Biography:

Note: Some of the events below are described as taking place during the 1920s and 1930s, prior to the Time Warp. In reality, they actually took place in the 1960s and 1970s, but the biography is based on the warped memories of the character and the character's relatives.

Noah comes from a prominent Jewish American family with great influence in the New York wizarding community. His father, Jacob Goldberg, a self-made man in his own words, started out as an illegal drinking spot owner in the twenties that quickly expanded into a chain of popular jazz night clubs. After Prohibition, they became more and more frequented by celebrities and members of the wizarding political class. Reluctant at first, Jacob was finally seduced by his newfound connections into going into politics and leaving his brothers to run the nightclubs. This came as a pleasant surprise to the Goldbergs, an old family of aurors, whose reputation and legacy Jacob had been trying to run away from all his life. Nevertheless, the political scene of MACUSA turned out to be just right for him, as he quickly climbed up the career ladder, eventually becoming a Keeper of Treasure and Dragots.

Back when he was running the nightclubs, Jacob met one night in one of his joints his future wife Prunella Throttlebottom, a British journalist who, much like him with his bar business, had become a foreign correspondent for the Daily Prophet in the US mainly to escape from her elitist pureblood family. She later founded her own newspaper, Wizarding Times, which has come to be known as the most liberal wizarding press in the United States. Prunella converted to Judaism and married Jacob in 1928, much to the discontent of her conservative British family. A year later they had their first child, Rachel Goldberg, Noah's big sister who is currently travelling around Europe.

Noah came in 1932, the second of five children. Despite being exceptionally bright and showing an early talent for witchcraft, Noah grew up to be quite rebellious. Since his parents were both liberals, they encouraged their children to socialize with no-Mags, but they were forced to overthink their policy when it took a wrong turn for Noah. Growing up in Brooklyn, Noah would often get into trouble both with the no-Mag and the magical authorities for minor offenses such as pick-pocketing and car theft, which were nevertheless considered by MACUSA as endangering the secrecy of the wizarding community. After his frequent misdemeanors started threatening Jacob's career, the Goldbergs were forced to move to an all-magical neighborhood and Noah's social contacts were as of then limited to his Ilvermorny schoolmates. And of those, he had few. Noah was sorted in Horned Serpent, the house that was known to favor intellectuals and scholars. Despite being very intelligent and book-savvy, Noah found little in common with "this sad bunch of bookworms and goody-two-shoes", as he liked to refer to his schoolmates and would much rather prefer the company of the no-Mag street thugs.

Nevertheless, during his fourth and fifth year, he did find a few friends in the face of several no-Mag born kids, all brooding and rebel-minded like him. Thanks to them, he was introduced to no-Mag philosophical literature and was quickly seduced by socialist ideology. Or at least by its revolutionary spirit. Inspired  by what little they had read about the October Revolution and the Bolshevism, Noah and his friends founded a secret rebel society that quickly gained popularity within both pureblood and no-Mag born outcasts. Their goal was to overthrow the school administration, which they judged to be "bourgeois" and "oppressive", to remove the house system and to take the power in order to set up a more egalitarian one.

All of this, of course, was founded less on actual ideological beliefs and more on the pure desire to question authority and to bring about chaos and destruction, an ambition that had guided Noah's decisions all his life. The much awaited revolution finally took place on the symbolic date of 25 October 1948, in the beginning of Noah's sixth year in Ilvermorny. The insurgent group of teenage witches and wizards stormed into the Great Hall at night, some of them still dressed in their night gowns, and set fire to the portraits of the school founders. They then headed for the Professors' chambers, but before they could even get to the stairs, the Headmaster had been notified by the very portraits the kids had just tried to set on fire and their glorious rebellion was crushed in the matter of minutes.

In an urge of self-sacrificing heroism, Noah took sole responsibility for the incident. He was immediately expelled and sent home to his outraged parents. Not knowing what to do with him, his father sent him to work for his uncle in one of the gin joints as a sort of a last resort, hoping that a potential career in the nightlife would keep him away from the streets and out of trouble. The young apprentice showed quite a gift for running a nightclub, but unfortunately he started falling into his old ways again pretty quickly. After only a few months, Jacob received worrying news from his brother that Noah had taken up drinking and that he even suspected him of opium abuse. What's worse, apparently he had become acquainted with some shady wizards ("gangsters" was the exact word his uncle used). In addition to that, some of Jacob's colleagues that frequented the bar also warned him that they had seen his son multiple times in the company of "easy women".

For Prunella, who had up until now always been patient with her son's turbulent behavior, this was the last straw. For the first time in more than twenty years, she wrote to her estranged family back in Britain. Despite all the humiliation she had to endure, through many apologies, negotiations and pleadings, she finally got her older sister Margery to pull her connections in Hogwarts in order to get them to accept Noah for his final year of school. After another long and heavy series of negotiations, she managed to convince Margery to take Noah to live with her in London until the end of the summer, hoping that her sister's strict personality and the dullness of British suburban life would help keep her son in the right track.

House Request:

Noah seems best fitted for Slytherin, since throughout his long history of mischief, he has shown qualities such as cunning, resourcefulness and a very particular sense of ambition. He doesn't lack a desire for glory and always strives to excel at what he does, however inglorious that deed may be. On a different note, it would be interesting to see how Noah's anti-conformism and despise of elites clashes with Slytherin's prevailing traditionalist and pureblood supremacist setting.

Personality:

Noah's rebellious, addictive and coldblooded personality has gained him a permanent spot among the black sheep of the family. Once a bright, curious and energetic child, he has grown up to become a brooding, emotionally withdrawn teenager. Noah seems to have two radically opposed sides to his personality, and he chooses which one to show depending on the people he's with. One is that of a very cold, sardonic and emotionless person, one that prefers the company of books rather than that of people and deliberately expresses his lack of interest by acting smug, being rude or simply ignoring people. This is the version of himself he uses when communicating with strangers or people he doesn't like as a sort of a defense mechanism to hide his inner insecurity and fear of rejection. The second version is the one that is closer to his true self, a smart, passionate and brave individual, filled with boyish enthusiasm and ready to fight selflessly for the people and the causes he cares deeply about. Only a handful of people have gained Noah's trust enough for him to show them this more personal and more vulnerable side to him, among them being his older sister Rachel who hasn't been around for the last couple of years, his closest friends from school whom he lost touch with following his expulsion, and at times his mother, who is way too angry at him now for them to be able to bond.

One of Noah's biggest weaknesses is his proneness to addiction. He seems to be a magnet for trouble and gets consistently drawn to all sorts of vices: chain-smoking, drinking, mild drug abuse, theft, gambling...His aptitude for danger seems to be stronger than his cold rationality.

Noah's emotional unavailability takes a peak in his romantic life. So far, he has never had neither desire nor opportunity to form any actual relationships. He distrusts women, mainly because he doesn't understand them, and has settled for the much less demanding nature of "paid love". However, ha hasn't been oblivious to the growing interest that girls have been showing towards him and though it flatters him, his vanity makes him dismiss his admirers as immature and unworthy of his attention.

Appearance:

Noah is very attractive and perfectly aware of it. He is of medium height and well-built. He has big curious eyes that constantly shift between sea green, watery blue and light brown, dark thick eyebrows that only highlight instead of taking the attention away from his eyes and messy copper brown hair that he constantly runs his fingers through when he's nervous. He has no defined sense of fashion, his style can range anywhere from shabby washed-down no-Mag clothes during his socialist phase to a clean-cut tuxedo and slicked back hair when he was running his uncle's nightclub.

Option 1

Ah. The dungeons. What a heavenly bliss, to be able to walk around the empty halls while everyone else was either in class or out enjoying the sunny day. Noah didn't care much for sun. Or for going to class, for that matter. He was skipping Divination for the second time in a row, but he just couldn't be bothered with such preposterous nonsense. As far as he was concerned, Divination wasn't even real magic and the only reason they were still teaching it in school was because no one in the Hogwarts administration was willing to go through all the bureaucracy in order to remove it. It just wasn't worth it for such a stupid and useless subject. Besides, nothing ever changed in this stupid old elitist school for brainwashed bourgeois kids and pureblood supremacists, anyway.

On that note, nothing ever changed in the dungeons either. But this was a different kind of stillness, one that felt warm and welcoming, as opposed to Hogwarts' overall hostile environment. Noah liked the familiar smell of mold and the even rhythm of water dripping from the ceiling. He liked listening to the echo of his own footsteps, which created the illusion that he was surrounded by other people, while in reality he was perfectly safe in the company of his own thoughts.

Suddenly, a thin brittle voice disrupted the comfort of his solitude.

"H-h-hello?"

It was certainly coming from up close, even though Noah couldn't see anyone in front of him. Then again, there was barely any light in the dungeons at all, so technically, even if there was someone standing two feet away, Noah wouldn't be able to make out more than a silhouette.

"Darkness is an unreliable friend", he thought to himself bitterly. "It gives you the comfort of its embrace, but it also strips you down of your protection." Noah made a note to himself to later write this down in his journal, where he collected his own philosophical thoughts.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?", the voice came again. This time it was louder and Noah was able to trace it down to the corridor on his left, right around the corner.

With a few quick, decisive steps, he was now standing right in the middle of where the paths of the two corridors would meet. He then turned to the left and squinted his eyes to try and see to whom the squeaky voice belonged to, but it was too dark.

"Lumos", he mouthed, while pointing his wand in the direction of the voice. The flickering light revealed to him the silhouette of what seemed to be a little girl. He squinted his eyes a little more and was able to make out a set of golden locks around a very frightened-looking face and a striped tie in the Gryffindor colors.

"Oh, not you again", Noah sighed with disappointment. He didn't think he knew the girl, but he definitely knew what this was going to be about. "When are you kids going to get your heads out of your butts and realize there is no Emma Birch or any other evil ghost haunting these poor old dungeons".

Noah wasn't entirely sure about his latter statement. For all he knew from his frequent lone walks around the dungeon halls, there had been quite more golden-haired scared little Gryffindor girls than there had been ghosts, especially not ones named Emma Birch, but after all, he had only been here for a few months.

"I'll tell you what, kid", he continued, taking a step closer to the little girl, "There's only one specter haunting this lame-ass continent. And that, my friend, is the specter of communism."

Noah couldn't help but smirk while he was pronouncing these last couple of words. He was so proud of the way he had managed to sneak his reference into the conversation, he seemed to completely ignore the fact that he was reciting Communist propaganda to an eleven-year-old. Not to mention that he no longer even considered himself a communist.
