Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Suki Kaboyashi

Birthday: 14 May 1943

Hometown: Osaka, Japan

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): 1st or 2nd

Biography: She awoke with a start, covered in cold, damp sweat.  The dream had happened again.  Suki tried to wash the memories away by taking a swig of water from the glass next to her bed.  She hated the dream.  The dream took her back in time, to a time in her life where, in that moment, she had no idea what was going on as she was just a tot, but years on, she had gathered the significance of it.

There were feet.  Feet everywhere.  The men wore black suits, the women wore black dresses and some were even clad in kimonos.  The fragrant smell of incense burned.  It burned everywhere, throughout the room.  And then someone picked her up.  And she could see her.  At the front of the room.

“Mama!”  She cried happily.  Suki had not seen her mother in many days and the woman’s sleeping face brought happiness to the young child.  But the woman’s form never moved and the incense burned on and on.  “Mama!”  She shrieked louder until the child was removed from that room altogether by her nanny.  Even her nanny wore a black kimono today.

That was the last time she saw her mother’s face.  Her mother’s dead face.  As her father was a very prominent muggle and magical relations politician at the time, he was popular amongst both walks of life.  His wife’s sudden and unexpected passing was attended in droves by colleagues and friends alike.

Suki looked around her darkened bedroom.  Her mother was not there.  And she had no power over the dreams that had haunted her practically since the day her mother had died.  Her father was ridiculously wealthy and though he’d taken some time off to grieve, he only threw himself that much more into work.

His daughter had the best nannies, the best tutors, the best clothes, the best everything.  Except the best parents.  One was dead and the other might as well be considering how little she saw of him.

The bedroom was minimally decorated, a few stylish pictures on the walls whose occupants waved or dozed.  She checked her alarm clock.  It was 2:33 in the morning.

Turning back over in bed, the loneliest little girl fell back into a dreamless sleep.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: You guys decide to which house she belongs!  (Though I think she may fit somewhat into Ravenclaw)

Personality: Suki is mostly cheerful though she has her dark days.  As she has been tutored all her life, she hasn’t had the chance for much interaction with other kids her own age, so she will probably be shy and timid at first but very quick to open up to new people.  Considering that she grew up in Japan with a rigid father and rigid nannies and tutors, she is quick to respect her elders and this even includes students who are just older than her as this is what has been pounded into her head for 11 years.

Her display of respect is a bow at the waist, only slightly so for peers and deeper for teachers, deepest for the headmaster.  She acknowledges tiny things by nodding her head once to show that she has absorbed the information.  If she shakes hands, she will not grasp the proffered hand very tightly at all and will not make eye contact.

She is quite bookish.  Suki enjoys escaping into a book when things feel overwhelming or lonely.  And as she is bookish and reads many books per week, she is also rather intelligent.  She knows four languages fluently: Japanese and English she grew up speaking and then she taught herself Spanish and German.

Suki loves to learn and had three tutors all teaching her different things before her father decided she could go to a prestigious school such as Hogwarts.  And even though she is a small child, she will blow you away with her knowledge, demeanor and eventually, her personality.

Appearance: Suki is of shorter stature, standing about four feet and two inches.  She has not really hit any growth spurts yet.  However, she is full-blooded Japanese and they tend to average a few inches shorter.  Her father always mentioned how her mother was short so it sounds like Suki may end up being on the shorter end of things anyway.  She is a healthy weight leaning towards the thin end of things.

She has a heart-shaped face, thin pink lips, a small button nose and almond shaped black eyes.  Her long black hair feels as though it is made of silk.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Response:

Suki was in an entirely new part of the world.  Despite being raised learning English, she had never traveled to a part of the world that used the language all the time.  She loved listening to their exotic accents when they spoke.  They sounded lovely and chipper all of the time.  Having a new building that was rather large to now explore, Suki found herself in the dungeons today, wandering around the dank, damp corridors.

And then, a whisper.  Then, again, an even louder echo as someone who sounded frightened asked for an Emma Birch.  Suki knew no Emma Birch but she popped her tiny frame out from behind another corridor corner to find the source of the shouts.

Why, it was another young girl, just like her!  Someone not Japanese, of course, but a blonde girl.  But they were almost one in the same.

“I am not Emma but I am Suki.”  She said.  “Sorry if I scared you.”  She confessed to the other person in the corridor.  She wasn’t sure if the other girl was going to admit to having been frightened, if she had truly been scared by the sound of Suki milling about in the other corridor in the first place, but she hoped that this apology might lead to her first friend in this new place.

Head of Ravenclaw
schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
and I have to sit down for a while
