Name: Kaguya Märchen

Birthday: August 15th, 1943

Hometown: Knockturn Alley

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):

Magical Weakness (pick one):

Year (pick two): 6th, 5th

Biography:

Kaguya’s legs were long and gangly, but most importantly, they itched to walk somewhere far away.

Somewhere familiar.

Somewhere she lived a lifetime ago.

***

It was the middle of Kaya’s fourth year, and something interesting had landed into her possession: a bright, informational flyer that she found haphazardly stuffed in her bookbag. Normally, all the flyers she’d ever come across at Hogwarts advertised weird student clubs or were missing pet posters, and she typically just folded them into paper airplanes and aimed them for the trash.

(Well, except the missing pet posters that showed particularly cute cats—Kaguya collected those like trophies. She had earned Galleons just through ransom money!)

This flyer was different though. STUDY IN EXOTIC DESTINATIONS! it yelled excitedly in bright, stylized letters. At first, it had been covered in illustrations of tropical jungles that swayed to invisible winds, but every so often the scenery shifted into glistening snow-capped mountains or to towering steel skyscrapers.

Kaguya’s favorite, however, had been the pictures of pink rustling trees littering cobblestone paths with their flowers and tall crimson gates leading to shrines whose gods she wasn’t privy to.

“Ma-hou-to-ko-ro,” she sounded out carefully. “Mahouko—no, Mahoutorok—pffpfpfpfft, MA-HOU-TO-KO-RO. Mahoutokoro.”

Her head turned slyly toward the stack of language learning books that she had originally bought in her third year after experiencing a burst of motivation to learn her native language. Basic English-Japanese Dictionary, Japanese 101, and Japanese for Beginners all under a thin layer of dust.

“Hm.”

***

In June of 1959, Kaguya returned from a year in Japan and back to her wonderful little flat in Knockturn Alley. Almost immediately, she holed herself up in her room as usual, refusing conversation with her father and sparing a few words for Yuusuke, who she had decided early on didn’t deserve her bratty, teenage attitude at the same magnitude as Inari.

She thought about her friends at Mahoutokoro, the little group that had accepted her within their ranks on the very first day classes began—Natsumi, Chiyoko, Kazuko, and Hoshi. She thought about her host family, the Uenos, and their seven-year-old son, Takashi, who was excited that he wasn’t the only one going to school for the first time.

She thought about the picture of her mom she saw in the trophy room at school.

A bored, curious Kaguya had asked Kazuko to read off the names of all the Quidditch teams throughout the years, and Kazuko, equally bored and curious, happily complied. They had just reached one of the 1937 teams when one list caught Kaguya’s interest.

“Sakamoto Akiko, Toda Kaori, Nakada Katsuo, Nakamura Atsushi, Fujimaki Azumi—”

Kaguya inhaled sharply. “Fujimaki Azumi?”

“Azumi’s a pretty name, isn’t it?”

“Wait, let me see...”

Her eyes followed where Kazuko’s pointer finger had stopped on the plaque—right on top of the name 藤巻 杏美. Just above, there was a photo of that particular team, all comically stone-faced until one girl burst into laughter and the rest followed suit. “Which one’s Fujimaki Azumi?” she asked.

“Second row, third from the left. She’s the one who laughs first.”

In a few hours, they had finished reading all of the names, leaving Kazuko’s voice hoarse and Kaguya all giggly at how ridiculous she sounded. But, just before curfew, Kaguya returned back to the trophy room. She studied her mother’s face for a long time.

In the only photo Kaguya ever had of her, Azumi had been laughing too.

***

Kaguya’s legs were long and gangly, but most importantly, they ached to search for an answer.

An answer that her father would never give.

An answer that she would have to figure out on her own.

… An answer that she would have to figure out later, because it
definitely wasn’t in England of all places!

Option I:

Kaguya Märchen had a horrible habit of lending out Transfiguration essays, and Clarissa Harlock had a horrible habit of never returning them.

If that plagiarizing witch didn’t want to have another meet-and-greet with Kaya’s fists, maybe she should have written five pages on Vanishment herself instead of having to pay three Galleons for Kaya’s generous services—this was her fourth time asking for help, and she still didn’t understand the rules? Tried to bend them in her favor, tried to buy a little more time?

“HARLOOOOOCCCCKKKKK!” Kaya yelled the very moment her feet reached the dungeon floors. No, Clarissa Harlock didn’t deserve even the most microscopic particle of her sympathy. In fact, Kaguya Märchen was dead set on chewing that girl out.

(Plus, the essay was due in two hours. That added an extra snap to her bite.)

Instead of the stalking predator she normally would have been, Kaya made noise. She yelled, she shrieked, and no, she did not care if she was interrupting anyone’s beauty sleep. Her grades were on the line, for Merlin’s sake, and it was all Harlock’s fault!

Though, judging by a flimsy little voice echoing feebly through the dungeons, it would all have to wait. Kaya rolled her eyes, quit her whining, and went on to locate the poor soul who sounded definitely unfamiliar with Slytherin territory. Confident in the shadows, the girl weaved between columns until she stumbled upon a poor first year—a bright little daisy in a field of deadly nightshade. Probably sent by a particularly nasty group of Gryffindor girls by the looks of it.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

“No,” Kaya butted in simply. “She doesn’t have any business in the living world. Run along now, kid. You’re wasting your time down here.”

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Kaguya Märchen

Birthday: August 15

Hometown: Knockturn Alley, London, England

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): 3rd, 2nd

Biography:

Kaguya was almost eleven when she realized that her legs were long and gangly. That they were tethered to Earth. And that there was no way she could ever float up into space and kiss a star. And that she couldn’t hug the Moon and tell her, “yes, goodnight, sleep tight, I love you, keep me here always.” And that maybe heaven wasn’t real and maybe all these years she’s just been some weird kid stumbling barefoot in the front of her father’s shady pawnshop, spouting nonsense about moonlight and a dead mother’s love.

She realized this one night, staring up at the midnight black sky, burning candles and praying. It came so suddenly. A pathetically unwanted epiphany she’s been trying so hard to ignore.

The next morning, Kaguya continued to cry until her tears had all dried out and all that was left were desert coughs and rough hiccups that could’ve tossed her heart out. She screamed into her mattress and kicked her feet at the floor. She couldn’t remember if Dad told her to shut up or didn’t say anything at all. She decided from then on that she hated a lot of things.

Dad and the Moon were two of them, and somehow she would cut them out and finally resemble an ordinary girl.

I’ll drown myself in friends. I’ll get a little pet. I’ll make a new nickname for myself. I'll buy a new diary. I'll burn my old one. I’ll never remember Japanese. I’ll laugh, and only loudly. I’ll throw out my candles, my incense, my letters to her.

I’ll never speak to him again.

7 July, 1956

Dear Diary,

Other than that Moment two years ago, I think I’m pretty alright now.

Kaya M.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Slytherin

Personality:
A little bitter toward the whole “dad” situation but otherwise! Eager to grow up and act mature and cool, tends to disregard others in favor for herself. Although good-natured and normally kind, Kaya’s world revolves around herself and her own fantasies, so she has a tendency to use others in order to reach her goals without truly realizing it.

Appearance:
Prey-like eyes, a predator’s smile, dark hair, and bangs. Just another thirteen year old girl!

Option I:

Maybe Clarissa Harlock should have returned that Transfiguration essay if she didn’t want Kaya stalking through the dungeons with two balled-up fists and half a mind to put them to good use. The other half was dedicated to literally ripping Harlock’s plagiarized paper apart—sure, Kaya had allowed it, but it was her essay in the first place. She got to decide what to do with it.

(Plus, it was due in two hours. That added an extra snap to her bite.)

So, like an animal, she lurked. Padded softly on top of floor. Slid silently around corners and shuffled cautiously across stone. She wondered what kind of expression Harlock would make if she snuck up behind the Slytherin and scared her to death. It would probably make her look a little beautiful.

Though, judging by the tinny little voice shivering like a traumatized mouse, it all would have to wait. Kaya paused and dashed behind another gray column, pressing her body against the cold surface.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

Delicious. Kaya grinned and skipped out from her hiding spot, bending down to match the height of poor Evangeline. A few strands of black hair hung in front of her face. "The one and only," she laughed—the sordid kind, the kind that she was afraid was becoming too natural and attempted to train out while making faces in the mirror.

"C’mon, let me possess you," and her fingers wriggled ominously in front of the other girl’s face, "I want to be alive again."

Biography: (100 words minimum.)
beginning

Her happiness grew like weeds—wild, everywhere, seeking for all that it needs in the driest of deserts and the foggiest of swamps. It sprouted in the cracks of a sidewalk, in the corners of a garden, in the crevices of your soul; it bloomed in the most questionable soils man had tilled for generations within the eons. Inborn, visceral, the moon’s happiness shined in silver lights across the mortal-driven sphere, and she glowed towards her people with such warm, lunate joy in both daytime hours and blessed night.

And on the day of her most heavenly bliss, she manifested into a princess belonging to the empyrean, singing a wondrous song of earth’s budding joy.

middle

The sky was a dark canvas, dotted with stars and planets from afar. The universe was large—too large, she lamented, as grass tickled her feet and reeds brushed against her small fingers. So large that the one she wanted most wouldn’t ever find her. Wasn’t that sad?

Her cheeks glistened as she stared higher into the heavens, embracing all that her widened eyes could comprehend in their youth, and she knew that the moon thought the same. It is very, very sad, the moon said, allowing the tiny girl’s emotion to foam at the tides.

A pearlescent orb hovered still on a navy spread freckled with white, hidden between the swaying oak boughs like a forgotten balloon. Slowly, she closed her eyes and absorbed all of the hope in the world.

In the midst of the night, an incense stick smoldered and burned, and the smell of paper set aflame filtered the air. A foxlike plush sat lazily upon a picnic blanket and a plush with bunny-like ears sat upon it. Intervals of silence persisted for seconds, minutes, hours; nature was the only thing she could hear. She liked nights like this one, because it was only herself and the moon and the expanses of heaven. For only such a young age, she had many things on her mind. It was very difficult, she commented.

Indeed, agreed the moon, caressing her cheek in the form of a breeze.

It was nearly a quarter after ten, and the girl’s mother tended to get worried at this hour—so she kissed the moon farewell and kissed her mother goodnight, falling asleep next to the window with the stars at her side.

end?

The moon did not come out this night, but she quite understood. The girl’s mother said that people took time. They needed rest and love and care, and she supposed that the moon was the same. ‘Unlike your father,’ the girl’s mother would spit. ‘He doesn’t need anything more than the gratification of his misdeeds.’

Big words. She didn’t listen.

She didn’t listen. A fox nuzzled at her ankles.

She didn’t listen. A rabbit found home in her arms.

Azumi, beloved daughter and mother, whose beauty shone brighter than the sun—

(And then the stars whispered secrets on her natal day and sent her to her grandparents, never guiding her the way back.)

She wondered what would have happened if she had listened closer to the moon, her mother, the truth. Death had never settled well in her stomach.

? ? ?

An incense stick smoldered and burned not more than three days later, and the smell of paper set aflame filtered the air. But what did she have to say in early forenoon? Baby pinks blended into warm yellows and oranges and pale blues like watercolors—a wholesome softness compared to the stark, dimly-lit darkness of her homeland.

“I see you,” she said, offended and betrayed. “And it’s not even night!”

I stayed awake longer than expected.

“You’ll send a message for me, okay? It’s for someone special.” Wavering, her fingers picked at the buds of Obaasan’s morning glories. “Mommy can’t watch over me for a bit. She won’t like where I’m going.”

Home?

“Mm, I guess?” If that was what her father's place could—and she dearly hoped would—become. Her heart never stilled afterwards.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
Suppose that the sun’s rays were beams of fluttering confetti that stuck to your hair and clothes and clung to your eyelashes and rainboots; like butterflies they danced on top of breezes and like birds they could see the expanses of the lovely Earth it shone upon. Oh, Kaguya only wished she could hug such warmth again. Mommy’s embraces were ever-so-heavenly.

As for Daddy’s, she still yearned to feel them. From their first meeting, Kaguya at least knew that his arms would be chilly. It was a good idea to ask him for a jacket their first day, wasn’t it?

There would be candy after this, she reminded herself firmly. A few more minutes and Daddy would come back with a piece of candy or maybe even an ice cream cone they could share if he forgot half of the promise.

“Seven, eight, nine…”

Eyes closed tight against the shining sky and glistening blades of grass, she counted until the footsteps of the other children were no longer heard. Her hands slowly uncovered her eyes, and she turned and faced someone who definitely wasn’t part of the game.

"You!"

“...Me?!” Kaguya pointed to herself, staring at the newcomer with wide eyes.

"...Do you want to play?"

There was a tuft of light brown hair poking out of a bush in the distance—it wasn’t hard to spot. Her attention lingered on the blonde girl for a moment and stuck itself on the bush instead without a twinge of guilt. “Ummm… Can’t you see I’m in the middle of something? Go play with someone else.” She squinted.

Huh. That might have been a twig instead.

“I’ll get you ice cream if you go play with someone else, promise!” Her tone tried to switch to a happier one, but it was hard when you were concentrating on hide and seek. Some things just needed more attention than others. “My friend Jared Kerfuffle brung ice cream, so I’ll give you some after I'm done! Or you can go find him for yourself if you want!”

Wait, wait, wait. Backtrack real quick.

“IS THAT A BROOM? DO YOU FLY IT GOOD?”
