Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Ernestine Baumgartner

Birthday: December 19 1939

Hometown: Salcombe, England

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two):Preferably first (alt: second)

Biography:
Ernestine lives with and helps her parents William and Ida run a small bed-and-breakfast for wizards in Salcombe. She was born after the time warp to two muggleborns, who were surprised to find themselves dragged through time and stranded in the British countryside during a dinner party. A return to Salcombe was a small relief- their house was still there, and still theirs, though they did happen to gain a dingy grey stray cat.

Due to World War II, Ernestine only had a little bit of interaction with her father- he was a set of letters to her, because he had been conscripted and sent away to fight. Nosy US soldiers that were nearly quartered in their magical establishment almost had them break the Law of Secrecy, and the happy return of William- sans one arm- in May 1945 was soured by the Hexenreich’s annex of Wizarding Britain shortly after. So far, the little family had bore it all with a grin and grim determination. Ernestine, in particular, was simply glad the world seemed to be settling down for once so she could enjoy her new life with her papa, but the matter of sending her away to a Hexenreich Hogwarts loomed heavily on her parents.

They tried to downplay the effect the Hexenreich’s had on them to their daughter, but she could tell that her mother was afraid and her father had second thoughts about just sitting idly by as the Wizarding World took a change for the worse. Therefore, the steady build of enthusiasm she had for attending classes at the school her mother told her fantastic stories about began to erode away.

She often lay awake at night, torn between her want to meet more wizards her age, and the pure fear of being away from her parents in the hands of evil strangers. She wondered if she could decline the owl that would arrive on her eleventh birthday. She wondered what her father was up to- his presence was becoming scarcer, to point where there would be long weeks without him at all. She didn’t doubt his loyalty- he held her mother in his arm when she got overwhelmed or fearful, and always told Ernestine that everything would be okay. She made sure to smile whenever he did, and ignored the way her sleepless nights continued to make her feel exhausted.

Suddenly, there was no Hexenreich at Hogwarts. They didn’t absolutely disappear, but they were defeated; She saw the pictures of the more prominent arrests on the front pages of papers their wizard guests read at breakfast. Her father was strangely proud, though whatever hand he might’ve had he kept to himself. “Don’t worry about it, Sunshine,” was always the answer to any of her questions. Ernestine always supposed it was his way of saying I’m not going away any time soon. And that was absolutely fine with her.

When the owl came with the letter, her parents gave her one of the small dingy grey kittens that always occupied the house, and considered the trip to get school supplies in Diagon Alley a triumph. School for their little girl would finally be normal.

House Request: Hufflepuff

Personality: Artistic and little bit clumsy, Ernestine is a girl of few words, preferring to show her feelings through actions. Or her sketchbook, though those feelings are a bit more private. She loves helping out in the bed-and-breakfast, meeting new witches and wizards, and doting on her father, even when he doesn’t necessarily need the help. She has a bad habit of eavesdropping, which has led to her smiling a lot more, out of a need to see her parents happy. Or at least not worried about her. With no other siblings to keep her company and the Statute of Secrecy keeping her from relating more with muggle children beyond kicking balls, she’s not a particularly gregarious person- she’s learned how to entertain herself.

She can be more than just a little bit vindictive if you manage to get on her nerves, though that would either take a terrible deed or enough deliberate annoyances that she can’t stuff it down and pretend to be agreeable anymore.

Appearance:
Ernestine has a toffee complexion and freckles from days spent out in the sun in Salcombe. Her hair is dark brown and refuses to obey her- if it isn’t in a braid, it’s large and curly and coarse and sometimes grows in humidity. She’s glad for her mother’s magic to tame it every morning.

She also has a nose that she wishes was at least little smaller, but the last time she tried messing around with her mother’s charms and potions, she got a duck’s beak and a beaver’s tail and a terrible day that she’d really rather not remember. Ernestine still thinks her voice sounds quackish and annoying from that terrible venture, so she really tries to speak as little as is polite.

Roleplay sample #2

Where was the room for charms? Perhaps down the left corridor- or maybe down the right? Oh dear- Ernestine instead found herself in the sunlit greens of the gardens. Probably the furthest she could get from the classroom. She bit her lip in an attempt to stay calm. The last thing she wanted was to be tardy, but she could hardly remember which way to go.

A small figure emerged into the other end of the gardens. It was a boy! Oh good! she thought to herself. She could ask for directions- as she began to walk towards him, she could tell he seemed a good deal older than her. Which was a relief, because then there was more of a chance that he- say now, what was he doing to the flowers? The pretty red blooms were trampled underneath his feet as he sneezed his way through. Once she got close enough to see his misery, she had half a mind to sketch his odd position- wiping his nose on his sleeve in the midst of bent and broken stalks-

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Ernestine blinked at the fifth year’s sudden attention. She hadn’t meant to stare- but the way he had been tearing up the flowers in such a furious manner had made her pause. Someone surely had to have worked hard on those blooms, and he was ruining them without a second thought. What could he be looking for so desperately anyway?

But he was right- it wasn’t polite to stare. She reached into her satchel to grab a handkerchief- not the one with the lace, but the one with the embroidered cat- and strode forward to hand it to him.

“For your nose.” As she offered it up, she wondered if there was a spell to clean his robes of snot. “Are you looking for something?”
