“Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.”
-   Pablo Picasso

There was a Before, and there was an After.

Elias split his life into these two distinct sections, one of which defined him, and the other a constant reminder of what could have been. The Before consisted of seven idyllic years spent chasing cats on his grandparents’ farm and watching the great church bell toll in the village square of his hometown, Guernica. Soft cow’s cheese and sour cherry jam, bitter peppers stuffed with salted cod, mouthwatering potato tortillas- these were all relics from Before, wonderful tastes and smells that his memory could never quite recreate. Guernica was a small town, but one full of life and culture and creation- to the little Elias, it held all the marvels of the world and more.

On the farm his grandparents owned several miles outside of the town, Elias was taught the skills he would need later in life; Papi, his father’s father, taught him farmer’s secrets- how to work the land, what crops to grow and when- as well as Spanish. Amatxi, his father’s mother, showed him magic and taught him her own mother tongue, Basque. The stories she told about his ancestors, all brave wizards and kind witches, fascinated him, and he spent hours sitting on her knees listening to her weave tales in that strange, enchanting language.

Thus the first seven years if his life passed by. In 1936 the right-wing political party announced a pronunciamento, a declaration of opposition, and Spain was thrown into a civil war. This was an event completely irrelevant to six-year-old Elias, who was more concerned with learning the alphabet than by the fascist leader, Francisco Franco, who was trying to take control from the Spanish government.

But Franco had some plans that even Elias couldn’t ignore. On April 26th, 1937, German forces led an air raid on Guernica, decimating the town and killing hundreds. In a single morning, the only place Elias had ever known was reduced to ashes and ruins, an image that would haunt his dreams for years to come.

April 26th, 1937 was not the last disaster the Irigoyens would face. With their hometown in ruins, they left Spain and trekked north, passing the border into France. Elias’ father sought work where he could find it: in the magical community when his luck was high, but often in muggle factories and ports. His wife and children followed him from city to city; first Marseilles, then up to Lyon and Nantes, and finally Paris. Disaster struck again when Elias’ father disappeared with a witch from Madrid, and Mrs. Irigoyen was left to care for three children with the small salary she made bussing tables at a café.

Elias himself was absent for his father’s vanishing act; earlier that year, he had enrolled at Beauxbatons Academy to begin his study of the magical arts. The tuition made a large dent in his mother’s meager savings, but he made up what he could by purchasing second hand materials and working small jobs during summer months.

After the end of the War, good news came at last. Elias’ aunt, newly married to an Irishman, offered her sister a secretarial job at her husband’s new firm. In the summer of 1945, the Irigoyen family packed their bags, crossed the Channel, and settled in Dublin, ready to start a new chapter in their lives.

House Request: anything goes!

Personality:

Elias’s magnetic personality alone makes him a natural leader, along with his easy confidence and proud bearing He sees the world in black and white; rights and wrongs, but no in between. This gives him a strong (and often imperfect) sense of justice. He’s not quick to judge, but first impressions last on him and when he dislikes someone, it’s with a passion. His passion for politics is unusual for someone his age, but his youth and inexperience blinds him to the more subtle nuances behind the happenings of WWII.

Appearance:

Elias was heir to his family’s farm, and he looks the part. Although he isn’t particularly tall, he’s well built with broad shoulders and a muscular frame. He lacks anything resembling elegance in both his appearance and his demeanor: he keeps his hair unfashionably long and dresses only in the cheapest of clothing.

Option I:

Thump.

The hardcover binding of Aristotle’s Politics made a funny noise when it came into contact with Elias’ forehead. It was a hollow, flat sound that nonetheless echoed off of the stone walls of the dungeon.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Elias was drafting an essay, and the dungeons were the only place quiet enough to hear himself think. He was in self-exile from the comfortable common room, which was overflowing with teenage energy; more than one snapping Frisbee had sailed frighteningly close to his precious draft. After fifteen minutes of headache-inducing din, he’d picked up his book bag and escaped to the cool silence of the lower floors.

The change of scenery hadn’t helped, though. The ground around him was littered with discarded papers, blackened with scribbles and ink stains. Elias barely held in a groan of frustration, for no matter how many times he outlined his essay, the final product was always rubbish. Either it was too wordy, or lacked depth; some drafts were childish, the next one pretentious.

He didn’t know why he wrote; after all, his friends liked Quidditch, or dueling. Elias, on the other hand, enjoyed politics. In his fantasies, he printed his essays at his uncle’s press in Dublin and distributed them throughout Madrid, to the great joy of the oppressed citizens there. In reality, the essay would be filed away in the great leather portfolio that held his collection of penned manifestos and proclamations, left to gather dust at the bottom of his trunk. .

Organizing his thoughts on paper helped him think. His ideas and ideals were always clearer in the essays he wrote; the Republican Armed Forces, Franco’s party, were vilified with nasty words and dramatic accusations, while the Spanish people took the role of brave martyrs fearlessly standing up for their country. Everything became black and white, good or bad, which was how Elias liked it.

“H-h-hello?” came a voice from the darkness, causing Elias to jump. His quill slipped on the page, sending a spray of black ink across the paper.

“Dios mío!” started Elias, his hand on his racing heart. As his heart slowed down, he peered through the gloom and his eyes came to rest on a small girl.

“Hello! Is Emma Birch here?” she cried out, obviously terrified.

He had heard this name whispered in the hallways since the day he'd transferred; a ghost story about a murdered girl in the Hogwarts Castle, and he didn’t appreciate that the younger students were being told such nonsense. It seemed cruel to pointlessly terrify them, even as a joke. Elias stood up slowly, so as to not surprise her. With both hands up, he stepped towards her, an awkward smile dancing on his face.

“My name is Elias, not Emma,” he admitted. “But close enough.”
