Biography:

If she were to tell the story of herself, where would she begin? It kept her up at night, hounding away all the little sheep that would usher in sleep.

After sixteen years, it seems she should have been able to give an account of herself - of some sort, at least. That was what people were always telling her, anyway. “Just what do you think you’re doing, young lady!” and “What in the world were you thinking, ‘Mini!” and the popular favorite, “You explain yourself right now, Gemini Moon!”

( The last of which, really the first, she’d swear up and down had been uttered on the day of her birth and stuck ever since. )

Unfortunately, practice didn’t prove to make perfect. Not so far. And her first learned wisdom was that it rarely ever did.

The second was that lies could be just as perfect as the truth, but no better.

Because she knew what they wanted, of course. But that didn’t mean she felt compelled to give it. Not if it was all they wanted of her:

Gemini Moon. A halfblood; worse, motherless to boot - or maybe that was for the better.1

Her father, Aquarius Moon, was an unobtrusive2 toy maker whose successful contracts had finally lead to a neat little shop in Diagon Alley.3

Neither rich nor poor, the Moons made do.

1 Maman never held much truck with witches and wizards, from what she had been told. All the same, she figured it was a fact that she would have liked to have known her. At least a little bit.

2 (but wonderful! wonderful! wonderful!)

3 Well, not the Diagon Alley. But one of the little side streets with a name something like Horizont Alley or Vertic Alley. Somewhere off of Evensho Alley.

But she didn’t want that to be what she had to stay about herself. She wanted to be grand! Vast. Unknowable. All the words that jumbled together in her mouth, tangle-tied around her tongue, caught up in their own cleverness and all for naught, knotted so. The thoughts raced ahead and she chased after, hobbled. Inept. Or maybe only burdened by her aspirations.

For it was easier to define herself by what she wanted to be: like poetry, the sort as savory as a fresh cut apple, and laughter, of the kind that came from the bellows and rocked you until you were seasick. Temper like a tiger, a roar that swallowed the world in its quake! Strong as a storm, wild and rampant-whimmed. Genius like a lightning strike, or a blow to the face.

(Her Papa’s voice: “That’s no girl, ‘Mini, but a natural catastrophe.” “Yes, e x a c t l y!”)

A lonely thing, to measure herself by what she wasn’t.

So there she lay at night, preoccupied with sheep and dreams and the in-between, wishing she were the wolf in her thoughts but feeling more like the sheep: a little afraid, a little complacent, rushing headlong towards - towards -

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

They called this the dungeons for a reason.

The bag she carried weighed a ton. And, Gemini thought grimly, it was going to keep her shackled here forever. If she were lucky (which she probably wouldn’t be) they would find her remains by next term, withered away in some dank corner with no better companionship than P. U. Stunk and his ‘35 Theses On The Use Of Bezoars’. The rest of the four dozen books would be long gone – to a fate far, far more merciful.

Because the truth was, even faced with slow starvation, the thought of consuming Mr. Stunk was no more appetizing.

“If you don’t pass that exam,” she reminded herself, taking a moment to shoulder her burden a little better. Then two steps. Perseverance was key!  “You’re going to be in much–”

A third step, which listed dangerously sideways.

“– much–”

Her balance entered an acute angle of danger.

“– much wor- oh - oh ohonono!”

The rest of the shriek was muffled between cold stone and all the ignominious weight of her studies.

( Perhaps it was her fault for cramming before an exam, but this… this was way too literal. She didn’t deserve this. )

For another second she wallowed in her misery, fighting the temptation to whack her head against the wall several more times. Then, with a groan, she dumped the entire satchel – which, to be truthful, was so stuffed with texts as to be grossly deformed beyond anything resembling that definition – and began lugging it along in vindictive gusto.

“How! About! Th–”

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

“–at.”

Winded and startled to stillness, she peered down the hall. That… that had been a person? Right? More importantly… they hadn’t seen her, had they?

“H-hello?” Gemini called back, abandoning her bag to venture a little further down the corridor. The torches threw off no friendly glow, but she squared her (still aching) shoulders with determination. Cautiously, she peered around the bend. And once she saw Evangeline, brightened immediately. “Hello!”

As casually as possible (her shoulders!) she leaned further, and gave the girl a little wave. Along with a smile practically melting with relief... the intensity of which was a little uncomfortable, to be completely honest.

“There’s no - er , Birch here but could I - maybe? - could I get your help for just one quick minute-”

do you remember the twenty-first night of september?
love was changing the minds of pretenders while chasing the clouds away
our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing
as we danced in the night, remember how the stars stole the night away
