Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Born to Alejandro, a Spanish man, and Halina, his Russian wife, in Arkhangelsk, Russia, Sergio Melachontes came to the world as the only son of a small, dwindling Pureblood family, slowly pulling itself towards genetic diversity and away from extinction. Much of the Melachontes family fortune had been spent a little over a century earlier, in the arrogant, insulated, border-line insanity induced excess of the old blood. The loss of assets was left to be recouped by succeeding generations; a task within sight of being achieved by the time of Alejandro’s and Halina’s marriage.

Sergio’s mother and father, while devoted to their son as the fruit of their coupling and as their heir, were reliable only in their distance from him and the young child quickly found himself feeling strangled by the vast, thick emptiness between he and them. As the boy grew, he developed an interest in the natural world and the fine details within it. His parents, meanwhile, busied their own minds on the details of their newly budding wealth, which brought a re-entrance of the Melachontes name to the Eastern European Pureblood social scene. When he wasn’t required by a tutor, a tailor for measuring clothes or by cuteness-demanding party guests of the Melachontes household, Sergio would wander through neighbourhoods, investigating beetles and other inhabitants of small ecosystems. And, when he wasn’t needed for some specific task, neither Alejandro nor Halina appeared to notice their son’s absence. It was during these childhood solo explorations that Sergio met the Aliyevs.

A young, newlywed Muggle couple, the Aliyevs treated Sergio with seemingly infinite patience, humour and tenderness; taking time to listen to his imaginings and indulging his curiosity in Alexei Aliyev’s Muggle sleight of hand “magic” tricks. Thus, on a visit to their small house, Sergio manifested his wizarding ability in front of Alexei and his wife Maryana: a coin “conjured” by Alexei from behind the boy’s ear suddenly levitating at the onset of his excited squeals of laughter.

The couple took it well, all things considered, and kept their knowledge a secret.

By his eleventh birthday, Sergio was admitted to Durmstrang Institute. His parents, family by blood, assured him that they would remain in contact, to make sure their son was doing well both socially and in his studies. In truth, he could hardly have cared less whether they stuck by their assurance or not, as Sergio had by then come to see the Aliyevs as his true family, by love and spirit.

As a strong-bodied and charismatic young man, Sergio found moving in an out of conversation and other interactions relatively easy at school, though he rarely felt much of a connection to fellow students below the smile or dry comment. And, most of the time, genialities being superficial seemed to be mutual. To counteract the emotional distance from others, Sergio channelled most of his energy towards his studies. It was during this period that he began his first readings on the topic of Animagi.

Angelique Reinhardt was different from the others though. Elegant, attentive, intelligent and fiercely whole-hearted in all she did, Sergio found himself a genuine friend in the young woman, with both sharing a fascination with wandlore, duelling and the potential behind certain “Dark” elements of magic (particularly in the case of animal anatomy and artifacts for Sergio). With the passing of her fifth year (Sergio’s sixth), however, Angelique left Durmstrang and transferred to Hogwarts. Sergio spent the remainder of his school time among comfortable acquaintances, with regular letters from his family-by-blood reminding him to spread the Melachontes name well; that he owed them and their blood to make their name famous. Seeing them over holidays felt like pulling teeth. And the couple’s tone and mood during their Pureblood parties seemed, to Sergio, less and less social over time and more and more desperate or sad, however lavish they were. There were times when all he wanted to do was fly away from everyone. In such moments, he would write letters to the Aliyevs; no magical news or details but simple chatter, thoughts and wishes of home written down.

After graduating, Sergio travelled back to Russia and returned to the house of his parents, before he would push out to his own life. While still decadent and luxurious in essentials, Alejandro’s and Halina’s home was decidedly more bare than it had been in their son’s youth. The pattern of their earlier behaviour had apparently continued. The two of them had frittered much of their wealth away. Upon the re-emergence of their son, the bitter and wasted couple demanded to him that he stay, earning money for them to live on and working to rebuild their name and reputation. Sergio felt nothing but nausea looking at them and quickly collected his things before leaving them to each other. His rejection of them caused both parents to declare him banished from the family forever.

The Aliyevs still lived where they had years ago, and both welcomed Sergio into their home again with wide smiles and open arms. His time with them would be short though. The time for cuddles and coin tricks had passed by with the years. It was time for Sergio to enter the adult world of work, discovery and risk. To the far north east of the Muggle area known as Norilsk stood a large hidden town for magic users; a hub for both commerce and particular subjects of academia. Sergio took a position in the field of wand core research, studying animal organs and substances for their magical properties, along with wood types, in order to explore optimum core and wand combinations. Through his spare hours, the man took time to continue his Animagus research on the side, pouring his attention, knowledge and magical ability into the task over the next two years.

After many hundreds upon hundreds of hours studying and preparing, Sergio achieved his Animagus form: that of an orange-breasted falcon. It was freedom in all directions! And, while the freedom came with his own solitary presence, it was a separation which Sergio could dictate for himself at last. Wizarding law required registration for such an ability, but registration would only leech the control out of the entire thing for Sergio. With other people aware of and monitoring his movements and magic use, the entire endeavour would become relatively pointless. Eyes hunting for his falcon shape, questions and issues.

No. Sergio Melachontes stubbornly decided to remain unregistered and hide his skill.

One day, in his work liaising with wand shops in the area, Sergio was surprised to discover Angelique Reinhardt working in a shop nearby. The two became fast friends all over again. Aside from connecting with their respective careers, Angelique excited Sergio with her strong passion through all emotions. The woman did nothing by halves. When she loved, it appeared to be fuelled by every nerve and every bit of spirit. The same was true of her bitterness, her joy, her spite, her hopefulness and her pride. Being with Angelique was like living with a whirlwind of strong personal convictions, and that honesty was refreshing to Sergio. Intimate friendship quickly developed into love between the two; a love thick with emotions but also commitment, to their ideals and to each other. With their relationship so firm and built on honest connections and expressions, Sergio shared the details of his Animagus ability with Angelique. In time, the couple’s relationship and trust developed enough for them to create a daughter together: Raven Evangeline Reinhardt.

The small family would be sabotaged from the outside though. Unknown to them, Angelique’s father, Gabriel, had found out about the relationship.

Not long into the life of infant Raven, Angelique received a letter from her family, calling her urgently to the estate overseas. A small family matter needed her attention. It would only take a couple of days at most, there and back. Sergio stayed home, rather than travel with the baby for such a fast issue to resolve. Soon after arriving in England, Angelique sent a letter by owl to her partner: a message of safety, love and of a upcoming swift return. It was the last word Sergio received before the silence and utter lack of Angelique’s presence that followed.

Dangerous possibilities flooded into the man’s mind. Fears of regrets realised and abandonments planned, or of health and safety compromised, or of being convinced to never go back by a third party. Or of being restrained and held from coming back. In either case, he had to find out what had happened. But he still wouldn’t take tiny Raven on such a journey. Aside from the child’s own mother, there were only two people whom Sergio would trust with someone so precious to him.

The Aliyevs still lived where they always had - a beautiful constant in the world. Sergio sat them down and told the couple his story while making himself explicitly clear that they owed him nothing. They both agreed, without hesitation, to hold and take care of Raven for as long as he needed. For the entire length of time the Earth existed, if it was necessary. Sergio went with them over the details of where he was going and how he planned to get there. He didn’t expect to take long but, then again, he lacked the ability to foresee such things. If Angelique was sick, perhaps he’d have to wait for her to be well enough to travel. If she was restrained by someone else, it might take days or weeks to find her and get her back, legally or otherwise. And, if she had consciously decided to leave him and never come back … How long would he stay there trying to convince her to rejoin her family in Russia?

After travelling to London and getting a small, low-profile room above a pub, Sergio set about taking quiet reconnaissance trips to the Reinhardt estate. Despite using his Animagus form, he kept his distance. Even out of his human form, an observant witch or wizard would likely notice a non native orange-breasted falcon sitting by a window for long periods of time and connect a few magical dots. His impatience for information almost had his blood boiling but Sergio restrained his mind; if anything was out of the ordinary, it would help no one to spark the situation up more. So, he waited, keeping a wide perimeter around the estate.

It didn’t take more than two days to spot Angelique within; able-bodied and serene, without any hint of sickness or stress. Sergio switched to working under the assumption that his lover had simply decided to stay in England, or had been convinced to.

He wrote and sent letters to her: reminding her of their daughter together back home, reminding her of his love and asking her to meet him. He had to see her; away from the estate, away from his room. No one else needed to be involved. It was all about them. Their family. Just Sergio and Angelique, with little Raven asleep at home. If he could remind her of that, if he could only keep everyone else away, while everyone worked to keep him away, their little family must stand a chance.

The first letter went by unanswered.

The next few letters went by unanswered as well.

Finally, after one more try, a response came back in Angelique’s handwriting. It agreed to the proposed meeting, to stop the letters and to send the letter writer - “delusional as you are” - back home. The meeting place was a small, cold hill, far outside of town. A location away from ears to hear family names dropped, away from people with any interest in the couple’s affairs. An old meeting site for an old love.

Angelique arrived alone, as per the agreement. She seemed vaguely surprised and frustrated to be there; like a woman who had joined an old friend for lunch, only to be told by the friend that he assumed from it all that they were now in a relationship. And no matter how eloquently or patiently Sergio pleaded his case, the result was always Angelique becoming more fed up. By all her accounts, they were never together. There had been no relationship. Acquaintances of the distant past and vague colleagues, certainly, but nothing more; with all of Sergio’s other “lies” either being bizarre plots or pathetic ramblings. They argued on the hill like verbal hurricanes. Like old lovers.

Although, allegedly, they were not such a thing at all.

Angelique had never been one to lie or hide her opinions. Thus, whatever she’d said to him, Sergio felt forced to consider those what she genuinely believed in that moment. None of that made sense. Then there were the details of their history. By her comments, it sounded like Angelique was reciting anecdotes as told to her by another person. Anecdotes about her own life, with gaps and missing threads in the telling. Angelique had been gotten to by the Reinhardts, Sergio felt sure of it. The conversation, in that form, was over. He was never going to convince her of anything as they stood there.

He dropped the issue and prepared to leave. He would go home, hold Raven again and thank the Aliyevs for their help while he searched his mind for his next plan of attack. Something subtle. Something more long-term. He cursed the distance between himself and his family: Raven physically, so many miles away, and, Angelique, mentally - lost and taken. He wasn’t about to leave her. Not then, not ever.

One way or another, he’d find a way to stick with Angelique at all times. Family stuck together.

Before leaving, he shouted out a frustration-fuelled parting shot towards the woman moving away: “That Reinhardt blood’s scrambled you, Angelique! That family’s managed to turn a fiercely loving mother into their drone. Or, finally, into an inveterate liar like them.” Sergio then switched into his falcon form and turned away to fly off. He barely even heard the enraged scream of ‘Imperio’ from Angelique’s lips before everything changed.

It was impossible for Dianne to stay out of trouble. It wasn't that she was looking for trouble, it's just that trouble always managed to find her. Today she wished she could find something equally familiar but more comforting.

The five-year old girl hugged her puffskein closer to her and brushed her face in its soft fur for comfort. She had named him herself and he was always her special pet. No she was certain she had never gone down this side street before. Her anxiety increased every second as darkness fell as she walked down the road. A loud noise came to her left and she buried her face in her pet's fur completely. The scared girl bolted the opposite way slamming the both of them into the wall of the nearest building. Tottering back a few steps she found a door a few feet to her right and ran to open it. What light there was inside spilled out into the darkness and she spilled into the room.

Once in, she was caught between the impulse to curl her cloak up more tightly around her and loosen her grip on it. She wasn't alone anymore but she was now among strangers instead, which was nearly as terrifying. Her puffskein had recovered from the shock of the wall and now was purring contentedly as the girl hugged it, causing a mildly calming effect on the girl. Gathering her courage, she marched up to the nearest person, pulled on the nearest clothing hem and blurted out in a loud voice:

"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She paused to draw a breath in her nearly never-ending sentence, "He misses my and his mommy."

To explain the scared girl held up the custard-colored puffskein. Sambundeakin the puffskein, however simply purred as if nothing on earth was wrong in the world.

Roleplay Response:
A long, muscular hand curled itself, like a talon, around a dark quill, sweeping the inky nib across a parchment sheet with quick pecks and scratches across the surface. Sergio began writing letter number three. He reached his empty right hand over a few inches and picked up the ale set beside him. It was amazing; a nation as old as England and the only two things it had come close to excelling at were literature and producing alcoholic beverages. Though, as accomplishments went, neither of them were bad things to have on one’s list.

Sergio’s mind flew back to his own greatest accomplishment: his daughter, Raven, so many miles away. The man reckoned his own accomplishment to be greater than that of any nation.

Two letters unanswered. Two letters ignored or unreceived, with no way for Sergio to know for sure which it was. He needed to understand. He needed information. He needed more time. Charging in, wand drawn, would not have helped anybody - if anybody needed help. Sergio focused on the tightly formed scratchings of his quill to calm his mind. He decided to take another trip out to look around the next day. Stay high, stay distant. It was late and there was nothing to do currently except write. Write and keep calm. Time favoured those who were in the right; it just took a lot of itself to show that sometimes. One still had to be clever about it though.

The stories of every culture told of fierce figures - people of action - who smelled a hint of resistance and bounded, face first, into a dark lair, to fight in “glorious” battle, to boast and win through all contrived odds. Which was why such stories and characters were marked under ‘fiction’ and not as part of reality. Reality destroyed heroes. It understood the heroic genre better than they did and, thus, it played their own rules against them. Sergio Melachontes was not a hero. He was smarter than that. Sergio intended to deconstruct the heroic narrative for his family’s own ends. At which point, they would escape the narrative together completely and continue with the task of writing their own.

He just needed more time.

The grip of a small hand tugged on the waist area of Sergio’s jacket. The hand belonged to a small girl, whom appeared to be around five years old. Sergio put his letter aside and gave her his full attention, as what he could only presume were words poured from her mouth in a torrent. While his conversational English among adults ranged from basic to decent, depending on the conversation, the Russian man had never learned the skill of translating English enunciated from the mouth of a child. There was more difference between the two than Sergio would have ever guessed.

The key words helped. "... It’s dark … Worried … Wants to go home."

I know what you mean, thought Sergio.

The girl held up a custard coloured puffskein. "He misses my and his mommy." She was lost. Sergio looked at the little girl and gently combed her hair with his fingertips. Somebody’s daughter, older than his own but, perhaps, just how she might be when she grew up some day; lost and alone. The pub was quiet in the front around Sergio. Further, from the back, however, were echoing roars of drunkards, rogues and slovenly hogs who showed that there was smooth evolution between humans and their other animal ancestors. And a child who could have walked into any door in the neighbourhood.

Sergio made a mental note: never let Raven walk around alone. Ever.

He quickly folded away his parchment sheets and other small belongings while considering the situation. The girl had mentioned something to eat, he thought. What did five year olds eat? Something simple and filling, perhaps. Sergio looked into Dianne’s small eyes and smiled. “I will get you food,” he said, hoping his accent wasn’t too strong for her, “and, while you eat, we can think about how we will get you safely home. So, food first. How does butter on the bread with a glass of milk sound?”
