Wow. I apologize. I'd changed her brothers names, and apparently my brain wasn't working, and I overlooked that line. Yes, Ramsay and Fionnlagh should be Wesley and Tobias. Sorry for the confusion!

Born in Airdrie, Scotland on the outskirts of Glasgow, Emery Greer Coburn is the only child of Malcolm and Kit Coburn. Though she was their only child, she did have three elder brothers, the youngest of which being nine years older than Emery. Wesley, Hamish, and Tobias Coburn were certainly forces to be reckoned with, all three having left Hogwarts to chart their own paths in the world. Ramsay and Fionnlagh were currently employed in the Ministry, while Hamish had found his calling at St. Mungo’s. The boys had all been young when their mother had disappeared from their lives, and to this day, they would always say that they couldn’t remember anything about her. Even Emery’s father could not recall much, if anything, about the woman - only that she had disappeared and left him to raise his three boys alone.

While she was the youngest and only daughter, that, by no means, meant that Malcolm Coburn spoiled her. No, she still had to do her chores and clean up after the family’s cats, owls, and her own puffskein, Theodore. She enjoyed dressing up in pretty dresses to go out to tea with her mum, and yet, she couldn’t help but to run around after her brothers whenever they had come home for the school holidays. The boys made sure to teach her how to fly a broom and learn the rules of Quidditch, as any respectable witch or wizard should excel at the sport, in their opinion, at least. Emery had, indeed, taking a liking to the sport, with the Montrose Magpies being her favorite team. On occasion, her father would even take her to go see one of their matches!

Up until the point where she received her letter to go to Hogwarts, Emery had been worried that she wouldn’t be “magic” enough to attend the wizarding school. Unlike her Pureblood brothers, Emery’s mum was a Muggle. The woman had done a good job of adapting to the magical world, but there had always been that slight fear in the back of Emery’s mind that her mother’s genetics would overpower her father’s. The Coburns lived mostly in the wizarding world, but on occasion, Kit would take them into Muggle London for a little excursion and lesson on non-magical people.

When Emery’s Hogwarts letter did arrive, a wave of relief washed over her. She was officially a witch! Or, rather, a witch-in-training!

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

The cold, damp air of the Dungeons penetrated Emery’s robes as she slowly walked along the corridor.  She hadn’t run off to her dormitory with the rest of her year mates after their Potions class, instead taking the time to explore the halls beneath the castle. Although, it had not taken her long to think that maybe she should have followed her friends. The Dungeons were quite creepy when lacking the usual noises that accompanied large groups of adolescents. The faint echo of her own solitary footsteps was enough to send a shiver down Emery’s spine.

But every time she thought of returning to her common room, she thought of her brothers and how they would tease her for being a baby and getting scared of nothing. But that nothingness that existed in the Dungeons took up more space than her own scrawny frame. Not paying attention to where she was going, Emery stubbed her toe on a stone in the floor, causing her to drop her bag to the floor.

“Ugh.” She bent down to pick up her bag, and it was at that moment that she heard something, a whisper of sound from further down the corridor. Emery strained her ears to hear it again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?”

The voice was louder this time. Emma Birch? Had whoever it was gotten Emery’s name mixed up? But why would anyone be looking for her in the Dungeons in the first place? It took Emery another few seconds to realize where she recognized the name. She had heard some older students talking about some ghost named Emma Birch who haunted the Dungeons. Emery had completely forgotten about that, which only made her spine tingle even more.

She was finally getting to know some of the ghosts around the castle, but she had yet to meet this particular one. Eyes brightening as an idea formulated in her mind, Emery flattened herself along one of the walls and cupped her hands over her mouth.

“OooooOOOoooo. OooooOOOOOOOoooo,” she wailed in her best ghost impression she could manage. “Who dares speak my name and wake me from my slumber?” Emery had to cover her mouth to suppress her giggles as she waited for the student’s response. Her brothers would be proud.
