Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Eugenia Lowsley

Birthday: August 8, 1948

Hometown: London

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two):1st, 2nd

Biography:

Eugenia Lowsley, Genie to pretty much everyone, had never really known her father. It was not something that particularly bothered her, it was just a fact of life. For the longest time, she saw nothing out of the ordinary with her life, as she guessed most young children didn't now that she was mature at the ripe age of 11. Her mother was a nurse at St. Mungos, and her aunt occasionally visited between trips out of the country.

No one else, though she heard she might have second cousins somewhere.

Genie didn't mind though. She met others, in the park or at St. Mungos. Children like her, she was told, children of witches and wizards. It always surprised her to find out how different their lives were. One snot-nosed boy was a 'Pureblood,' who asked endlessly what her blood status was.

She didn't know. He kept asking. He then said she was better than her because of it. She kicked his shin. He fell over.

Not better than her at all.

Genie had been used to doing everything by hand. She had gone over to another friend's house who had two magical parents. It surprised her to see them use magic for almost everything. When she got home, she asked why they didn't use magic at home like everyone else.

Not everyone else. There are only a few witches and wizards in the world, and I'm not a very good witch.

Genie had met muggle children her age and had to do her hardest to not reveal the secrets that she held. Namely, magic. Her life seemed much like theirs, except they listened to different radio programs and played different games.

As she approached her eleventh birthday, Genie had been about as magical as a turnip. A very magical turnip, maybe, but a turnip none the less. It wasn't until she had dropped a teacup to the floor, only to have it freeze an inch above the ground, and from her outstretched hand, that she knew.

Her letter came the next day, like clockwork.

Option I:

The dungeons.

"Stay out of the dungeons, Genie." Her mother had said on the station. "Don't even think about finding the pool."

Eugenia Lowsley had, at the first possible moment, made her way into the dark catacombs that seemed to tunnel under the school. Not catacombs exactly: she had been to Paris once and seen them. These halls seemed to twist forever, and there was that damp, musty smell that seemed to cover everything.

Her fingers trailed against the wall, cool bricks prickling against the tips. Why anyone would ever live down here, she couldn't say.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The words seemed to rattle down the walls, bouncing this way and that. To her shame, she jumped, unable to keep her nerve. Genie gritted her teeth, clenching fists. Not out of fear, but frustration of having been spooked.

She turned to follow the voice, coming around the nearest bend to find herself face to face with a girl. Genie vaguely recognized her from that line of students in the sort, shuffling feet before the hat called out their year. To be honest, she couldn't really tell if she was one of her dormmates or not.

"No?" Her answer came as a question, as she bit her lip. "Who's Emma Birch, is she," her heart beat a little faster, a grin inching on her face, "a ghost?"

Ghosts were real, they haunted the castle, but discovering new ones felt like a small adventure. Scary, a little, but still an adventure.

Hi, Genie!

Your application looks great, there's just one thing you'll need to edit before we can get you accepted.

Genie's birth year is down as 1948, but this would make her ten, not eleven, by September 1958. Can you edit her birth year to 1947?

Once you've made the required change, please repost your entire revised application below, and we'll be more than happy to take another look. Thanks!

schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
