Biography:
It was a cold February day-the 23rd, in 1939, to be exact. A small town located in upstate New York was quiet, families hidden away in their individual houses from the wild blizzard raging outside. Blizzards were typical, and things were uneventful, apart from one event that changed three lives forever. The long-awaited son of John and Louise Hoying had arrived at long last. The boy entered the world utterly silent, barely a tear on his small cheeks, as he observed the world with wide hazel eyes. The new parents looked upon their new son with love and wonder. He was christened Adam John Hoying, and from day one, the witch and wizard couple knew their son was special.

The couple themselves were quite reserved, and so Adam naturally grew up a quiet child. The child was curious about the world around him, but in the town in New York, there wasn’t much to see. It was a No-Maj town, hidden away from the world of magic John and Louise had grown up in. It was a cruel world, the parents firmly believed, and Adam should grow up away from all that. Magic was what he learned of rather than mundane non-magical things, pots stirring by themselves was the type of cooking he became accustomed to rather than the manual.

Adam showed signs of magic early, just days after turning five, and that day when Hogwarts was explained to the young pureblood it became his lifelong ambition. Sure, Illvermorny was closer, but Hogwarts was where his parents had gone and that was the place of which they had stories to tell. He was utterly fascinated with their stories of a school of magic, and he wanted nothing more than to go. His parents, however, suspected that he might not get the letter which he so coveted since he would most likely be expected to attend the American school of magic.

Adam Hoying lived a sheltered life, in the tiny cottage he had lived in since he was born, with his two constantly doting parents. They were rarely away from him, both having decided to take their jobs at the American Ministry at a quieter pace since their son was born. The little family had lived together in the cottage in the small town in New York for nine years now. Springs and summers and falls and winters went by, and time passed, the boy growing older as it did.

Adam didn’t know much of how other children behaved. He’d had maybe one friend, around the age of seven maybe, but No-Majs were just...they didn’t understand. There had been incidents, as his mother referred to them, and since the largest one had happened...well, Adam hadn’t associated with the friend after that. He was too shy anyways, he told himself. Besides, his parents understood. Nine years together, and the little family was complete, and none wanted anything else besides the life they had created for themselves.

It happened in a day. As soon as the blonde-haired, hazel-eyed boy woke up that fateful morning, he knew something was wrong. Scouring the house proved that his parents were gone. Nothing was left behind. The pureblood boy had no idea what had happened. All he could comprehend was that his parents had disappeared.

Two hours after the letter had been hurriedly scribbled out in nine-year-old handwriting and sent off with the family owl, a young woman arrived on the doorstep of the cottage. Martina Wells, a wild twenty-six year old world traveler, free spirit that refused to settle down. The young pureblood boy greeted her with a smile, a bear hug, and utter relief. Much-beloved Aunt Martina, his mother’s sister and one of his only other relatives, was here at last. Maybe everything could finally be okay now. But his mother and father weren’t waiting behind the corner to surprise him and claim it had all been a joke like he so hoped they would be.

Four hours, the most absolutely agonizing four hours of Adam John Hoying’s young life, passed. Neither of the two knew what was going on. There was another knock at the door at long last, but it wasn’t the knock both were hoping for. An unfamiliar man stood there, who held up an issue of a famous American wizarding newspaper John had been fond of, obnoxiously blaring the names of Adam’s parents in multiple headlines and explained that Louise and John Hoying were dead. How was either unknown or classified. It wasn’t said before the man drove away, taking the entirety of Adam’s hopes, dreams, and his heart with him.

A week later, Martina had made the choice she’d never expected to make, whisking Adam away from the only home he’d ever known to a townhouse in the Wales countryside. Everything was foreign, unfamiliar, terribly not-right. Adam loved his aunt, but his life had been shattered into millions of pieces he wasn’t sure he would ever be able to put back together again. He was an orphan. Nothing would ever be the same.

The young Hoying boy began to have horrible nightmares at night, and his parents’ death was suddenly all the more real, his dreams immersing him into all the possible ways they could have died. When it came bedtime he climbed out of bed and found other things to occupy his time while Martina slept. Adam avoided sleeping at night for hours, sometimes even all night.

Anything was better than the nightmares.

He couldn’t escape them, they were always there. Happiness, and sleep, occasionally came on trips with his aunt, but neither ever lasted. The realization came to him, slowly at first, then all at once. He was an insomniac.

He missed them. He needed them. Why weren’t they here, in the long, long hours of the endless nights, stretching before him in a never-ending cycle?

Days and nights went by, and so did moments of the boy’s life. Still living in a Muggle (they called them Muggles in the U.K., it was rather odd) town, he attempted to make friends, but he found it just too difficult. He was shy, he was nervous, he was socially awkward, he was everything no one ever wanted to be. He hated public school, he hated every aspect of his new life apart from Aunt Martina and their occasional holidays together. Truly, all the aunt and nephew had were each other.

Martina decided to keep him home, homeschooling him in the ways of magic. Slowly the pureblood boy found a distraction from his emotional torment by way of the magic running through his veins. Hogwarts was a much more realistic goal, now, and it was only a couple of years away. He was beginning to become a bit excited by this new distraction as Martina taught him all she could.  Not as excited as before, never as happy or optimistic or anything as good as before, but still. Hogwarts was something clear in his mind beyond all the murky emotions. A possible escape.

Finally February 23rd rolled around again, the eleventh time he had lived through the day. It was over breakfast that the owl arrived, bringing with it the scroll, reading the words the young boy had imagined so long ago. Dear Mr. Hoying, We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry…

Time to wait, still, so he learned. He learned as much as he could, about charms and odd little creatures called kappas and boggarts. He had never seen a real boggart, but he was sure his would be Aunt Martina dead. After everything, he didn’t think he could take it.

Finally September arrived, and the young boy boarded the train, far older than his eleven years, and rode the Hogwarts Express into a new life.

Adam Hoying grew and matured and learned during his first and second year. Life was different, new, exciting, perhaps, though he was still far too socially awkward to have many friends. He was afraid of a lot, fear of whatever way his parents had died haunting him. Sleep was rare and evading, and most nights were spent roaming the castle, which was admittedly a much better place to explore when you could not sleep. Caught multiple times, that didn’t stop him, what else could he do? He couldn’t have another dream. He just couldn’t. He couldn’t stand it anymore.

Time passed, and eventually Adam learned more about his parents-still not how they died, but more about their work in the Ministry before he was born, especially his father’s. He came to the realization that he did not deserve the name, he did not deserve for his middle name to be John like his father’s. He was so much better, so much braver, so much stronger, Adam could never be as good as him-

He shouldn’t have died, the boy realized. He had to carry on their legacy. He had to exist for his parents while they could not. He must really be his father’s son.

It will take everything he has.

Third year is approaching fast, and Adam Hoying has decided that this is the first step to becoming more like his father, more like the man he could never be. He would live life more like John had. Maybe even try to make some friends. He wanted them, friends, more than anything. It was just so difficult. But he would really try to make friends, he would, and maybe he’d even really make some, and he would make his parents proud. Yes, he was determined to do all of these seemingly impossible things…

And attempt to evade yet another bad dream.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Ravenclaw

Personality:
Adam is possibly one of the shyest people one could ever meet. Preferring to be alone, he’s often nervous about various things. He’s quite awkward, never seeming to say the right thing. The library is one of his favorite places, being a smart and studious boy, but on the most part he’s usually too shy to raise his hand and answer questions in class. It is very difficult for him to make close friends, having a particularly low amount of self-confidence. However, if one works hard enough to get to know him, he’s very sweet and kind. He’s very emotional but often attempts to keep these inside. Adam has recurring bad dreams about his parents’ death and is an insomniac as well as being an orphan.

Appearance:
Adam has golden-blonde, wavy, short hair and hazel eyes. He’s actually fairly good-looking, but he does not believe this about himself. Not very muscular, he has a skinny, small build.

Option I:

Quote
The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Option 1 Response:

He’d tried tonight. Really, he had. Adam had tried for so long that he figured if exhaustion didn’t do him in first, boredom would. How long could one lay in bed staring at the ceiling before sleep would either come or the person in question would have enough?

Hours and hours, it seemed. But Adam was never quite sure of the time. It was one of those nights, one of those nights where every surrounding noise seemed like the stuff of nightmares. One of those nights where he swore if he slept, he’d disappear just like his parents did. It was irrational and illogical to believe that, however his parents died, he would be next. Adam knew this. He’d studied and he’d learned and he’d worked and he knew this. It was the only way he could explain it. Could insomnia ever really be explained?

Another thing to study.

So he wandered the corridors again. The boy was never sure where he was going during these times, just that he needed to get away. Escape the terror that continued to come years after it should have ended.

And now, to his extreme dismay, Adam Hoying had somehow managed to end up in the dungeons. Why the hell was he in the dungeons? Obviously he’d been aware of coming here...But now, as he stopped and really observed his surroundings for the first time in thirty minutes, he berated his subconscious for allowing him to walk the path to this godforsaken place for so long while barely being aware of it.

Sure, he took Potions. Didn’t mean he had to like where it was located.

He stood silently in one place, cringing from the dampness and the terrible smell and hating himself immensely for being like this and coming all the way down here just because he was so afraid of the night that he couldn’t sleep. Normal terrors would be able to access him more easily out here in the open. But Adam’s terrors lived only in his dreams. Nightmares, to be exact.

”Hello! Is Emma Birch here?”

He must’ve jumped three feet high.

The thirteen-year-old had seemingly been so wrapped up in his own thoughts that he hadn’t noticed the footsteps joining his own. Slowly creeping down the hallway, a golden-blonde head poked around the corner to find not a boggart, not a ghost, not some other horrible thing, but nothing more than a mere young girl. A sigh of relief and the boy walked from around the corner to fully reveal himself to the tiny first year.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know of any Emma Birch, so I must admit I’ll be no help there.” Him being in the dungeons was one thing, but what in the world was this small child doing? “W-what are you doing here?” Adam couldn’t keep the slight nervous stutter out of his voice even when he was talking to the (most likely) least-threatening person he could possibly find in the dungeons at this time of night. He was such a wreck.
