Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Zillah Beatrix Blythe Finch

Birthday: 22 December 1959

Hometown: Tinworth, Cornwall

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): 4th, 5th

Biography:
Daphne Blythe and Miles Finch had a whirlwind romance and marriage before he characteristically shuffled off this mortal coil.

They were Hogwarts sweethearts, and their coupling was enthusiastically blessed by the families, who thought Daphne’s sweetness and levelheadedness would help settle his inner Finch. They were wrong, of course, and the Finch failed to be tamed. Instead, he was killed after foolishly deciding to bring a knife to a wand fight. He won the fight, actually, but failed to seek treatment for his grievous injuries, instead choosing to celebrate at the pub with his mates. He died of blood loss and infection several days later, just several days shy of his first wedding anniversary, and six months before the birth of his daughter.

Daphne was inconsolable, of course. The birth of her daughter did nothing to stir her from her deep mourning. Instead the child was just a reminder of Miles. She named the girl “Zillah”, meaning "shadow", and left most of her care up to relatives and nannies.

Growing up in a house full of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and more is quite an adventure. There is always someone around to remind you to stand up straight or to stop biting your nails. Usually several someones at once. It seemed no matter what she did, she was doing it wrong, or not good enough, or just doing the wrong thing entirely.

Her mother was mostly absent from the chaos, choosing instead to spend most of her time alone, sewing frilly dresses for Zillah and reading romance novels. Zillah didn’t care for romance novels and usually gave the dresses to her cousin Pippa, so they didn’t have much in common to connect them.

She spent most of her time with Pippa. Pippa’s parents were similarly absent from her life and they had that, if not anything else, in common. Zillah felt responsible for her. No one else seemed to be looking after her, and the girl clearly couldn’t look after herself. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant. Pippa was nice, which was more than Zillah could say about the rest of her cousins.

Her biggest dream was escaping from the rambling Blythe estate for good. Hogwarts proved somewhat of an escape, but there was still family there keeping an eye on her. She wanted to run off somewhere where no one knew who she was. Somewhere she could do whatever she wanted without anyone commenting about taking after her father.

This dream was her guilty pleasure. She fantasized about buying a little cottage in the middle of nowhere, or a flat in London, but obligation to her family always brought her back to reality. It would never happen. She would finish Hogwarts with respectable marks and be married off to the most appealing suitor—likely a cousin—given the family track record.

So she tried to enjoy the relative freedom of being away at school. It was a mini-escape and she made sure to appreciate it.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality:
Zillah is a very responsible person. Growing up with Pippa and plenty of younger cousins meant that she was always in charge of something or someone, usually several someones, in fact. She developed a sense of responsibility early in life, when it became apparent that no one else was going to.

She is usually a very sarcastic person and not particularly friendly. The exception to this is when she feels that someone is being wronged or taken advantage of. She is very committed to protecting those that she perceives as being weak or outcasts. She will argue fiercely when she knows that she is right. She could argue, or “debate” as she calls it, with anyone for hours if she thinks there is a chance of changing their mind.

Zillah is very resentful of her family. She loves her mother dearly, and appreciates what they have done for her, but doesn’t really agree with their choices. Despite this, she is still bound by the feeling of duty they instilled in her from an early age, but finds it very burdensome.

Zillah is pretty bright and doesn't have much trouble with school, but lacks the dedication and drive to really excel. She isn’t especially proficient at any area of magic or academics. Her main talent is people. She is very good at reading people. This usually only serves to alienate her from those who would be her friends because she spends most of her time judging them.

Zillah is a bit of a loud mouth. She has a serious problem with thinking before she opens her mouth. If she doesn’t approve of something, everyone will hear about it. She is noticeably lacking in the subtlety that most of her family possesses. Her mother tells her she got that from the Finches and Chants and she better settle down if she doesn’t want to end up like her father.

Appearance:
Long dark hair, greenish-grey eyes, full mouth, heart-shaped face. Average height, slightly curvy figure. Rarely smiles.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Zillah jumped back, startled, as James rounded on her.  She flinched noticeably as he yelled at her.
"WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"
Her mouth moved wordlessly for a moment before she could summon words to answer him. Her first instinct was to yell back, but then she saw the tears collecting in his eyes.

He had made a spectacular failure at the match today.  Well, actually it wouldn't have been such a big deal if it hadn't been the shot that lost them the game.  It was easy to see why he'd be upset about it.  What do you say to someone in that position?  She could try to write it off or tell him that there'd be other years and matches, but Quidditch was a pretty big deal here and no one was likely to forget about the botched shot for a while.
Her face softened.

"I wasn't staring at you.  I mean, I don't think you're a loser. I was just on my way to the loo."

Poor kid.

"It's not your fault, you know...about the game.  Other people missed perfectly good shots, too, yours was just the last one."

Merlin, she probably wasn't helping any, really.  Probably best to just change the subject or shut up.
"I think I'm going to head up to the common room now, actually.  The noise is giving me a headache.  Do you want to walk with me?"
