Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name:
Her full name is Helena Ismene Floros. All three names are of Greek origin, and mean “bright one,” “knowledge,” and “green finch” respectively. More often than not she goes by Nellie, but is also occasionally called Lene, Lenie, and Lena.

Birthday:
Helena was born 13 March, 1943, making her a Pisces.

Hometown:
Greek by heritage, Helena was born and raised in Agios Nikolaos in Greece, though she frequently summered in France and eventually attended school there for a while.

Bloodline:
She comes from a traditional pureblood family.

Magical Strength (pick one):
Surprisingly, Helena has a unique talent for divination, widely regarded as one of the “wooliest” branches of magic.

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Much less surprisingly, given that Helena’s magic is rather feeble and transfiguration is one of the most difficult forms of magic, transfiguration is her weak point.

Year (pick two):
Ideally a third year, but fourth year is also acceptable.

Biography:
There were many attempts at a Floros heir before Helena.

None lived past infancy, if they even lived that long. Still, Demetrios and Olympia tried, because every pure blood family needed an heir and, more than that, they both desperately wanted a child. Time and time again, they would get their hopes up, only to have their hearts broken. Eventually, they stopped trying. Demetrios was fifty-two, Olympia forty-eight. They were too old to bear a child now, too gray, and if their babies didn’t survive when they were young and healthy, they certainly wouldn’t now. So, they let dust settle over the nursery, and tried not to grieve.

Helena was a miracle, and a complete accident. See, she was actually supposed to be one of a set—twins—and that fact alone was enough for Olympia and Demetrios to curb their tentative hopes. They were sure the babies would never survive, and sure enough, only minutes after being born two months too early, Halcyon Floros passed away. Helena Floros did not.

The first year was rough. Helena was tiny and weak, prone to sickness and colic. She didn’t walk until she was a year and a half old, didn’t talk until she was three. Every moment, the Floros were waiting for the other shoe to drop. But it never did. By the time she was five years old, Helena was happy and healthy as could be. She was her parents’ treasure, and there wasn’t a day that went by that they didn’t make sure she knew it. Naturally, that love helped Helena flourish in almost every respect.

Almost.

You see, Helena didn’t show signs of magic for years. Being an old pureblood couple, her parents were more than a little concerned. Squibs were rarely happy. Rejected and scorned by the magic world they’d grown up, but never quite able to fit into the muggle world either, they spent their entire lives adrift. That was not the future they wanted for their darling girl. They practiced with her endlessly, trying to coax out any magic they could. At first, it seemed to be all for naught.

When she was nine years old, Helena’s mother was teaching her how to read tea leaves, and Helena warned her that her father was going to be in an accident the next week, and he should be careful. Not even a week later, her father took a nasty fall off his broom when it malfunctioned, and had to be rushed to the hospital. Her parents were ecstatic; Helena had magic!

Initially, Helena attended Beauxbatons, as her mother had before her. While the school was wonderful, it simply wasn’t the right fit for Helena. Her magic had always been weak and she was struggling, so her parents allowed her to transfer to Hogwarts.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request:
Personally, I think Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff would be the best fit, but I could honestly rationalize her being in any of the houses, so whatever you think is most suiting!

Personality:
If Helena were to be described in a single word, it would likely be "caring." With a golden heart and an open mind, she's always willing to provide a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. Her loyalty to those who find a place in her heart is admirable, even if it does sometimes blind them to their flaws. She always finds some way to show her adoration, whether it's through a warm hug when one is needed or a good laugh provided when sadness seems to be taking over. Possessing an optimistic nature and an uncanny ability to find the bright side in almost any situation, she's good at spreading the hope she seems to always possess onto those around her. Helena has a huge soft spot for anything smaller and weaker than herself, and with her huge imagination, has a knack for entertaining children, since she’s able to come up with wild stories and fun games on the spot. Because of these traits, combined with her playful demeanor, light sense of humor and innocent disposition, she's garnered a reputation among those that know her well as being a complete sweetheart.

It’s the “getting to know her” part that’s the problem.

After all the children they had lost, her parents were incredibly protective. They didn’t want her roughhousing with other children, or going over to anyone else’s house. They were terrified of leaving her wellbeing to fate, and so they coddled her, never letting her out of their sight and subsequently never giving her the chance to spread her wings. As a result, despite being overwhelmingly kind and positive once she’s close to someone, Helena is cripplingly shy and struggles to make friends. She lacks confidence in her social abilities, and her insecurity is blatantly clear when she tries to reach out to others. That doubt certainly isn’t helped by her embarrassment over her heavy Greek accent and self-proclaimed “complete lack of any sort of magic ability.” While she has discovered a natural affinity for divination, most of her other attempts at magic tend to fail and fizzle out. This only makes her even more apprehensive about interacting with other magical children, for fear that they’ll be miles ahead of her and she’ll be mocked for falling behind.

In short, imagine a faun riddled with anxiety. That faun is Helena.

Appearance:
Carrying on the faun metaphor, it’s no wonder that a baby deer is the animal Helena is most commonly compared to. She’s tall for her age, standing at five feet and five inches, with a slender physique and long, bony limbs that she often trips over. Her face is narrow, set with a button nose and pink lips, and her eyes are wide, round, and brown, framed by long eyelashes. Her skin is rather fair, cheeks naturally rosy, and while mostly blemishless, she does consistently have tiny abrasions on her fingers due to having a tendency to pick at her skin when she’s nervous. Dark brown in color and soft to the touch, she keeps her hair cropped to the nape of her neck, despite her mother’s griping about how lovely she’d look with long locks.

Option 2
That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Helena was going to be late again. It seemed to be absolutely impossible for her to keep track of time these days, when there was such an endless expanse of grounds to explore. Her parents had always let her roam and play in the gardens, but as lovely as they were, they weren’t as full as life as the Hogwarts grounds. She had never seen so many people in one place before; her parents weren’t the type to host parties, and they certainly weren’t the type to let her attend any. Even at Beauxbatons, the students tended to gather in small groups rather than large crowds. Though she wouldn’t admit it, Helena had become a bit of a people watcher in her weeks at Hogwarts.

It wasn’t as though she was spying on anyone. She wasn’t eavesdropping, or taking notes. Rather, she’d sit herself at the top of a hill, and just watch the comings and goings of the people below her. It was interesting, just watching how they interacted with each other.

Helena winced. It sounded awfully creepy put that way, she supposed, but she could never seem to muster the confidence to actually interject herself into their social groups, or even their conversations. A passive watcher was all she could bring herself to be, and she was going to have to make peace with that. She rounded the corner, walking briskly in the hope that she could still make it to Transfiguration on time despite getting caught up with her people watching, and paused. There was a boy, older than her, on his hands and knees in the flowers. She quirked her head to the side, curious, only to immediately turn scarlet when the boy turned and caught her staring.

“Sorry,” she squeaked, already beginning to fiddle with her hands, and turned to go. She hesitated, and then turned back around, mustering every scrap of courage she could find. “Did--Did you lose something? Would you like any help?”

Hi Helena, and welcome to the site!

Your application looks great so far, there's just one thing we'll need you to edit before we can get you accepted.

In your biography, you write:
Quote
When she was nine years old, Helena’s mother was teaching her how to read tea leaves, and Helena warned her that her father was going to be in an accident the next week, and he should be careful. Not even a week later, her father took a nasty fall off his broom when it malfunctioned, and had to be rushed to the hospital.

This is pretty powerful magic for a child -- according to our magical rules, it's equivalent to at least a N.E.W.T. student. Whilst magic in children can be powerful, it's also a lot more volatile and less controlled than comes across in Helena's display of it, so you'll need to edit the display of magic to be more in line with this. You could change it to something like Helena having a sudden and very strong fear about her father leaving, but being unable to explain why, for example. Removing the smaller details (e.g. it being an accident and occurring next week) would make it more plausible.

Once you've made the required change, please repost your entire revised application below, and we'll be more than happy to take another look. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact myself or another administrator. Thanks!

Of course, thank you for letting me know! I know this is kind of silly, but I can’t find the button that will allow me to edit the original post. As soon as I do, I’ll make the necessary changes!

Thank you! You won’t be able to edit your original post (it makes it harder for us to track when changes have been made, so the option isn’t available), but you should be able to quote it (envelope button with a pencil in the corner), make the changes, and then post it as a new reply. Let me know if you need more help with it!

Her parents were ecstatic; though it hadn’t been a prediction, had only been vague sense, it was still divination. Helena had magic!
