Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Edmund Whiteclaw

Birthday: 15 June 1947

Hometown: Tinworth, Cornwall, England

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two): 3rd or 4th

Biography:
The Whiteclaw family had been rather unusual for several years by the time Edmund came along, but it was all (mostly) by choice.

Percy Whiteclaw, defying the wishes of his father to marry someone of the house of Hufflepuff, the family tradition, married the charismatic Gryffindor Anne Cash.  Anne and Percy had three children: Alfred, Bennett, and Claire. All three children were remarkably like their parents when young, but each grew to be considerably different as they grew older, especially young Bennett. In his fourth year, Bennett saw around him many prejudices against anything concerning muggles and he couldn't say he agreed. He did his studying up on the seemingly strange people and thought to himself that there wasn't much of a difference between him and they other than his ability to perform magic.

Naturally, this thinking was unpopular.

However, Bennett's family supported their son's position. Percy lovingly told him that in all the experience he'd had with the Muggles that live around Tinworth, they'd been rather pleasant. But he also warned his son that there were many people in their communities that wouldn't agree with supporting muggles in any capacity. Bennett took the warning to heart, yet it changed nothing of his thoughts. Bennett graduated from Hogwarts a graduate of Ravenclaw (the first in his family for many a year to not find a home in Hufflepuff).

Like his father, Bennett elected to travel around Great Britain for a little while, taking in all that there was to see. Though he remained avidly curious about the muggles, his knowledge of the spots of trouble he could find himself in with the various social circles in the wizarding communities kept his curiosity mostly restricted to his busy brain. That is until on one particular trip through Wales, he met Rosemary Valencia, a muggle his same age. The two quickly fell and love and were married just two years later in May of 1972. The two had their first child, Esmerelda, in 1973.

Like the whole of the wizard community, the Whiteclaw family was caught in the time-warp. Bennett was horrified to discover that his new wife had not come with them. He was left to raise his daughter alone in 1937. Bennett, a typically irreverent figure, spiraled into depression, missing his wife more than he missed the life that he had once led. Percy worried for his son, noticing that Esmerelda wasn't getting the life she so deserved. Percy convinced his son to attempt to find someone else that brought him happiness which was easier said than done. However, as time went along the extent of the memories began to fade from their minds. Bennett felt a sting that he didn't know the source of.

The time-warp had thrust everyone into the war and Bennett was for the first time in his life uncomfortable with muggles. Seeing the atrocities they were capable of committing, he questioned whether or not they were worth sympathies, a change that Percy found to be particularly unsettling. However, despite his newly formed doubts, Bennett became smitten with a muggle woman whom he met rather by accident on the beach. Her name was Casandra Blackwood and was smitten with her long brown hair and sky blue eyes.

Bennett found himself marrying once more in 1945. Two years later, Bennett welcomed his second child with his younger wife. Naming the child Edmund, the couple vowed to bring no more children into the world, both having become increasingly more jaded with the things that they saw around them.

Edmund spent the first ten years of his at home as happy as a child could be. His parents worked to give him the best home they could and he was appreciative. He never quite developed a strong relationship with his sister, however. He felt that they didn't share much in common, especially in their appearance. He had no idea that his sister was only his half sister or that his father had lived practically another life before he came along. But then again, nobody else by this time had any idea either.

When Edmund's Hogwarts letter arrived, his family was ecstatic, all except for Bennett who was still wrestling with complex feelings that he couldn't explain. It was around this time that Edmund's father caught wind of the time-warp theory. Though Bennett knew the absurdity of it, he seemed to take a particular interest in the idea despite the social stigma surrounding the theory. Ed at first was resistant but shortly before leaving for school, he too developed an interest in the theory, albeit for different reasons than his father.

Edmund made the trip to Platform 9 3/4 with all of his classmates and made the journey to Hogwarts for his first year of school (the 1958-1959 term). Edmund's first year was marked by the horrors of the monster. Being a first year, the professors and other students did what they could to shelter him and his friends from the harsher realities of what was happening. Though rumors swirled, there wasn't much that could be confirmed to Edmund and the other first years.

As the year continued and more and more events unfolded, Edmund reckoned he could use a distraction. He took up a particular interest in history and would spend long hours of his free time reading about the past witches and wizards who'd made the very things he was learning about in class possible. When he was allowed to, he searched the library shelves for any and every book that he could get his hands on, even if the topics weren't in his immediate future class wise.

He even took to asking the professors about the various events he'd read about when they weren't occupied with the goings on of the school, trying to understand the complexities of his world's history. It was in the midst of this first year that his mother wrote to him with news that Bennett was closing himself off slowly. She believed that Bennett's growing fascination with the time-warp theory was planting false ideas in his head and that he was only so interested as it offered some sort of explanation for things and feelings that he couldn't explain.

Despite himself, Edmund too began to wonder about the theory, although the lack of information regarding it outside a sphere of guessing and inconsistent musings of the few true believers deterred him from accepting anything as fact. He worried deeply for his father and feared that this dead end theory was indeed steering him in the wrong direction.

When Edmund returned home for the summer holidays, he made an attempt to speak with his father about all of his experiences, but he didn't seem to be too interested. His father would occasionally try to explain the theory to Edmund and why he found it so fascinating, but Edmund began to resist. Bennett however explained to his son the dark hole he himself had fallen down without explanation had to have an answer. Edmund, frustrated, proclaimed that the only answer was that Bennet was depressed about the very real war outside like everyone else was and that he just didn't talk about it until everyone around him had moved on.

Much to Bennett's surprise, Esmerelda agreed with Edmund, telling her father that she too felt that these feelings were hold overs from having never discussed his natural fears of the world with anyone. Bennett, afraid of spiraling back into the place he was in before meeting Casandra, denied both of his children's assessments and gave them a cold shoulder. Frustrated, Edmund and Esmerelda didn't speak to their father much that summer in return.

Edmund returned to Hogwarts for his second year (the 1959-1960 term) and there wasn't much of considerable note to distract Edmund from his anger at his father's insistence to not see reason. Knowing that Edmund would likely talk about his actions, Bennett wrote warning not to mention to anyone that he saw some truth in the wild theory. These owls were supported with owls from Casandra who reminded Edmund that strangers would see Bennett as a stranger than they did.

His lack of distraction changed shortly however. This was the year that Edmund became aware of the negative connotations of his blood status. Though he was far, far better off than the Muggleborns, he knew that there were some students in the school who took issue with his mother being a muggle. Bennett's fascination with the muggles had become known to a particular group of bullies and this was often used against Edmund to his great annoyance. Edmund longed to be able to look at his father for some support, but he knew that if these other kids knew what else Bennett was up to, it'd only grow more severe.

Over the winter holidays, Percy passed away unexpectedly. Hurt by the loss of his father, Bennet became particularly disagreeable. Edmund, Esmerelda, and even Casandra grew increasingly more frustrated with Bennet, creating high tensions within the family. Edmund didn't even say goodbye to his father when he left to return to Hogwarts. His mother wrote him just hours later to explain that this particular action reduced the clearly beaten down and emotionally exhausted Bennett to tears.

Guilty for his lack of understanding and considering the fact that his father already was struggling with emotions he couldn't explain, Edmund wrote to his father and explained that if he didn't look at his father as crazy and that he understood why he found some sort of hypothetical answer in such a theory, but he also begged his father to listen to his better judgement. Bennett in return sent Edmund a photo of Percy when he was younger, a simple indication that he'd managed to find some catharsis.

Upon the conclusion of his second year, Edmund returned home and the first thing he did upon arrival to the station was take his father in a loving embrace. Bennett surprised him with a promise to no longer speak about any sort of wild theories and to make his best attempt to be more present in his son's life.

Edmund discovered that while he was at school, his father had done a serious assessment of his priorities. Percy's death had made him realize that there was only so much time for everyone to live and that he was wasting his time obsessing over something that he couldn't even begin to prove legitimate. Edmund's relationship with his father improved dramatically, although every once in awhile he would catch Bennett listening to some of the dedicated theorists, few as they may be.

Edmund meanwhile goes to great lengths to ensure that those moments remain within the walls of his home and don't make their way to the knowledge of his classmates at school.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality:
Edmund is in many ways a perfect amalgamation of his grandfather, father, and his mother. He possesses his grandfather's charm, his father's determination, and his mother's resourcefulness.

Edmund's charm is something he isn't entirely aware of. He seems to know just what to say at just the right moment. His charm doesn't ooze smarminess like some people's tend to, but instead it radiates his kindness. Edmund believes that a simple word of kindness or encouragement carries more magic than all of Hogwarts and he lets that belief guide his hand and heart whenever he can.

Edmund is extraordinarily dedicated when he comes upon something he loves. If he doesn't hold particular interest in something then he may not always put his best foot forward, but he will at the least give something a go. But his determination manifests most into the things that most interest him. This has made him a particularly hands on student and an ambitious one at that. He hopes to stand out to his professors and show his enthusiasm in the classroom.

His resourcefulness is what can sometimes get him into trouble. Edmund is sometimes too clever for his own good. He doesn't mean to, but he often comes up with solutions to his problems that toe the line between creative and just a plain breaking of the rules. As he's gotten older, he's more mindful of himself but it really doesn't stop him from getting creative to fix an issue every now and again.

He holds a particular disdain in his heart for discrimination. He disagrees with the widespread feelings on muggles, and he will speak up when he can. However Bennett encouraged him to not aim to pick fights with bigots as it could end up doing more harm than good. Still, he will defend those that need it when he can.

Appearance:
Edmund's appearance is handsome and he chalks it up to being blessed with the best features of both parents. Atop his head is his father's dirty blond hair. Kept a tad bit longer and considerable bit messy, it's one of his defining features. He shares his mother's sky blue eyes, his favorite feature and, as he's discovered over the years, a natural conversation starter. He shares his height with the men and his family. Standing currently at 5'11", he expects to cross the 6 foot mark by his graduation and expects to at least match Bennett and Percy's 6'2" by the time he finishes his growing in his twenties. Edmund dresses casually, not particularly interested in anything showy. He begrudgingly wears his robes proper when professors are watching but is known to loosen his tie when eyes aren't on him.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Response:

Edmund rather enjoyed lounging outside on the lawn when he had the time. On weekends in the sunnier months of the year, he was often joined by other students passing the time on the grounds. This was a particularly busy day with students from all houses out and about. Some read by the lake, some horsed around on the greens, some read in the branches of the trees. Edmund however had taken to sunning himself by the gardens.

He lay on one of his robes like a blanket, his arms crossed behind his head. He was enjoying the sun when he suddenly felt four scratchy feet dash across chest, quickly followed by rustling in the flower beds behind him. Before he could sit up, dirt was kicked up in a great whirlwind from the flower beds, landing with a crash directly on Edmund's face and chest. He sat up quickly, turning in time to see a student dashing through the flowers chasing after something.

Edmund stood and took off to follow, wondering whether it was trouble or just a bit of rough housing. He saw the other student stop, a boy who looked a bit older, and heave a great sneeze out onto the poor, unsuspecting flowers below him. Wiping the excess from his nose, the boy caught a glimpse of Edmund, not appearing too happy to see him. Despite himself, Edmund laughed at the boy's words.

"I don't reckon it's very polite to throw dirt over a poor underclassman either but..." He gestured down to his shirt. "Anyway, it seems that you're the one who needs a bit of help. Would you happen to be missing a rat?" Edmund explained that a rat had run across his chest moments before the dirt landed on him and he could tell by the look in the older boy's eyes that he was indeed without the company of his four legged companion.

Edmund smiled and said "Come on, he couldn't have gotten too far." The boys stood and took off in the direction that the rat had been running.

Edmund spent the first ten years of his life ignorant to the time-warp. He had no idea that his sister was only his half sister or that his father had lived practically another life before he came along. Only when Edmund's Hogwarts letter arrived did his father explain to him in detail everything that had happened. Edmund's mind was stretched thin by the story. It was that very evening that his mind began to travel to wherever Rosemary was in time. Though he did not share her blood, he often thought of her.

Strangely enough though, the attacks at the school weren't what was most prevalent in his mind.

As the year continued and more and more events unfolded, Edmund reckoned he could use a distraction. Turning over the story his father had told him, Edmund became close to obsessed with the time-warp. When he was allowed to, he searched the library shelves for any and every book that he could get his hands on concerning the event and he plotted down notes and facts in a personal journal. He even took to asking the professors about the event when they weren't occupied with the goings on of the school, trying to understand the complexities of the event. Edmund's friends grew a bit concerned with the obsession, with one of his housemates telling him to stop obsessing over a woman who he wasn't actually related to.

When Edmund returned home for the summer holidays, his father echoed these sentiments. His father sat him down and explained that dwelling on Rosemary would do Edmund no good. He explained to his son the dark hole he himself had fallen down devoting his life to a woman he'd never see again and said that he didn't want the same thing to happen to his son. Edmund, frustrated, proclaimed that he wouldn't have to obsesses of the woman and the time-warp if he could at the very least know something about the mother of his sister.

Much to Bennett's surprise, Esmerelda agreed with Edmund, telling her father that she too wanted to know more about her mother. Bennett, afraid of spiraling back into the place he was in before meeting Casandra, denied both of his children any information about Rosemary other than her name and a limited range of photographs of her. Frustrated, Edmund and Esmerelda didn't speak to their father much that summer.

Edmund returned to Hogwarts for his second year (the 1959-1960 term) and there wasn't much of considerable note to distract Edmund from his research. Knowing that Edmund would be using the wealth of knowledge at the school to uncover details, Bennett sent owls twice a week warning his son not to. These owls were contrasted with owls from Casandra who, for the first time, openly encouraged Edmund's curiosity about the woman who first held his father's heart and had mothered his sister.

It was this year though, the year that produced few distractions, that Edmund became aware of the negative connotations of his blood status. Though he was far, far better off than the Muggleborns, he knew that there were some students in the school who took issue with his mother being a muggle. Bennett's fascination with the muggles had become known to a particular group of bullies and this was often used against Edmund to his great annoyance.

Guilty for his own actions and considering the fact that his father struggled with the memory of Rosemary far more than he ever could, Edmund wrote to his father and explained that if he so wished, he'd suspend his research on the time-warp and no longer ask him about Rosemary. Bennett in return sent Edmund a photo he'd never seen of Rosemary. Edmund's friends still didn't understand why he was so interested in a woman that he shared no blood nor time with.

Upon the conclusion of his second year, Edmund returned home and the first thing he did upon arrival to the station was take his father in a loving embrace. Bennett surprised him with a promise to tell both him and Esmerelda more about Rosemary over the summer. But he first asked Edmund a question. He said "I know why Esmeralda wants to know more...it's her mother. But why do you?"

Edmund turned the question over in his mind for a moment before replying "Because she means something to you, meant something to grandfather, and in means something to Esmerelda. I don't share her blood...but I'd at least like to share her memory."
