Magical Strength (pick one):Divination

Biography: Andrew Philip Carmichael is a complicated chap. As complicated as 16 year olds get. He’s the love child of Edward (Eddie) Cadwgan and  Isadora Cadwgan(nee Eldridge), and brother to Richard Cadwgan and Archibald (Archie) Cadwgan.
This is his story..

Why don’t we start with how the unlikely pairing of his parents happened. Richard, Andrew and Archie definitely were love children, almost sickeningly so.

THE HISTORY OF- :
Eddie Cadwgan was and still is a very eccentric, boy, hardly a man. All through his Hogwarts years he wouldn’t bother with people or teachers, they were a trifle too complicated and rather boring. He was a nut for inventions and discoveries waiting beyond that veil of impossible. For Eddie, nothing was impossible.

He’d spend all his time making diagrams and schematics. Don’t get me wrong, he could’ve had a huge fan following, being the charming, cheerful fellow he was, but the thought just didn’t tick.

One day, Eddie Cadwgan, in his 5th year, was sitting in the library, having finished his papers to submit long before time. He was busy scribbling on a notepad. Just then, who would take interest in his sort but Isadora Eldridge, a bright, pretty fourth year quite unlike an Eldridge in her way.

Hestia looked at the boy, she’s heard of him and his antics. She bends over his shoulder playfully, “What you doing there,Eddie.”She raises her brows to tease him. The boy looks up absent mindedly but manages to get out an answer, “Nothing you would understand Miss Eldridge”Darling Edward was spot on with his sarcasm, it really didn’t show on his lost looking face.

Still, he pushed the pad towards her, and asked her to explain the drawing. She was able to read the blueprint like diagram, along with some complicated muggle equations, enough to figure out what the contraption was.. A bird cage that swings outside and back in.

Isadora snarked, “Oh and I suppose this would be useful for a lazy old owl keeper who can hook the cages to a timer, instead of simply letting the moonlight in himself..?”

Eddie faltered. How dare she. This was ingenious, in its own right.

The girl said, “ Well I can’t imagine anyone interested in this. It’s got no magic, simply muggle mechanics” Eddie looked at her, some amount of seriousness in his tone, “Muggles make magic of their own, with whatever little they seem to have. But you wouldn’t understand that would you, Miss Eldridge”.

She stared at him, suddenly hurt. People often associated her with her family, and so they would.. The Eldridges were known to be a tight elite wizarding family in London. They were dark, powerful wizards, and everything that came with the status.. Muggle haters, Purebooded, orthodox, hated and feared by all..

Eddie meanwhile, was staring at his notepad which was now vertical in position. He shouted , “OH MY GOD, YOU COULD ROOT OUT CARROTS LIKE THIS!”
Isadora started, and looked around for the librarian. People were staring.
The boy looked at her, “Do you have a watch? Muggle of course”. She gaped and stated indignantly,”NO.”

Eddie looked around frantically and bent towards her, whispered, “Tell me all the muggleborns in the room.” Isa’s eyes widened with anger,”JUST WHAT is that supposed to mean!?"
"Well,I didn’t mean to- well you know, I assumed your sort mark out all the muggleborns in the room so you don’t bump into them or something.”
She stared, angry and speechless. Before she could swear or hex him even, he said,”Well, I gotta run..”, and headed down the aisle. He turned around and walked backwards while he shouted,”By the way, Brilliant!”
Hestia barked,”WHAT?”

The boy grinned at her, his eyes twinkling, “You”, and turned around to run out of the library.

Isadora was blushing furiously, a smile spreading on her face. The entire library was staring at her, she sat down promptly and buried her face into a Magical Cures for Daily Unwanteds.

She couldn’t get Eddie Cadwgan off her mind.

The next time they met was after breakfast in the Great Hall. Hestia was sitting across from her twin sister, most unlike her in ways, Victoria Eldridge. There was a regular slytherin crowd having toast and jam with her that morning. Out of nowhere,a girl sitting next to Flora, leaned across towards Isadora sneering,”That nut of a mudblood Cadwgan is looking over here..”

Isa’s eyes widened. “He IS?”, and on seeing her sister’s brows knitting together, “Oh, well..That’s. Unfortunate.” She gulped up some fruit to keep from screaming. She desperately wanted to turn around, call it girlish and silly, but she did want to talk to him again.

“Who’s he pointing at?”
She ducked her head, trying not to smile.
“Is he asking for you?”, the girl stared at her, disbelievingly.

Isa answered quickly, “Must be, erm- assignment or something,” and hurriedly turned around. He smiled at her, and waved. He was waving at her. She smiled right back, trying not to laugh.

“He’s bloody excited now isn’t he. Idiot.”, the girl said, and continued eating her cereal.  Victoria wasn’t easily fooled, and she glared at her sister.

After breakfast, Isa bumped into Eddie in the corridor outside the courtyard. "Hey! What is with the waving!?There was a table full of slytherins ready to make a meal out of you", she practically yelled at him, glaring furiously.
Eddie coolly replied, "I'm not afraid of finding a few snakes in my bed." Then he frowned to himself, "Dirty joke not intended.. though some of those snakes I wouldn't mind putting in my bed-"

She stared at him, thoroughly amused, as he muttered an apology.

Eddie continued, "Do slytherins only wave or smile to each other? That's got to lead to some serious inbreeding.." And she just couldn't help laughing her heart out at that.

When Eddie talked, he couldn't help adding far more than necessary. That was just how he was. "This has got to be THE best way to find out if a girl is available. I should write this down. Ooh and maybe sell it in a book of love tips. These people will pay for anything."

It took her a while, but Isa realized that he was potentially flirting with her. She stammered as she said, “Oh, I’m late for class.” “Ah, you’ve missed what? Half hour now? No point now,” he said as he walked into the courtyard. She followed him .
“I have Charms, he likes me, he won’t mind,” he patted the spot next to him on the step.

And they had the most wonderful morning together.

So,day after day, he showed her new schematics and diagrams, for magic contraptions as well as muggle ones. They try out potion combinations and work together a lot. A perfect team really, Eddie, reaching for the sky and Isa, around to keep him from soaring too close to the sun.

But she'd been falling in love with him, slowly..and he didn't seem to be catching on, or at least she thought so. By the time they were out of school, things were getting difficult. Edward Cadwgan was brilliant, charismatic and growing to be a wonderful man, but he was still a muggleborn. He was still of unclean blood.

Isadora had kept her feelings from her sister, and not once mentioned anything of the sort to her father, Achilles. She would be completely shut out , disowned, removed from the family tree if her parents were to know.
Achilles Eldridge and Cassiopeia Eldridge ( nee Ravenswood) were her parents, and were not the kind to let their daughter fall in love with someone of Eddie’s blood and type.

She wanted to have a life with Eddie away from her family and anything holding her back, or at least she wanted the option. But that was wishful thinking, she could never just abandon all family ties that way.

She didn’t see Eddie for about a year or two or three.. Of course, she  thought of sending him owls, but she had no idea how to go about it all. They were close in school.. But she could never be sure if he had feelings for her.
So many times, so many late nights working together, she'd wanted to just go for it and trust her instincts.. but it was too much to ask from her, emotionally fragile as she was.
Isadora began to forget the idea..

One day however, they met again. It was at Diagon Alley. Eddie was at the Leaky Cauldron to fix up a spot for his Apothecary nearby. Isadora and her family were also staying there, as they had to meet with some relatives for an anniversary in the family.

They met in the street one morning and just looked at each other, slowly opening up and laughing at how long it had been.

For her own good, he had tried to stay away from her. Eddie knew where she lived. And knew how she hated it, the pressure of being an Eldridge, holding  up to the family name. Why, he could’ve found a way to take her away too, but he knew she wouldn’t abandon her family like that.

After spending the morning together, they return back to the inn, taking room numbers to meet later.

That night, Eddie was scribbling on a paper as usual. A new pet project of the month..
“Eddie..”, her voice sounded, as it had so many times before. He loved how she said it, but he had learnt to not yearn for it as much anymore..
He turned around from his work and looked at her. There she was. She was insanely beautiful, and he couldn’t stand it. His hands have stopped their excited scribbling.

She walked to him. “Are you..working..” He was confused. She’d never talked like that before, and yet he felt like he’d yearned for it his whole life.
He found that he couldn't speak. He simply shook his head slightly as she sat on him. Hestia held his head in her hands,”I dont want to distract you or anything..”
He smiled at her, eyes sparkling, absolutely dying, and completely smitten. “I-Do”

That night, they kissed for the first time ever. Since that there, event, they stayed in constant contact through Owl and floo, the regular sneaking out at night and things. They hardly had the time do these things before, they deserved to now right?

Isadora wanted to work as a healer. She had taken all the classes for it and had the temperament and passion for it. She was also interested in potions as a hobby, so with Ed’s help, they set up a little apothecary for themselves, and she applied to St. Mungo’s.
Of course, her name was Cadwgan, and they didn’t ask too many questions at the time. She had aced her interview, and they were in desperate need of new recruits.

Besides, she didn’t seem too much like an Eldridge in the least, so she hoped she could hide for now..They hadn't married yet, not officially. Isadora was still attached to her family, and wanted her father to know, and approve..to maybe even like Eddie, though that was probably going too far.

Achilles found her out soon enough, and he was furious as expected. But Isa would not falter. She had a row with her father and exclaimed that she would carry on her part of the Eldridge legacy in her own way, and if he didn’t like it, he could cut her out of the damned family tree for all she cared.

Those nights were horrible when she cried over what she'd done, but she had never felt more strongly before and knew it was right, deep down.

Over a few months, her sister was getting married into a pure blooded family. Perfect as usual her sister. Surprisingly though, Achilles asked Isa to bring Eddie.
She wasn’t sure about it, the entire Edridge family would be there, with their noses burying into her imminent marriage to the man. It would be horribly dangerous, but Achilles insisted she come with him.

Eddie came with Isa for the wedding, but left when the extended family began to arrive. He’d come just to meet darling daddy as it were. Believe me, that did NOT go well.

Achilles didn’t say much at all, and Eddie was horribly uncharismatic around him.
Finally, given the situation – Achilles hadn’t tried to kill his future son-in-law which was the okay Isadora was looking for.

They had a small wedding with some of Eddie’s relatives. The Eldridge side, that is, Achilles , Cassiopeia and Victoria attended as well.
Soon after, the newly weds were expecting a child. They had set up their apothecary in Diagon Alley, and had a nice house in the scottish countryside.
This bairn was called Richard.

The next one, born two years after, is the subject of our story, Andrew Philip Cadwgan.
And lastly, the third was again, born two years after, Archibald. They call him Archie.
Alright then. That’s that for the family.

THE CHAP HIMSELF - :
Andrew grew up a very curious young boy . He had a knack for gadgets and thingamabobs, just like his father that way. He was getting used to being 'Richard’s little brother' until another came along, Archie. Throughout his childhood he was reminded of the problems of being the middle child. On one hand, Andrew had to learn to be ‘more like’ his older brother, and yet he wouldn’t be excused for his behaviour as the youngest in the family was.

His relationship with his brothers is very simple. Richard is the boring, horribly british adult, and Archie is the most fun thing ever born, ever. EVER.
Andrew and Archie have been more close as kids. They have fought, kicked and bit, but they also know the most about each other, and work together to prank their older brother Richard. Richard’s a good sport and takes it all very well, not to worry. They have lit his things on fire, and only got their hair changed to blue for a week.

Richard and Archie have put rats in Andrew’s bed and recorded him talking in his sleep, much to Andrew’s horror.

Funny, Archie seems to have never been pranked. Can’t fool that one for a second.

Andrew loved to read, just loved it. He’d visit book shops in Diagon Alley (where they’d go often to man the shop) and hide in the back somewhere to pick out any books he wanted. He read a lot about Hogwarts too, which fuelled his dream of going there one day. His parents had already told him so much about school, and he couldn’t wait till he got in.

The boy made friends very easy, and hardly got into trouble. Any problems the Carmichaels had related to school were usually from Archie, though Andrew frequently spoke up in class to contradict teachers and point out mistakes which landed him in detention.

Andrew admired his father so much as a child, but grew to almost hate being compared to him by the relatives. As he went to Hogwarts, and was sorted into Ravenclaw he was told that it was expected. It was only right he’d be in his father’s house. As of now, his opinion of his father is rather cynical.

In the third year, Andrew was compelled to work harder at his grades, if only to do as well as Richard before him. He had always been more inclined to making friends, and reading yes, but not the textbook. Come fourth year, he did a lot of studying late into the night to deal with the piles of work.

About his ambitions and dreams, Andrew realised soon that he’s quite humble in those respects. He wants to travel, and explore foreign places, write on them. Meet people and not be tied down by anything.
Not so humble you say?

He seems to think so, for his entire family has rather worldly ambitions and dreams that only heroes in history novels seem to have had.
Eddie Cadwgan would’ve been different, just gone with the flow of life, but he was tied down by the likes of love, and family- something Andrew hopes will never happen to him.
Isadora Eldridge decided to be a Cadwgan , but still was a healer in a hospital.
Both his parents had always worked for others and their comforts. Even Eddie’s far-fetched inventions or any spark of creativity had been for the cause of making someone else’s life easier.
They do deliveries at the apothecary and almost always let someone take their parcel with a promise of paying later.

Andrew would never do that. None of those things. But wait there’s more..

Richard Cadwgan is a genius. Sheer genius at everything he tries, and has his head bent on righteousness. He wants to go into law. Even if he’s probably the most shy and softspoken of their lot, he believes in serving the cause of justice so strongly. It almost makes Andrew laugh, his conviction.

Archibald Cadwgan, don’t be fooled by his name. He’s a regular spitfire and is not afraid of ANYTHING. He wants to be an auror someday, and Andrew knows he’d lay down his life for protecting his people. Just the sort of stuff he’s made of..No wonder he’s a Gryffindor.

See what I mean? All of this makes Andrew feel like he could never be enough. He knows when the worst comes to worst, he’d probably just pick up his things and leave. Hide on the other side of the globe if it comes to that..

He might not know it yet, but the real reason he’s beginning to hate his father is because deep down, he knows he’ll never be like him. Eddie was made of sterner stuff as a kid, and is sort of maniacally pure in his intentions. A bit of gold in human flesh. Andrew is hardly his son, though he might have his antics or mannerisms.

Andrew Philip Cadwgan, however, is not one to bother himself with such emotions. He’s more about living in the moment. Living life to the fullest would be his motto, except, his motto happens to be , ‘Go get ‘em Tiger’
Now, we come to a list of Andrew’s previously mentioned mannerisms, antics , habits etc. That make him Eddie Cadwgan’s son, and otherwise rather weird :

1)Andrew sleep walks and sleep talks. A LOT. (His brother’s will testify that it’s pretty bizarre and hilarious.)
I believe he’s shouted ‘ride fast Mustang!’ at the top his lungs while sitting bolt upright in bed once.

2)He looks at people in crowds and makes up their conversations in his head. This often leads to muttering and laughing to himself while onlookers stare.

3)He has the weirdest dreams and keeps a journal for them, interpreting them in the funniest ways.

4)He has a phobia of rats. He absolutely HATES them. He also can’t stand other gnawing creatures like mice, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs. Not so hot on dogs or cats either for that matter, but at least he doesn’t hyperventilate and scream when surprised with one in his bed.
(That Archie)

5)Andrew get’s incredibly excited when staying up late, and tends to think up ideas for pranks which will definitely land him in detention the whole week. He also usually yells and swears and laughs at random moments when he’s in this mode.
(you have been warned)

Well, other than those little glitches, he’s a perfectly charming, interesting and rather handsome young man. He follows the rules of school, and does his homework on time. Regular Joe with regular friends with a not so regular family.

INTERVIEW WITH THE TIGER -:

Andrew agreed to give a few words on some topics I gave to him, just to be a part of this. So, here we go -
PS : Some disagreeable bits have been bleeped out for the purpose of being polite.

Nosey Journalist : Well, Andrew, like I said, I'll be listing a few things for you to comment on. Shall we start?

HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY
Andrew : I LOVED IT. Was so looking forward to it for so long. The books in that library, just wanted to get my hands on them, those leather bound- musty old ..pages. And there are SO MANY OF THEM! Merlin’s foggy cataracts, I’d want to go blind reading them. That’s going on the list of things. Excuse me.

EDDIE CADWGAN
Andrew : Absolute. Nut. Next question.

ISADORA CADWGAN-
Andrew : She’s so perfect. Just, really. She ‘s smart, sweet to people, funny, pretty-why’d she have to marry that weirdo and ruin it. Well, at least I’m here.. so I suppose she had good reason. Oh and great name, Archibald- Thanks Mum. Years and years of ribbing for him in my very capable hands..

But really, she is the most wonderful person I’d ever hope to meet. Really.
(mama’s boy isn’t he?)

RICHARD CADWGAN -
Andrew: Such an incredible priss. Perfect this perfect that, blah blah. Good big brother though, I couldn’t do his stuff, coddle Archie,be nice to Dad.. all that’s meant for big brothers isn’t it?

He doesn’t seem to be big headed yet but I’m waiting for him to show his genius off a little bit – just waiting to see that he’s got his ego lodged right up his (BLEEP).
Erm- I mean, posterior.

ARCHIE CADWGAN :
Andrew: Don’t duel him, you’ll cry on back home. MAN he’s bloody brilliant! Mess with him and you’ll be sorry. Otherwise, he’s really fun. Good guy to have around a lot. Plus, you get to blame the broken vase on him. And it actually works, he does break things, so it’s believable.

ACHILLES ELDRIDGE -
Andrew: He’s a very cool Granddad, really. Sure he’s sour about Dad, but I mean, I think it’s rather good of him to not kill him on the spot. I know he wanted to.

GIRLS
Andrew : Er- what?

Nosey Journalist : You heard me, girls. How do you feel about the whole girl scene. Dating, love, hotness ,etc etc. Go.

Andrew: Uhh-uhm-nothing in particular..I mean, I don’t want to fall in love or something. I’ve accepted it as a very vile, yet powerful force that brings even the sanest, most brilliant witches of her time down.. (His mum).. and so, I sure as hell hope that won’t happen to me.

Nosey Journalist: Yes, yes, but what about girls.

Andrew: Er-I haven’t thought about it. Don’t think I’m too inclined towards girls..
OR BOYS! MERLIN, you’re going to mess that one up- I know your lot, nosey journalists, always misquoting things and ruining lives.
I clearly say - Not interested in boys. Or dating. Well, not dating. I mean, it’s not like I’m saying no to any girls that might be-err-interested.
(ladies man)

Nosey Journalist : Thank you for those words Andrew Carmichael, we’re through with our interview.

Andrew : Oh good, I was getting hungry. Fancy some chicken?

-X-X-X-X-X-X—X-X-X-X-X-X

Well, that’s that. Words from our very own.. Although, allow me to add on that last thing about love. I think Andrew might just fall in love one day, despite being so adamant on staying out of it. Isn’t that how it always works?
Yeah, I think it’s all an elaborate ruse.
(Sorry Andrew, you were right about us nosey journalists.)

House Request: Ravenclaw

Personality: Andrew is a no nonsense go-getter of a child. He's great at starting up conversation and has the best people skills, but somehow, he's still his father's son -a genius at invention. He's got many quirks, that he tries to keep hidden so as to protect his reputation.  Andrew has an impish expression on his face many times during the day, and tends to use foul words rather arbitrarily.

Appearance: He's 5'11'' at sixteen years of age, with pale green eyes. A wiry or medium build.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Please reply to one of the Sample Roleplays below.
Option 2

Andrew was holding his notepad right before his eyes and walking. He was quite used to this manner of moving around, and almost always reached his destination without falling down a flight of stairs. Almost always.
But no matter, the few unfortunately clumsy incidents had been too silly to fuss over.
So a boy broke his ribs once, so what. Young chaps needed the thrill.

He heard a faint sound somewhere far off behind him. Andrew muttered in question towards the sound as he absent mindedly turned around. As he finally looked up, he saw a blonde girl standing right in front of him. She seemed to be panting.. and looking at him expectantly.
He noticed the quill and parchment in her hand. She wanted a quote from  him.
Nope.
Good for nothing nosey journalists always misquoting things, he did not need this.

Then again, it was about the prospect of serving them frogs legs at lunch.
Now how had he filtered that through..

She was pretty this girl.
Damn it, this is no time to contemplate attractiveness. Give her an answer Cadwgan.
“Yes, I believe I’d quite like to try something new for lunch.. but in that case, I’d like there to be something new at lunch every day, not frogs legs all the time.”
He shifted his gaze from directly above her, which was most comfortable for him, to slightly lower.  Now he was looking at her face.
Don’t smile, don’t be an idjit and smile..

He smiled one of his crooked smiles, the ones that came way too naturally, “You’re allowed to give in your opinion too right? Miss Paper Girl”

Okay that was very good. You’re allowed to smile now, you smartarse.,.

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name:Matt Lancaster
Birthday: 14th September
Hometown:London

Bloodline: Halfblood
Magical Strength (pick one): Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): 3rd , 4th

Biography:
If you are applying to be a first, second, or third year, your biography must be at least one hundred words long.
If you are applying to be a fourth year or above, your biography must be at least three hundred words long.

Matt has a little brother who’s three years younger to him.
Their mother would come home drunk every night to their father. Mr. Lancaster worked at the ministry and took care of his boys while constantly putting up with his wife.
There would be times when Mr. Lancaster could be found crying silently on the landing. Matt hated his mother for doing this to Dad.
He barely remembered the time when she used to be Mum. Mum used to bake them cookies and kiss Dad every time they met. She loved her family. This wretched woman was not mum.

Matt hoped and hoped that his father would stay strong and maybe leave her, and soon his prayers were answered. Mr. Lancaster filed for a divorce about 5 years ago, and they moved out of the city, into the country side.

Matt and his brother, Dave were strictly forbidden to use any magic in the house, since their mother was muggle and she wasn’t comfortable with it. Since the divorce and the move, they were encouraged to explore their magical selves.

He has had magical moments only when he’s happy. The day Mr. Lancaster took the boys fishing, Matt was able to move the boat fast over the water while fishes jumped out to greet them.

Matt has learnt to stay quiet over the years of being shunned. He's never stood up for himself, but rather for others who seemed to be in the need of a friend.

He has an affinity with all creatures like cats, rabbits, moles, rats, bugs and of course dogs. He’s very shy at first, and seems to think that animals would understand him best. The thought of any human interaction is almost terrifying to him. Matt Lancaster is also a romantic being. He loves nature and enjoys the little things in life.

When it comes to a challenge, he can’t back down . His father has often challenged him to duels and quidditch games , resulting in a Matt with a terrible thirst to prove himself. He can get quite defensive sometimes, without reason, but knows how to accept and move on.

Matt’s absolute flaw is his sarcastic language. Though he’s quiet and keeps mostly to himself, he will not pass a chance for a poke at somebody . He has done this only to those he thinks are trouble makers. Bullies who pick on little kids , find themselves either shamefully embarrassed in a crowd or hanging by their legs in a tree.

Matt isn’t one to stand by and do nothing when it comes to a fight.
When it comes to celeberation, he’s likely to hide and long for encouragement from someone to join. He needs to be pushed to get things done and is quite the procrastinator.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Any

Personality: Matt is a very awkward boy. He’s very opinionated, which is probably why he doesn’t fit in with the crowd, so he became soft spoken owing to no particular encouragement from his peers.
He's smart and open minded, not much of a charmer.

Appearance: Matt Lancaster is tall for his age and hits his head on doorways. He has dark brown hair that sits neatly on his head. He’s got an average build and an embarrassing tummy.
Brown eyes, slightly crooked teeth and a trace of a beard.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Matt's house had won the Quidditch Cup three years in a row now, but this time they weren't so lucky. The kid that had cost them the game was in his 2nd year. The great hall was filled with students groaning about the game. Matt just wanted to grab something to eat. He'd been on the poor kid's end of the stick far too many times to join in with the jeering.

As he sat himself down, he remembered that he had to write an essay for Potions. "Stupid Quidditch game" He muttered under his breath. He'd never be able to finish it in time. Since he absolutely had to get it done, Matt stuffed a pastry in his mouth and walked out of the hall, as fast as he could towards the dormitories.

'Alright.. first you've got to get some books to help you, better head to the library' ,he thought to himself. Suddenly he noticed a kid in front of him. It was James, the supposed failure to the team.

James rounded on the sound and began to shout, his brown eyes shining with tears. "WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"

Matt stood there, looking at him with the friendliest face he could make. He felt awkward trying to comfort him, for he knew how bad it was to be in  his place. If it was him , no amount of cuddling or words would help him.
So, knowing the right thing to do was to calm him down, he started.

"Um. James right? Listen.. firstly.. I was heading over to the library , to get myself some potions books.. I'm not after you."

He saw James' tear stained face and grew even more uncomfortable.

He took a deep breath, he wasn't used to any sort of speeching, except to Davie, his little brother.

"I'm sure no one in that hall blames you alright? Don't be so rough on yourself.. Go and grab a pastry. The orange ones are really good."

Matt stood there wishing he wasn't stuck in this position. He hoped that he had helped James in some way. All he needed was a pat on the back and something to eat. He blinked at James and gave him a smile.
