To her, it was okay that some people lived their entire lives inside of their heads. When she turned the pages of her grandfather's books, she could feel their crisp dryness between her fingers. She was used to doing her fair share of the work during day and her hands were marked. But at late nights she preferred to be up here in the old attic, dry fingers upon dryer paper, ashes in her face but carefully cleaned away from her hands so they would leave no stains. Until just a few years ago she had done it too, lived in the fairytales of her own making, until the fairytales had taken over completely.

It was because they were muggleborns, said granddad.

Muggleborns were doomed to be forever alone, that was his slightly appalling prospect of the situation. Yet - thought she - they had each other, and she had school, so they weren't really all that alone after all.

She just held no memories of her parents, and neither did he. Some would have twisted and altered their worlds to try to understand why, but she knew there was nothing she could do about it. Sometimes things just happened and sometimes they didn't. And they, the people, were tossed around in an existence so overwhelmingly great that it was quite impossible to comprehend. They could work against it, or they could work with it. Ian knew which one she preferred.

There had to be some sort of meaning behind it all. To why it was the two of them.

Perhaps she was a dreamer, but she was a logical one. First of all she'd have to take care of what she could. Then came everything else. That everything else had involved her learning that she was magical. It had also involved that moment in time that she'd lost everyone and been put in an orphanage until granddad came to claim her.

Ian had done fairly well though. She was an independent girl, someone who knew her way around. She could cook and she could clean, but she could also manage the chickens, the dog, and the horses. And she could repair old furniture and work in the smithy. Ianthe wasn't that fond of limitation. She was even less fond of those who told her that limitations existed - that there were things she could not do.

She turned another page, so fragile against her skin, and scrutinised the black ink writing - it had slipped somewhat. Someone had, at some point, not been entirely steady. It left an almost artsy finish to a book that held no pictures, only letters. It was how she preferred it - she made up her own pictures on the inside of her head. They were all the sum of the facts that she gathered from the outside world. It was the only way her imagination could truly work. And because it was entirely dependent on her own experience, she knew that every single human being had to imagine something different - there were as many fantasy worlds as there were people in the world.

For some reason that fascinated her.

Personality: Quiet, yet quite outspoken when she feels like it. In many ways she's quite a tomboy, unafraid of getting work done or dirtying her hands.

Appearance: Dark brown hair, blue eyes, normally sized for a 13-year-old. Strong arms and hands from farm work.

? SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
Please reply to one of the Sample Roleplays (option 2) below.

She'd just exited the toilet, entering a delightfully empty corridor, when someone came at her like a train in the silent night. Having been in an amazingly peaceful state of mind, Ian was completely unprepared for the sudden confrontation, stopping in her track as the other girl's voice rung out, and staring at the approaching figure, quite perplexed.

Frog legs?

Her mounth opened as to say something, then closed again, words lost in their making. Then, for a moment, she let the silence hover between the two of them, as her mind made an attempt to process what exactly was going on.

Quill, notebook, questions - okay, reporter, Spellbound, she had to place these things in order for them to make sense.

Frog legs.

She gave the reporter a dumb look.

"Do you intend on breeding these frogs under your bed or are you completely unaware of the fact that we're at war and we have rations to deal with. Are frog legs part of Hogwarts' student rations?"

This idea wasn't sticking together at all. Maybe the reporter should consider putting her project on ice for now and dwell on something slightly more realistic. Ian didn't have the time for silly talk - she had a whole library to explore.
