Biography: (300 words minimum.)

I. History:

Although he began his life already a rather somber child, after the death of his mother, Heledd Cadwallader, at age three, and a complicated childhood stuck between two successful older brothers and two unruly younger siblings, Ars Cadwallader retreated into himself. Although tolerated by his family, (and beloved by some of the younger members) Ars has never really been on good terms with his father, and the two see the other as unsuccessful. During his childhood, Ars took piano lessons for a time, but found that although he enjoyed playing classical music, the attitude that came with it didn’t suit him and began to pursue Jazz at age eight. At age ten, he saved up his allowance to buy a used ¼ sized bass and hasn’t given up the echoing sound since. Occasionally, he wrote his own music and continues to, although he almost always throws it away.

During his time at Hogwarts, Ars suffered from accidental popularity due to his mysterious nature as a musician and social apathy but never really formed many friendships that went beyond graduation. Although he dabbled in the dating scene for a time, anyone who spent more than an afternoon with him typically complained that he was cold to them. Even though he was a Ravenclaw, his marks were always just about or under average as he tended to ditch class in favor of his music. (Ars had a notable reputation in his dormitory for keeping the other boys awake and after his first year could often be found hauling his huge instrument around campus, looking for somewhere less disruptive to play.)

The years right after graduation were the most difficult, as Ars never really invested much time into thinking about what he wanted in the future. With the constant reminder of his brothers, already married and career-oriented on his mind, the unspoken stress of living up to his family name finally caught up with him and he moved out to a decrepit flat in Cardiff, working as a house musician in a number of bars. Despite being talented, Ars’s lack of personality and habit of quiet contemplation caused him to be cut from almost every band he joined within a few months. He had flings with a few of his fellow musicians from these bands as well, but each of these proved fruitless and left him a bit bitter. As he lived alone, he became very sullen, and every day thought of how much of a disappointment he’d turned out to be for his family.

During a compulsory family reunion, Ars reconnected with his ballerina cousin, Arden Cadwallader and now works for her at her club, Tchaikovsky as a house musician, bartender, bouncer, and various other things. Although his upbringing within a wealthy pureblood family wasn’t necessarily hard, Ars feels as if a change of pace is overdue and is keen to move ahead in his life, although he’s never really sure of the particular direction he’s going in. (He probably doesn’t care to know, either.)

II. Personality:

General: Ars doesn’t always seem completely there, although it’s mainly because he’s focused on listening. It’s either that, or he simply feels apathetic towards whatever someone’s saying. Even though he’s widely regarded as an attractive musician, his family history has caused him to have relatively low self-esteem, and he despises talking about the future. Despite his serious nature, he’s remarkably insightful when it comes to other people’s lives and often gives advice while serving drinks late into the night, although he’s shy when asked about himself. Because of his relationship with his younger siblings, he has a strong affinity towards children and often looks out for younger Cadwalladers, as well as orphans and Hogwarts students. Although normally cool and collected, Ars’s years of carrying a bass on his back has made him strong, and he won’t hesitate to break up a fight if it comes to it. There’s also no stopping him from starting one if one of his beloved nieces or nephews gets hurt.

Work: Somber but extremely laid-back, Ars has his own definition of “work ethic” and although he gets everything done, it’s almost never in a timely or organized fashion. As a bartender, Ars mixes just as he composes music, constantly experimenting and trying things out for himself, often before noon. Even though he’s almost always drinking on the job, it’s infamously hard to get him drunk. In the rare event he is drunk, he normally sings and becomes much friendlier and agreeable than normal.

Romance: At the age of twenty-seven, Ars has yet to have a relationship last past a year and seven months. (He counted.) Although he struggles with his sexuality, he has a preference for women, even though he’s a handful male lovers in the past. With so much failure in his social life, he often feels loveless and sometimes resigns himself to a mentality that he’s just meant to live with his music. As with most of his personal life, he’s never really brought anyone he’s dated before his family, usually answering their questions with a vague “No” or “Not yet”. Although difficult to flirt with, Ars is insanely loyal when it comes to his family, and often thinks he would make a much better father than his own. He has a taste for musicians, although he very rarely offers them more than a compliment.

Misc.: Ars may say that he “likes” or “hates” something, but these feelings are normally arbitrary and he’s usually changed his mind within a week to whatever suits him.

He usually plays his bass using a two-finger jazz style, but grips his bow in the French style.

Roleplay:
Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:

It was nearing the end of another year, and each day seemed as small and unassuming as the snowflakes fluttering down from the sky, coming together on the street to form all the months of a beautiful nuisance of a life. It’d all melt eventually, so the slight changes in weather didn’t really bother Ars, except for fact that if it got too cold, the wood of his bass could crack.

As it was, Ars wandered through the streets, vaguely aware of his mission to buy some more eggs in order to bake a cake for one of his nieces. With no particular enthusiasm, he leisurely took the long route through the bustling streets, stopping occasionally if someone recognized him and had a bit of gossip or to give one of his orphan friends a sweet from his thick jacket. Although he was dimly aware that it would be wise to make it back before three, he didn’t really care much about keeping time. He had all day.

"Coming through! Coming through!"

With the nonchalance of a cat, Ars turned his head in the direction of the voice, took silent note of the large box floating above the crowd, and stepped aside. Aggressive people tended to be annoying at best, so Ars made sure to steer clear of him most of the time.

"Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!"

Even when they treated others like cattle.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!"

Instinctively, Ars turned as he felt someone fall into him, and was greeted by a face full of glittering tinsel. The pieces of it clung in his curly hair as if they were glued, making it look like some children’s gaudy painting of the night sky. A bit confused, he blinked, his eyes moving from the man to the tinsel to the box on the ground and back again, piecing together the scene in his mind. It wasn’t rare for someone to fall in weather like this, but it was a bit weird for them to spill so many decorations in the middle of an empty street.

"For Merlin's sake!"

At least it seemed as if the man were alright.

"I am so sorry! This blasted snow!"

Although his expression didn’t betray him, Ars ran through a series of things he could potentially say to the hurried fellow. Most of them involved how he should offer an apology for his self-important behavior. However, the bartender remained impassive, simply shaking his head and bent down to try and help salvage whatever strings of glitter were left.

“Are you sure you’re alright?” he asked out of politeness. “I can take these for you, if you need me to.”
