Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Wolf Märchen

Birthday: 30 Oct, 1931

Hometown:
Black Forest - Baden-Württemberg, Germany (originated)
Swansea, Wales (migrated, c. 1938)

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): 6th or 7th

Biography:
Once upon a time, there was a boy who was born under a ghastly, cursed moon. And, unsuited for beautiful words, his story wrote itself in language primordial: bruised knuckles, wooden splinters and bleached bone, the delicate veils torn from ladybug wings, fragile things crushed beneath the heel of his hand.

(Curb it, she tells him, That beast inside you, that you let walk in your skin.)

Toothsome dreams, with big, beguiling eyes and pliant skin. Prayers for solace, all for naught. He burned. He hungered. He was doomed, to a frenzied nature unfurling slowly across the years in one long, ragged howl; a lacerating war cry. The boy reveled in this savagery. And dreamed of savage revelation.

(Whose afraid, whose afraid? I’m not, she says.)

This boy, untamed though he remained, did learn. Aconite, belladonna, and cicuta made for an early alphabet, alongside digitalis, elderberry and flaxseed. Root and stem by rote, worked deep as the dirt beneath his fingernails. Wood paths long wandered, and all the secret ways down which one might stray. The boy walked with the wild. He hunted.

(You're a liar, she declares. Words heavy as stones in his empty belly, that hunger. But I'm not frightened of you.)

The ways of men, as the tales tell us, are the most beastly of all, for they're the only creatures whose dreams birth monsters and terrible myth. This, the boy never needed to be taught. And other children, those trespassers who he could not frighten, he fought. But from what cannot be fought one must flee, and so the boy crossed an ocean from the feral forest where he lived, to the shores of Swansea.

(Cry wolf, he taunts, And see what happens. The line of trees recede, planes drone overhead.

Wolf, she says. And smiles.)

Wolf Märchen was born the only son of Éponine & Drake Märchen, who made their home in the secluded wilds of Germany's Black Forest. On the border of Germany and France, these gifted herbalists avoided the increasing turmoil of Muggle politics — as well as most of their neighbors, either of Muggle or Wizarding descent. A small, secluded but nonetheless happy family, Wolf's childhood companions numbered mainly his cousins: Red Märchen, whose family also resided in Germany, as well as Briar & Rose Märchen, who would occasionally visit from their home in Britain.
With the outbreak of war looming, and the power of the Hexenreich rising, the troublesome Wolf (already given to unfortunate scrapes with local playmates) and docile Red were shepherded to the safe-keeping of their extended family.
Upon arrival in Wales, it was there the remainder of his childhood would pass, as it was decided several years of homeschooling would be necessary to aid in the boy's acclimation to Britain. This process involved its customary number of mishaps, tribulations, and mischief alongside Red and their new companion, Swan Märchen. While little loyalty to his homeland remains, the thorns of his nature were less carefully pruned, and Wolf remains instinctively distrustful of most new acquaintances.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Gryffindor or Ravenclaw

Personality: A boy in beast's clothing — which, depending on whom you ask, are relatively the same things. Solitary by nature, yet naturally prone to go sniffing out trouble. Nor above beguiling the sheep he seeks, or being an equal victim to errors born of his own brash and bristling bravado.

For even wily wolves may be led astray.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Please reply to one of the Sample Roleplays below.

Breakfast was a morning interlude measured by as long he could stand being under a fake sky. Which was to say, an altogether short one.

With a pilfered pasty in hand, Wolf had slipped from the Great Hall. Sleep was shaken off easier than restlessness, and so he'd gone wondering – unmindful of nosy teachers or a number of pointed, painterly stares from the portraits along the walls. For the latter, this wasn't quite true; he replied in kind with the most obnoxious leer he could compose this early in the morning, and took particular pleasure in the crumbs he left on the floor.

This was a habitual irreverence, lasting as long as it took him to get out the doors. Beyond them, the morning narrowed once again: less magical so much a matter of marrow running in ferine tides, which always lead him to the same unlikely place. Outside the castle walls he would, begrudgingly, indulge in an appreciation of magic – if only the sort found in flowering buds and the thorns of strange plants. An acquiesce made only, perhaps, by the solitary fact that there was no one else to see.

Because this morning of mornings, Wolf had two things: company – and the conclusion that there was absolutely nothing magical about it.

"Can I help you with something?"

He gave the boy a look as dirty as his silt-stained hands, which made sharp gestures towards the trampled flowers.

"It is not polite to stare."

The gesture was shortly emphasized by a rather rude sound of derision. His hostile stare never unfixed from Hugh, but from a corner of his eye he spied one of the broken flowers on the soil near his foot. With a deft movement, Wolf hooked the toe of one shoe under it and kicked it the boy's direction.

"Quit being so snotty."

Teeth flashed in a strange twist of scowl and smirk. Dusting his dirty hands on his pants, his head tilted to an angle encompassing the ruined row of flora. It was possible to interpret faint admiration in the raise of his brows.

"... what were you even doing?"

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:

The horizon stretched under the sun's shrewd gaze, coloring its canvas in unusually attractive colors, most unlike the typical, dreary weather. There was even a touch of warmth to it, settling like inquisitive fingers on the back of his neck and shoulders. Both of which were hunched, head craned towards the sky – as if he resented even the suggestion of an intrusion.

"John, I said wait up!"

Eyes rolled slightly at this little shriek, but otherwise Wolf ignored the little girl who was, quite literally, far below his attention.  This was fixed on the line of brooms streaking across the sky, which he studied from where he sat in shadowed, squint-eyed skepticism.

Flying had never particularly been his forte, given the proliferation of canopy where he'd grown up. And just thinking about being that high off the ground...  his nerves balked, bristling with a dread more instinctual than fear, but so akin as to, perversely, fascinate him in the same breath. For long minutes, he fought silently to categorize it.

Unnatural, he finally decided, to have your feet so off the ground. Fingers curled into the grass, feeling the dirt swell coolly against his knuckles. Teeth grit, a crueler bite into the stem caught between his teeth. In heightened consideration, the tilt of his head sharpened its angle. At least that bloody high.

He was almost tempted to—

"You!"

Scowling, the level of his gaze flattened, now overcast with umbrage. What on earth had given her the impression he'd be a good volunteer to pick out?

Perhaps she had realized her mistake, for her tone seemed to soften.

"...Do you want to play?"

His brows raised, fingers with mottled bruises along their backs coming to pluck the blade of grass from between his teeth. All the better to smile at her.

"Sure."

The line of his shoulders and neck gone taunt, and the pause that followed was tense, almost baited. He moved slowly, knotted limbs pulling themselves apart. Legs unfolding, back straightening. An arm stretching...

"Let's play."

Abruptly, he made to snatch for her broom.

Märchen
children of the lists of myths
a germanic halfblood clan
c. 1600
Genesis
this is the beginning and the end. the rise and the fall.
our gait will begin its saunter at the source, when the infant learns to crawl.

A long, long time ago in a land far, far away there was a prince — or was it, maybe, a princess? — and a spell, meant to be broken by true love's first kiss before a clock struck midnight. Or... was it the last petal fallen of a fading flower, and the truth of enchantment revealed in a magic mirror? The tapestry of our fable has worn thin over time, and the threads tangle so. None of which, in the end, really matters, because the enchanted dreamer was never awoken, the castle fell, a dragon took up in the moat, and wondrous riches became ruin. But the curse (and the cursed) remained.

Though what that was, now, none could really say; for the pages of this tale are scorched, touched by the fires of the witch hunts of medieval Europe. And what hasn't been lost is faded, diluted much like their once distinguished vein of wizarding blood. A diaspora, that no doubt contributed to their inter-marrying with muggles, the practice of which is now quite commonplace within the Family.

It is commonly believed that the appendixes of their beginnings can be traced to Eastern Germany or further Slavic regions, but the living blood of its branches has long since rooted out westward, stretching across the Continent as far as Britain and France.

With, in many cases, so little to their name, coupled with their matrimonial misalliances (in more pedantic, pureblood eyes) they're a family whose status has met with mixed reactions within Wizarding society — leading to what is a very diverse, saturated and fragmented family. The core of kin so long since diluted, the most common source of connection is of "cousins" (of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. degree).

Nonetheless, the head of this Family (one S. Märchen) manages to keep in contact with various chapters, and string together an amorphous series of footnotes into something more cohesive. With one stipulation: a story can never truly change its name, for by any other word is that its nature, and to be recognized by the Family, one must forever keep the surname Märchen.

PLEASE READ: We request that any player wishing to adopt a family member prove activity by having been on site for at least one (1) IC term. You may place a "claim" for the adoptable you're interested in in the thread below, but it's preferred that you prepare the character application before creating an account for them. The nature of the Family is such that there's ample room for you to have freedom when it comes to the background of your character, and it's not required you strictly adhere to the prompts given with any adoptable. If you have any questions, please PM Wolf Märchen & Swan Märchen.

REGARDING THE FAMILY TREE: View here. A rough estimation of each family unit's relation to each other (unless otherwise stated) can also be sketched out as follows, with Briar as our static point:
1st Cousins: Briar, Rose, Snow
2nd Cousins: Swan
3rd Cousins: Cinders, Pearce, Goldie, Goose, Red, Wolf

Basically, you can gauge the degrees of cousins by how far back they share grandparents! grandparent = 1st cousins, great-grandparent = 2nd cousins, and so on and so forth.

Hickory Dickory Dock. The mouse ran up the clock. The clock struck one and the mouse jumped, rambling about lunch and sandwiches and my she really wanted  a sandwich but not with tomatoes because tomatoes are icky. Jack and Jill ran up the hill to fetch a pail of water. When the pair arrived they met a child, soaking wet from the buckets of well water she’d tossed about and in deep conversation with the well and an invisible rabbit named Darla. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall and a child came with him, giggling as she leaped from the brick wall. She frowned at the scrapes on her knee, but she smiled at the ripped stockings, fro the best stockings were the ones that you could fix by yourself because she had lots of string to sew with and her favorite was the yellow one but it was really short and it might not seal the hole, what do you think Abel? Abel, the imaginary little boy with a love of the sun and the girl, shrugged. The child shrugged back, and skipped away, an army of imaginary people beside her, a song sprouting from her lips and drifting into the air in a clear, childish voice.

The clock struck two, a song starts anew, Hickory Dickory Dock.

The locks on her bedroom door, they said, were for her own protection. The chain fastened at night, they said, would keep her safe. Bette learned early that this was only true when she and their so-called security were on the same side. They never were. She threw a headless doll at the door. Mother said the girl would grow up a strong woman. Father said the girl was not a girl at all. And she would not let them down.

Suppose it was fair to contain a child heralded by broken lamps, followed by torn curtains, and having no idea as to the whereabouts of her mother's diamond necklace. Suppose it was fair, when sometimes a flicker of guilt struck her and she snuck out to rectify her tantrum, but only made it worse with tape and glue and a niffler she'd caught during eighteen hours' disappearance in the woods. Suppose it was fair to contain a little goddess of ruin.

She had only wished to dance that day. As she had only wished to wear a velvet cape and to grow a tree of white stones the days before. They took away the niffler when they found it after the necklace again. His name was Long John Silver, and he kept all her secrets. Is this how the world treats us?

She couldn't be trusted with other little girls. Pulling hair and throwing mud on dresses. She'd give chase when they cried -- she hated it when they cried. She hated that they flinched when she reached to dry their cheeks with her mud-caked fingers. If she touched them, they cried louder. They called her a brute. A bully. A beast.

And she would not let them down.

Gaston simply reveres the strongest and the boldest. He wants to be the next head of the Märchen family, regardless of how far down in line he is, husband of Gabrielle, father to Bette.  Working as the head of gringotts security by trade, he has built his own fortune on the back of under handed deeds and 'looking the other way' situations whilst still affirming tyrannical approach to others less fortunate than the rich.  From his childhood Gaston was taught that  emotion denotes weaknesses -- thus he loathes weakness and the need to compete in every form of life was instilled on him. He looked down on those who he deemed lesser than himself, regardless of bloodline, and remains to this day as a keen advocator for the pureblood society

"I like you cause you're weird like me." Clumsily he walks, pushing up his glasses that are too big for his head. Weird was the word the people used. Weird was the one thing he had that made him happy. Loving anything he could without anyone bothering him about it. "

Your eyes burn and your fingers are cramping but you are still feeling, and you know that only the piano can talk for you. The music winds on and you look away from the mirrors and the decks of cards. You are imperfect, fragile, too sharp and too unfocused, too perceptive and too distant, too much of a contrast. Your thoughts are flying away again. But all dreamers must wake.

A swindler, a hustler, a good for nothing brat. Based on the thief of Lamps. None shall flee and fly as free as this boy. He knows your secrets, and hoards them like coins.

Knows the streets as if they were his hand.

None looks kindly on the imp of trickery. None favors the rat of the streets.

It's just simply easier to live as a neer-do-well than meet every individual's expectation. Living for yourself is the true form of living.

He stopped at every village, every hamlet, every house and hovel he passed along the way to ask if they had seen or heard anything of his sister,, Gretel. But no one had.

"You mean Gretel, the old woman?"

"No, my sister."

"Gretel, my sister's baby?"

"No, my sister. And she's not a baby."

"I have a goat named Gretel."

For a moment she stopped and considered following the rain's advice. But then she shook her head. "You're being foolish," Gretel told herself. "Rain can't talk."

No, of course it can't. The moon can eat children, and fingers can open doors, and people's heads can be put back on.
But rain? Talk? Don't be ridiculous.
Good thinking, Gretel dear. Good thinking.

They bid you not to stray from the path - but you did. They chided you never to share speech with strangers - but you did. Dauntless, willful child – maybe it’s you they should be afraid of. Someday, maybe, you may cast down a veil of superstition as you do these other things. But all dreamers must wake.

It’s hard to say if you sit uncomfortably in your skin, or if it sits just as unsuitably on you. Someday you may grow into it, yet for now you wage war upon yourself. The weapons which wound come disguised in eyes and mouths. And the shadow you stalk is the only one you find rest in. But all dreamers must wake.

From the water she came and to the water she will return.

In the beginning, water gave her life. She rose from the depths wailing and soaked to the bone, a siren torn from the waves and tossed to the beach. The sand stole the droplets from her skin and the sun left her parched and brittle. Every step away from the ocean feels like knives through her feet, but she continues to walk. Because she knows all things are ephemeral. In the beginning, water gave her life. In the end, water will inevitably take her life back.

Never stand with your back to the ocean. Waves are pitiless, and take indiscriminately: do not tempt them. Strong currents will rip your feet from the ground and carry you out to the sea while your screaming lungs fill with salt and water. They have no pity, no forgiveness, and certainly no regrets.

The waterline is narrow. Veer off-track and you are greeted by vicious waves that foam at the mouth or dry sand that burns the soles of your feet with bright red blisters. But in the middle, the ground is  soft and cool and nurturing. Crabs red as rubies scuttle among rainbow seashells as the last remnant of a wave laps at your toes. Balance is key to finding that narrow stretch of paradise. But safety is impermanent. Tides come and go, and one day the currents will catch up to you.

The bells ring around me, and I shall dance to their song.

She walks lightly, talks softly, and smiles freely. She runs quickly, screams harshly, and looks behind her. She rides her own emotional highs and lows, and loves every bit of the way. A free spirit in every sense of the word, Elsie laughs in the face of those who call her clever and mature. A professional face, nothing more. No, she is much more comfortable running through the grass and falling into the streams.

Elsie can typically be found writing songs while sitting in a tree, or humming a melody to the chords she played on the piano. Dancing in a field to some song that popped into her head, or on her way to her mundane job she keeps to pay the bills.

Her goal: Bring and spread the joy she thrives off of.

The bells ring around me, and I will play louder.

Intention is a weighty thing when it comes from your fingertips, extension of a nature chimerical.
