. Dorian is a kind and gentle soul, but his family reputation adds to his anxiety. He can be clumsy at times, which adds to general sense of public embarrassment. Often, Dorian worries that he will not be able to live up to the expectations of his father or grandfather, and he had a bit of a complex about it.

Appearance: Dorian is tall for his age, standing at 5’7”. He is thin, extremely pale, and with dark hair and a narrow face. His features seem large and somewhat exaggerated on his thin frame, and his eyes are a pale, clear blue.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

RESPONSE:

Flowers. This time of year their vibrancy was so rich and warm, a fleeting burst of brightness against the dreary gray backdrop of Hogwarts. Their petals undulated in the breeze and bees buzzed from one blossom to the next. Like so many things, this was a temporary eruption of life that would pass into colder darker months.

Dorian kneeled down, camera to his eye. He wanted to catalogue this moment, catch the bees moving lackadaisically from one perch to the next collecting pollen across their fuzzy bodies. Bright reds and vivid greens and bold blues with black and white striped insects skimming along their surface.

It was a moment in time worth capturing.

Long fingers adjusted the lense, bringing the subjects into crisp clear focus. Everything was framed beautifully. A small smile pulled at the corners of his lips. But just as he was about the snap the picture and freeze the moment in time eternally, the leaves rustled and the bees scattered.

Pulling the camera away from his face, Dorian looked up at a sneezing, snuffling figure. The boy in front of him wiped his nose on his sleeve, and Dorian grimaced. Still, it was none of his business what disgusting habits this boy had. Dorian shook his head, and a few strands of dark hair fell across his pale face. Releasing his camera to hang from the strap around his neck, Dorian stood and brushed some dirt from his knees. Another person was there, so it was time to leave.

Before he could go, though, the boy spoke.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

The boy sounded arrogant, even with a runny nose. Dorian felt his stomach drop and his breath tightened in his chest. It felt like devil’s snare had wrapped itself around his chest, but Dorian was unable to calm down enough to keep it from strengthening its grasp.

“I...I wasn’t staring,” Dorian muttered.

“I was just trying to get some photographs.” Dorian held up his camera, offering it up by way of explanation. “It looks as if you’re the one who needs something, not me.”

He had meant for it to be an offer. The boy seemed to be looking for something, and Dorian prided himself on his keen attention to detail. It was one of the few abilities he was proud of. But instead his tone came across as cold, accusatory. Dorian winced. His words never seemed to come out right.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
It was a lovely crisp day in the park, which was within walking distance of his grandfather’s over-large home in Hogsmeade. Dorian was grateful for that. Being in the presence of both Dorian Fortnum II and Dorian Fortnum III on these family occasions was beyond suffocating. The fresh air was a welcome reprieve from the tension-thick atmosphere of his grandfather’s home.

Once again, Dorian had failed to live up to their expectations, failed to make quidditch team, failed to at the top of his classes, failed to bring home new friends. His family name weighed heavily on him.

Escaping to the park helped.

He watched as young witches and wizards zoomed across the azure sky on their toy brooms, silhouetting against the vivid molten sun. Taking his heavy camera from around his neck, he pushed back his dark hair and held the viewfinder to a bright blue eye. Perhaps he could capture the beauty of their movement in a picture, one that would encapsulate the warm and carefree childhood he had not been able to experience himself.

Adjusting the shutter, a long finger hovered, ready to click and commit the moment to film. But before he could do so, one of the children ran up to him in a bit of a huff.

”You!...do you want to play?”

The young girl had a shockingly authoritarian tone. What little color Dorian had in his cheeks vanished as he blanched. Play? With these children? He hadn’t come here to interact with anyone. In fact, he had been hoping to escape interaction.

“Not particularly,” he replied, his voice sounding firmer and less caring than he had intended. He winced as the words escaped his lips. “I just mean...I...well, no, I don’t particularly care for childish games.”

He winced harder. Childish games were perfectly acceptable for someone her age, but his tone betrayed him yet again, making it sound as though he were trying to seem impressive and mature. He wasn’t, but no matter what he said, his words never seemed to come out right.
