Tess was born from a whirlwind romance. Barely 20 years old, Ethan was starting to make a decent living as a wizard artist when he came to Cornwall to make a collection of paintings. He spotted a beautiful Muggle tour guide and just couldn’t resist asking to paint a portrait of her. After several days at the beach together, they were a couple. They just had so much in common-adventurous, wanting to travel the world, history buffs, charming, outgoing, funny…. Rachel quickly found out he was a wizard, which meant, she thought, no financial or household problems. In a matter of months they were married and soon after pregnant. The bliss was short-lived, with a baby coming the realization of how big a commitment marriage was finally dawning on them. After many screams and tears, they parted their ways, Ethan back to London and Rachel to a small town on the French Riviera. It was more than she could afford, but she needed it to regain her spirit. When Tess was born, Rachel swore to give up her flighty ways and settle down for her sake. They went back to Cornwall and Rachel became a nanny. Tess herself was a happy kid, well cared for by her loving mother. Her mother kept any mention of magic away from her as long as possible, wanting her to be a normal kid for her sake. When she asked about her father, she either got a vague answer or the topic was changed. Otherwise, her life was perfect, even if they weren’t very rich. Her days were spent playing with her mother and the kids she took care of. They often went down to the beach playing in the waves, and Tess had a tendency for going out too far. When she started school, signs of magic started showing. She was able to make other kids fall without even touching them, somehow cut in line even though she swore she didn’t do anything. Her reputation as the cute, innocent little girl started to deter. Her mother, unsure how to deal with it, wrote frantically to Ethan. Ethan replied soothingly, saying it was normal in young witches, and invited them to his place for New Year’s Eve. It was an awkward reunion, Tess stared unbelievingly for a while when her mother introduced her father, but she quickly grew comfortable amidst all the funny moving paintings. By midnight they had all warmed up to each other somewhat, and they were acting almost like a family. Tess still remembers the next scene very clearly, her mother was smiling, saying “Happy New-“ and then quiet suddenly she was not there anymore. The weeks to follow were the worst of her life, she cried and cried for her mother but she was nowhere to be seen. Now she was all alone with a man she barely knew, away from everything she knew in life. From then on, she was raised by her father, who she never quite trusted. It was a nightmare for Ethan too, he had no idea what happened and was stuck with an inconsolable daughter. He felt it was the universe’s way of punishing him for never being in her life before. As Tess grew older and started to forget her mother, she hung around some not-the-best influences. She found herself lurking into shops filled with dark objects and hanging out with older purebloods. The wizarding world never ceases to amaze her.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality: Tess is incredibly fun loving and adventurous. She has a very talkative and outgoing nature and as a result is often the life of the party. She doesn’t mind being the center of attention and relishes in it, she can be a bit of a drama queen. She loves nothing more than cheering up others with a good laugh. Once you get her talking it’s hard to shut her up. She generally puts her own needs before others and can be quite selfish, but she stubbornly refuses to believe anything but the best in her friends. She loves to try new things but has trouble letting go of the old, being quite sentimental. She trusts her gut rather than logic and facts. She is creative but quite scatterbrained and doesn’t see the big picture. She usually doesn’t think things through all the way and has a lot of “oh yeah….” moments. Her lack of intelligence, patience, and precision means she’s usually bad at school. She is friendly and wants people to like her, but overall she treats people the way they treat her. She’s quite rebellious and won’t hesitate to ignore authority in favor of what she thinks is right-or in the pursuit of adventure. Although generally easygoing, she is easily provoked and uses physical force even if it doesn’t do her any good. Impatient and straightforward, she especially hates flowery words and false modesty. She is very empathetic even though she often doesn’t know how to help. If nothing else, she’s quick to give a hug or comforting words.

Appearance: Tess’s own long dark brown hair and brown eyes are pretty boring, so she makes up for it with her clothes. She has a vibrant, colorful, flamboyant style. She tries to dress cool, mature, and unique.

Option I:

Tess was heading back to the Great Hall from her dormitory, arms full of pumpkin juice bottles. Her friends had complained about being thirsty and she'd had a sudden bright idea. Recently, she'd bought exploding pumpkin juice from an older fifth year. Now was the perfect time to use them. She grinned as she imagined her friends' faces when the seemingly normal juice exploded in their mouths. Suddenly a loud voice shouted at her.
"WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"
She jumped, dropping a pumpkin juice bottle. She rounded on the boy, narrowing her eyes. "If you're going to have a pity party, don't drag other people into it," she sighed impatiently. As she looked at his tearful face, though, she couldn't help feeling sorry for him. "Look, you're only a second year, right? You have five more years, it would've been a lot worse if you were a seventh year," Tess said in a much kinder tone, picking up the fallen bottle. "My dad was a Seeker, the other Seeker snatched the Snitch from right under his nose, he lost the cup for that. So yes, I have seen a loser before, and anyway I don't have a camera with me. If this sort of thing were to happen, everyone would expect it from you since you're the youngest. I know that sounds like a bad thing, but it's not. Setting people's expectations low, right? No pressure. Trust me, I do it all the time," she grinned. "And anyway, moping doesn't make you better, so cheer up. Want some pumpkin juice?" she offered mischievously.
